Do you know http://dimeadozen.org - dimeadozen ? It is a torrent tracker of unofficially available material (from bands that approve this kind of sharing). There is lots of prog rock there, mostly live shows, everything in lossless format, like flac.

A great source of legal music.

I second this recommendation. There's tons and tons of Dream Theater torrents, and on a regular basis shows will pop up from much more obscure groups, from modern symph like Frogg Cafe to classic RIO like Henry Cow (or still more obscure stuff like Zao or Evohe, a zeuhl group who never even recorded an official release).

Great stuff. Also if you like jazz, check out all the Aka Moon torrents seeded by the band's soundman.

How "legal" is it? You say it is unofficial, so have the owners (who are not always the bands) of the copyright approved it?

How does this differ from "band approved" bootlegs?

Nothing to do with bootlegging, because they're free. Plenty of members are vehemently against bootlegging, and it is entirely legal because they only allow concerts where the owners of copyright have approved it. Illegal shows do crop up from time to time, but they're generally removed pretty quickly.
