Don't forget the "Robot Woman" trilogy of Mother Gong."Xitintoday" by Nik Turner's Sphynx also never appeared on CD (the album that appeared on CD under that name contains the same lyrics but completely different music) and is now a real rarity.

Thanks
Do you own yourself "Xitintoday" on vynil?

BTW, there are a few mistakes in the list up:

I.E Kraftwerk II exists on CD, but not Kraftwerk I
(which is a shame)

Recently BMG announced that they will make many out of print vinyls available as downloadable files - I know what you think about the technology, oliver, but I'm really looking forward to it, because that will be the only way for me to listen to some of these gems.

Hello Oliverstoned.

Fireballet-Night On Bald Mountain is released as a CD/Reviuvre is re-released as a 1999 concert, along with the original Intencion album (Pan Y Musica label)/Ezra Winston-Myth of .. is released on CD by an Italian label/Satin Whale-Desert Places is also re-released on CD, I don't know which label.

Placebo's on that list?

Is that some old band named Placebo (just like there's a 60's band called Nirvana) or are the guys from the group Placebo actually really old?

called Nirvana) or are the guys from the group Placebo actually really
old?

There are two placebos of course!!

Many albums of Guru Guru are only available on vinyl too (which means they are no longer available at all today, which is a pity; albums like "Dance of the Flames", "Mani in Germani" or "Jungle" deserve a lot more attention).

         several notes/comments:

Renaud had a second album, "Out of Time", also unavailable on CD.

I have Battiato's "Clic" on vinyl (British) & CD, and will check to see if track listing is the same.

I have Curved Air's "Air Cut" on CD, but it's obvious that some of the songs were lifted from vinyl or a really crappy tape (distortion), while others sound great. (Japanese cardboard mini-LP-style sleeve).  I've been told no better CD version exists.

Not quite prog, but I've been aftera CD version Moving Home by Rod Argent for years.

I got the chance to ask Rod about it a couple years back, when he and Colin Blunstone played a Zombies gig at Glasgow's Renfrew Ferry. He said that it was an album that he really enjoyed but that there were contractual problems with the label (MCA) that have prevented its re-release on CD.

One of these days......

         Followup on Battiato's "Clic"

The British Island label LP has 3 tracks on side one; all are on the CD, but in a different order.  There is one long track on side two which takes material from the earlier album "Sulle Corde di Aries"; I can't tell if everything on this side is found on the two CD's mentioned, but I'm pretty sure it is, and I'm certain that the shared tracks were not re-recorded (as in PFM's and Banco's English releases; songs like "Celebration", "World Became the World" and "Outside" were completely re-done, not just the vocals).

So, it appears that there is no material on the "Clic" LP that doesn't appear on some CD.

I have the early Kraftwerk albums via bootleg CD (CROWN RECORDS), but the text is odd on some sentences making look unprofessional, which is a shame, but the music seems unharmed!!

A great album I agree; I relistened to it before I reviewed it a few months back and it was superb stuff.

The good news is that this album is coming out on Repertoire in a digipak next month, remastered too I believe, doubtless to Repertoire's usual high standards.

Here goes...

Colosseum II- Electric Savage, War Dance; two excellent jazz rock albums, both unavailable, in the UK at least. Ironic that their weaker debut has been given a deluxe 2cd treatment.

Tommy Bolin- Teaser; another one I've never seen on CD. His next album 'Private Eyes' I have on CD, but this I have only on a slightly worn vinyl. It's a hugely diverse album and deserves reissue now.

Soft Machine- Bundles/Softs; these were on CD a long time back but have gone out of print. What I've heard I like a lot- shouldn't have been called Soft Machine as it's not really.Deserves reissue in any case.

Argent- All Together Now; their biggest album and the only one of their early albums OOP. Explain that!!

David Byron- Take No Prisoners; Heep singer's solo album. A more cohesive album than Heep's albums of the same era.

Tony Williams Lifetime- Emergency, Turn It Over; never seen these about. I think they are out as imports, but why not UK versions?

Dave Greenslade- Cactus Choir; need to dig out the vinyl again as this isn't on CD either.

Hawkwind- Chronicle Of The Black Sword; haven't seen this either. In fact, most of their output post Hall Of Mountain Grill is OOP apart from bootlegs.

By the way, impressive list, I know perhaps 25% of your list!

Yes, this list is not perfectly up-to-date.
Thanks for the precisions

Unbelievable. I was searching around for one of my rarities when i came across this discussion. I joined this board just to set the record straight. Oliverstoned took my list and made it his own. So here I am.

Anyway - here's the list. It's constantly updated... so there have been many changes since he cut and paste mine:

http://www.thomashayes.com/reissues - www.thomashayes.com/reissues  is the main page
http://thomashayes.com/reissues/never/ - http://thomashayes.com/reissues/never/   is the list of missing albums not on CD.

Now remember, VERY IMPORTANT, these are albums that don't exist on LEGIT CD. Many of them have been booted - which doesn't count.

Now to your post Erik, you mentioned Fireballet's debut is on CD? What label? Are you sure it's not a boot?

The Atila "Reviure" album still remains unissued. Just the 1999 concert, which is inferior IMO.

