I just made a realization; prog has made me a more literate and well rounded person. Because of prog I have investigated books like The Soft Machine, Anthem, and War and Peace, just to name a few. Aldous Huxley is now one of my favorite writers. I now know more about astronomy because of my look into the meaning behind the song Cynus X1. I have studied philosophy to understand lyrics of certain prog bands. Prog is rock music that expands the mind In many ways.

Overall, yes. However, I have also grown much more intolorant of most other music. Also, my social skills are a bit rusty, but that's probably due to Prog Archives, not prog in general.

Yes, by following up the lyrical content in a number of songs and viewing some of the more interlectual disscusions on this site has certanly been enlightening. However the more prog I ind the less tolerent of mainstream music I become, not that that bothers me.

I think most prog listeners would have found other ways to round out
their character if it didn't exist, but life (at least the music listening part)
would certainly be more boring. It probably kept me composing since, not
having been raised with classical music nor studied in a conservatory, I
realized their are other possibilities for exploring complex musical ideas,
and even doing so with a sense of humour (Zappa was primarily responsible
for this insight).

I certainly owe it to prog, to a certain degree, that I've started thinking in a more nuanced and refined way. Although I think music has this great effect in general, I think it's prog that's enhanced me for the most of it.
Plus, although I love classical and jazz, I feel prog has developed me most in terms of sensitivity emotion etc. (still, a piano sonata by Ludwig van may be second to none in this respect).
Plus, it made me feel that I can speak more foreign lanuages. Delving into a prog band seems to me at least as challenging as learning a new language. For years now I've been toiling with such "languages" as Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant, Rush, Yes, Jethro Tull, Genesis aso, and now I'm still "working" (labor of love) on VdGG (huge, huge band!) and Magma and Gong aso.
So my final guess is prog is great schooling for mind and soul. Immensely recommended for anyone!

Prog music makes you more open minded and gives you more tolerance about life in general. Since we're not "followers" of the mainsteam moneymusic and can make up our minds ourselves, and not buy the music the flock of sheep is told to do by so called journalist in the press.
This IMO is "healthy" and will make you a more rounded person.
We all know the progmusic itself an what it stand for so no further comments to that.

Well 30 years ago I was already reading Huxley etc but that was pre prog.
Well again 30 years ago I was at late night parties drinking large ammounts of alcohol and inhaling the smoke of substances being consumed by others,at the same time I was listening to Floyd,Yes,Tull,Crimson etc etc beoing played very loudly.

To an extent. I was reading classics and interested in philosophy and
all that before getting into prog, in fact it was those interestes that
got me into it to begin with, in a way.
But yeh I think prog has helped to 'round me out' slightly. For one I can now say I listen to intelligent music ;)

Yes, prog has indeed improved my life. Prog saved me from the mean streets of LA. It taught me important values, like melody and taste. It gave me back life. Through progressive rock, I was reborn. Before I discovered prog, I was a slob. Afterwards, I wore the best suits and women found me much more attractive. Prog saved my sex life. If you and your lover are having bad episode, just put on Yes's Tales from Topographic Oceans and watch her eyes light up as the groove take over her body. Let Jon Anderson do your crooning for you. I am also financially more secure. I don't buy groceries unless I know that Robert Fripp has opened his mouth and let forth his etenal wisdom that week. If he hasn't, then I have no reason to sustain my life force. I feel sad for those unfortunate masses who have never visited the Court of the Crimson King. What kind of age is this when there are poor starving Ethiopian children out there who have been DENIED having their souls purged of sin by the scourging sound of Geddy Lee's almost siren like voice? I hope to one day perform missionary work in those wrethed cultural wastelands. until then, I will sit here and feel the power of Tarkus flow through my body every morning. Prog bess you, everyone of you!

I'm afraid not. In the old days I used to listen to a lot of things. But prog is so good and so diverse, that I've become much more narrow minded. As it comes to music, that is... Prog music adds up to about 90% of the music I listen to!

Seems to me everyone would be better off listening to all music, not just prog to become well rounded. Maybe everyone would learn about astonomy, history, philosophy, etc. even without prog?
I know myself, I became aware of social issues because of other forms of music, namely rock, folk and punk. I don't want to mention names but some on this forum might become well rounded if they took a music appreciation course, opened their minds and listen to other forms of music.
Prog is great music but it has its limitations.

Nobody can say that music has made them smart. Maybe it has helped them realize what they truly like, and encouraged them to use their mind to their full potential, but it doesn't make you smart.
I think that if prog (or any other genre) makes up more than 80% of your music collection, you'll eventually reach a point where everything gets boring and look for a different kind of music. Then you'll fear you've lost your good tastes in music and go through a phase of "I hate music, it bores the hell out of me, and I can't stand King Crimson anymore" and start listening to too much soft rock on the local "great light rock hits for the whole family" station. And then you'll know you went wrong somewhere. Well, that's just my opinion.

Otherwise, it is education and loving, parenting, travelling, reading, etc (in brief, living a full life, and having a personality that is open to new experiences and outlooks) that have made me a more well-rounded person.
