Fortunately there are only 25 choices!!!

I have mentioned some of the most famous progressive rock bands from the Italian scene. Each of these groups relased at least one good album.

Which band among these do you like more?

I  Italian Prog!!!

I didn't get past choice nr. 1

Premiata for me.

LE ORME... Because they're not only reminiscences of the past and they're still able to release great prog albums like "Il fiume", "Elementi" and "Infinito"... And because of their outstanding live performances...

Anyway, I like almost all the other bands in this poll too...

one of the really interesting things about the Italian scene  is the preponderence of 1 and done groups.  Love have loved to have heard further albums by Maxophone, or Ill Balletto Di Bronzo for example.

As far as the poll... PFM but Le Orme is coming up fast......

Any TRIP fan here?

It's a very good band, similar to ELP. My favourite album is "Atlantide", but "Caronte" and "Time Of Change" are also fantastic.

Interesting enough, Ritchie Blackmore was in the first THE TRIP line-up (before band's debut album).

I'll give you some recommendations...

  • LE ORME - all their albums from "Collage" (1971) until "Florian" (1979) and IL FIUME (1996), ELEMENTI (2001), L' INFINITO (2004)
  • AREA - their first five albums
  • ALAN SORRENTI - ARIA (1972)
  • DALTON - RIFLESSIONI: IDEA D' INFINITO (1973)
  • ............................................................ .............

I didn't include new prog bands and many solo albums.

I heard about 50% of albums listed and agree with most titles.

But I have some notes.

  • LE ORME - all their albums from "Collage" (1971) until "Florian" (1979) and IL FIUME (1996), ELEMENTI (2001), L' INFINITO (2004)
  • - Why until "Florian"? IMO it is very good acoustic album, which, as well as its succcessor, "Piccola rapsodia dell'ape", deserves to be listened.

  • AREA - their first five albums
  • - Surely not a band for everyone. Only for those who like avant-garde stuff.

  • ALAN SORRENTI - ARIA (1972)
  • - IMO it's not a good choice for start. Good songwriter, but I think many (like me) will find his voice too annoying.

  • DALTON - RIFLESSIONI: IDEA D' INFINITO (1973)
  • - Totally agree!!! Transferred from vinyl (master tapes lost?), only 28 minutes long, but what a wonderful album! Great songwriting, flute and keyboard work. Why this band is not still included in PA?

In 1972 The Trip became a trio (Vescovi, Andersen and Furio Chirico) and released "Atlantide", a concept album based on the "lost continent". In this album their sound is influenced by ELP especially for keyboard playing.

  • "Florian" is included in my list, while "Piccola Rapsodia Dell'Ape" (even if a good album) isn't really progressive.

AREA is one of the best Italian bands from the seventies; although the music is not symphonic prog like PFM, BANCO or LE ORME, they were oriented towards free jazz, being influenced by SOFT MACHINE,  NUCLEUS and even GENTLE GIANT.

Alan Sorrenti's "Aria" is one of the best example of mediterranean prog, original and suggestive, especially on the inedit use of his voice, influenced by Tim Buckley. The suite "Aria", with guest musicians Jean-Luc Ponty on violin, is one of the best moments of the Italian prog.

Although I don't understand Italian the songs don't sound the same if they are in English. I don.t even know what the names of the groups Banco and le Orme mean. And I would like to know where the songs are about.

If they only knew what they are missing

please discuss about this topic. I would like to know your opinions on this

wow... what self-discriminating 'progger' wouldn't recognize the beauty of the sound of Italiian or Spanish being sung.  I think your progger friends need to lay off that metal crap and listen to something with a bit more....depth and craftwork to it hahahahh.

BANCO!!!!!  I love Italian prog.  I have well over 100 Italian releases and my CD orders are still dominated with Italian releases including many new bands along with the classics.  Banco had it all.  A great singer, best ever in my opinion.  Two awsome keyboard players.  The rest of the band is very good also.

Yes, they have GENESIS influences, but they have their own sound, typical Italian progressive rock from the seventies!!!

My vote is for Garybaldi : if you ask me why, please listen to the great guitar sound of Bambi Fossati ( and please look at the Nuda's cover!!) .

2nd place for Banco: great singer and great atmospheric sound: really new for the italian scene in the early 70