What label is the Ezra Winston - Myth on?

Satin Whale - Desert Places only exists as a boot on Germanofon.

- Tom

Righ, different band. It's a Belgium funk fusion group from the early 70's headed by Marc Moulin. Highly collectable. There does exist a legit compilation CD that you can get from Dusty Grooves.

The track that's missing on the UK Island version is called 'Revolution in the Air', which is a side long piece. I don't think it's anywhere else. It's definitely different than the Italian "Clic" material. But I need to A/B the "Sulle Corde di Aries"... maybe they just renamed it?

A few more spring to mind...

Magnum- Wings Of Heaven; I have it anyway, but I think this has drifted out of print. Their other Polydor albums I'm indifferent whether they are in print, really.

Soft Machine- Alive and Well Recorded In Paris; same as the other two Harvest albums. Not even seen these in bootleg versions.

Keef Hartley Band- Halfbreed/Battle of NW6; both are readily available as bootlegs, but these deserve remasters. Bizarrely, Eclectic started off doing their 3rd and 4th albums. Let's hope they do work their way back.

Jonesy- are any of their albums in print officially?

Czar- bootlegs again, always from vinyl

Fresh Maggots- actually I have their album, but it's been taken from a VERY scratchy vinyl. Sort it out, for goodness' sake!!

Strawbs- Strawbs/Dragonfly; these were strangely outside A & M's remasters. The second I'm not so fussed on but the debut I liked a lot.

Rare Bird- Rare Bird/As Your Mind Flies By; Virgin never bothered to put these on CD either, only the compilation 'Sympathy'. Only on bootlegs and you have to have their rather poor MOR Polydor album with the debut. Forget about the Polydor output.

This is the second time someone's posted about the Harvest era Soft Machine's. They're out legit on See For Miles, which doesn't exist anymore. Wayside had them all for the longest time - up until last year at least. That's where I bought mine.

The Jonesy's are all legit. You can find recent Japanese mini-Lps of them or even the older Si-Wan versions.

Yep - I had Czar already listed on the site. They are all boots.

Now the Fresh Maggots was just issued recently (Sunbeam is it?). Which version do you have? Mine is an older legit press on Si-Wan that sounds great.

I have the Rare Birds listed in the OOP page. Word on the street says they'll be coming out soon by a famous UK reissue company. From the masters - band permission - the whole bit...

Can't speak for the others.

Ah thanks for that Tom. I have the Sunbeam Fresh Maggots, yeah.

Some excellent news about Nik Turner's Sphinx, too, if you're still around, Jean and Friede. 'Xitintoday' seems to be getting a reissue from Eclectic Discs! Let's hope this is the 70s version as I've heard there was a re-recording. It has to be said, Eclectic are probably the best prog reissue label out there- you get great remastered albums, extra tracks, detailed sleevenotes, the lot. So I expect them to do a thorough job.

I agree, outstanding reissue label! I'd throw in a vote for Garden of Delights as well. Always thorough documentation and best source material. Long Hair, Transubstans and ProgQuebec deserve kudos too. Musea used to be one of the best, but they do fewer and fewer reissues each year. But their quality remains excellent - and they were the original gold standard in terms of quality product. There are others of course - in fact any label that takes the time to put out a legit reissue and pay the artists (or whoever owns the rights) earns my respect. It's a thankless task and no one gets rich that's for sure.

I haven't had problems picking up several of these albums on CD and from UK sources - and when not available from UK sources I go websearching. Check out the catalogues for Wounded Bird Records, Wild Places, Renaissance Records, One Way Records, See For Miles, BGO, Edsel, (as well as the aforementioned Repertoire).

Colosseum 2 albums out on Cd - issued by the original label MCA in the UK I believe but probably a decade ago.

Tommy Bolin: Teaser issued by Sony Mid Price in the UK in the mid 90's. I got Private Eyes as a cheap 2nd hand  import.

Tony Williams Lifetime all picked up either through Amazon.UK Marketplace or via arranging legit swops with friends in the USA - also a double CD compilation of Lifetime issued about 6 years ago. The two New Tony Williams Lifetime albums issued as twoferone by Columbia a good decade ago in the UK, the first album reissued on CD with two bonus tracks about 30 months ago (still available on Amazon.UK). And the missing link between the two Lifetimes' Wildlife appeared in a semi legit state less than 2 years ago (Williams, Bruce and Holdsworth in the line-up, and strictly a demo recorded 1975 in Sweden).

Halfbreed was released here on (unremastered) CD by Deram in the early mid 90's - but like a lot of back catalogue issues from Deram you had to be quick to get it, for instance the excellent original TYA Undead was in and out of "print"at the same time. However, a remastered version of that album with the full live Klooks Creek recording got issued about 3 years ago. Surely See For Miles Records have issued all the Harvest Records Machine recordings on CD except Triple Echo and Land Of Cockayne but as you indicate no longer available. However, the experience with some reissue labels, e.g. Blueprint/Voiceprint/Jazzprint, if the CD is unavailable the label may repress once the order book justifies - e.g. I waited 9 months to get hold of The 64 Spoons' essential  Landing On A Rat Column from Voiceprint
