now this may be an unpopular view but is anyone here in a band and had doubts about making it out of the local pub? because my band hasn't even played a gig yet or had a proper practice session and i was just wondering about other peoples views. ------------- You want the spoon? I was in a band for a couple of years and all we did was a circuit of Taverns and Universities. Unless you have very loyal friends and alot of them you may be playing in front of no-one...or a damn near empty place.Building a following is difficult as well unless you can play at the same place frequently. Chances are you will be playing at all sorts of different places(as we were) for nothing($) with a different group of people(small group mind you) each time. The important thing is remember to have fun 1st. Everyone wants to be famous, but chances are...it isn't happening. Even if you don't succeed you will always look back at the experience with fondness....it's a blast....go enjoy and make memories

it just seems so unfair. (bitching alert! leave thread now!) i meen some groups just get sraight on the wagon and of to famesville and millions of talented bands sit their in obscrurity and no one could give a rats arse. people working their socks of at gig of 500 people will never be noticed but those that play to crowds of 5000 and upwards can choose if this is going to be a good gig or not and be showered with praise even if the gig was crap, not caring for worse off bands because they got noticed and everyone else must therefore be crap. ------------- You want the spoon? It's sometimes tough to go to live shows with a group of musicians- they're always so much better than whoever is playing I had a bit of fun 'playing out' when I was younger (mostly bar bands and punk bands but that's all I could find around me at the time). Sure, most people dream of fame and fortune and I'm no exception, but I really liked the buzz you get from playing your music to appreciative folks. If you can get the crowd on your wavelength, it's the best feeling there is. Doing that kind of show more often than not is what I would call 'making it'. That's partly why I don't like most pop (and R&B and numetal and hip hop etc...); they don't look like they enjoy what they do as much as what they're getting out of it. As if the music is simply a means to fame and fortune or respect or whatever. i think if you want to move up and out you need to get some connections, or at the very least connections of connections. find out when some semi- to big name bands are coming to your town, just try to contact them and see if they need an opener, it doesn't always work, but eventually it will happen. ------------- *Remember all advice given by Asuma is for entertainment purposes only.
