The most over-rated band in the Brutish musical press Not bad musicians (Robertson, Lynott, Moore and Gorham are all apt, but Downey is rather sub-par IMHO) , but there stule of journeyman of rock'n roll is completely uninventive, but the rebellious touch should've made them almost punk. All about live (they were good on stage, mostly because of Lynott) reputation and a few correct tracks (the trouble was that they tried to hard to sell and it affected their songwriting to appear more commercial than they should've been), but album-wise , there is not one single to stand above the average of average. ------------- let's just stay above the moral melee prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

Thin Lizzy were a great band in the 70s and early 80s but their studio albums were very uneven.I always stated that their best album would always be a "Best Of" and that they were best seen live.Live And Dangerous fits that bill on both counts and delivers great hard rock in spades. One of the greatest live albums of all time and all self-respecting rock fans should own a copy.
Of the albums above I would vote for Black Rose just ahead of Jailbreak. The title track is my favourite Lizzy track ahead of Emerald,Still In Love With You and the ubiquitous Boys Are Back In Town. Regular guitarist in the 70s Brian Robertson was a talented young star,whilst Scott Gorham was more of a week link. Legend had it that his parts on Black Rose (the title track from the eponymous album) had to be played by Gary Moore who was with the band at that time (and indeed was an on-off member throughout their career) because the fast bits (Irish folk medleys played at incredible speed by Moore) were too difficult for him.Its a brilliant track and the likes of Petrucci and Malmsteen should take note that you can play a tune and play at breakneck speed if you are good enough! Moore was certainly that and is very under-rated on this site. |

Damn I forgot to put in Johnny the fox! Sean Trane, I have to disagree with you about Brian Downey being rather sub par. His drum solo on Live and Dangerous is amazing. Also listen to his drumming on Chinatown and Renegade. For me he is one of the greatest drummers alive. |

Black Rose for me. It was the first Lizzy album I heard and is, for me,
their most complete studio album containing some great stuff like the
singles Waiting for an Alibi, Sarah and the standout Black Rose: A Rock
Legend, with as Tony says some awesome guitar playing by Gary Moore.
I'd dispute the weak link theory though. His playing on the live
version of Still in Love With You is superb and helps make it possibly
the greatest Lizzy track of all. Plus I know his wife and she reckons
he's quite a nice bloke. That'll do for me.

Jailbreak is the only one I'm really familiar with. As others have said, "Live and Dangerous" is their best - I feel a lot of their studio stuff didn't really capture their power. They recorded some of the best harmony guitar work ever - just listen to "Southbound", "Still in love with you", "Boys are back" etc etc. Seems a shame that Scott Gorham's wife thinks he's only quite a nice bloke though. |

Of the studio albums, Jailbreak is my favourite, but as Tony, Chopper, Easy Livin and other rock fans of discerning taste know, Live and Dangerous is the only essential Lizzy album, and I have fond memories of seeing them live in the late 70s. ------------- 'Like so many of you I've got my doubts about how much to contribute to the already rich among us...' Me too. Actually they were the first band I ever saw, supporting Bachman Turner Overdrive at the Hammersmith Odeon. I was probably about 14 at the time and they were too loud for my young and sensitive ears, so I had to go and stand right at the back! |

Actually Chopper makes a valid point about the volume levels at Lizzy concerts. I remember catching them at Belle Vue,Manchester once and that was the loudest concert I ever attended.My ears rang for at least 3 days afterwards. This is from someone who stood on the front row at a Motorhead gig in Bolton where they had their concert PA in a room the size of a school hall! I may be getting old but I feel both Rush and Porcupine Tree were unecessarily loud on their last tours! |

| As allready mentioned Johnny the Fox is not here, that one is second. First is Black Rose, outstanding record. When my parents came back from England in 1979 they brought back Live and Dangerous. Still love them for that. One of my favorite rock bands. |

Tony, I agree about Rush. I was near the stage at the side at Wembley and it was deafening. Very distorted. The second night was better as I was further back. I'm not sure it's a getting old thing, I think Rush are just going through a mid life crisis and think it's big and clever to play on 11! I never saw Lizzy. Would have loved too. My cousin saw them in Dublin and also said they were louder than Motorhead! ------------- Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy! |

"Life" (1983) is another good live album even if not at the same level as "Live & Dangerous". Great band, sadly underrated!! |

| They never made a studio album that ever approached the brilliance of 'Live And Dangerous'; I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that's perhaps THE greatest live heavy rock/metal album ever recorded. However, they rarely did bad albums, if ever. I'd have to say 'Jailbreak' was the best. |
