I'm 51. I thought this might be an interesting post, after I was noticing the responses to my thread regarding 'Are your friends into Prog...'. I noticed a few responses of people less than 20 years old. Fascinating!

Well prog was most popular in the 70's
Thats propably because there are many old listeners to prog...because you dont hear anything about prog these days.

Prog fans are like jazz fans... one will find them at every ages but it is obvious that those that were teen-agers during the 70s were more exposed to prog in the media and acquired a taste for the style.
IMO, the great majority of people under 35 that are interested in prog were influenced by older relatives or friends or even parents.

That is certanly true for me (33yo). I have brothers 12-16 years older. When I was 16 and listened to GG, Genesis and Yes, people said that prog is dead, you were born ten years to late ;)

That's true that a lot of younger people here mention having first heard it in their dad's collection. I play it around my kids a lot, and they bop their heads to it, but mainly consume 50 Cents and commercial hip hop, because that's what their friends are into...most people start listening to music to belong to a peer group. Kids into prog show intelligence, in that it's not pushed as cool in the media or by their friends. I'm 47 by the way.

That might be the case for the majority but my favorite style of prog is
symphonic. I found progressive music through Dream Theater and Yes
(discovering them through liking classic rock, not prog.) That's why my
name is FragileDT giving tribute to my first (and life changing) Yes album
and Dream Theater. Now my favorite band, by a long shot, is genesis and
it has been for some time now.

I'm 19 and I'm here thanks to videogame music...
Two years ago, I was in high school. We were watching "The Wall" (yes, the Pink Floyd movie!) and I heard "Is there anybody out there?". I inmediatly recognized the note sequence: it was almost identical to "Succession of Witches", a song from the game "Final Fantasy VIII" (you can hear a midi here, if you don't believe me: http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/sony/ps1/index-classic.html - http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/sony/ps1/index-classic. html ).
So, I started an investigation regarding Nobuo Uematsu music (and his influences...).
And here I am, listening to Camel, ELP, Focus, Pink Floyd, and many, many others...

I am 46, and it is an excellent age to really know what you are talking about when it comes to prog. I grew up with music, starting with Beatles in the 60's, moving to rock, and glam in the early 70's, and then to prog, via Genesis, Floyd and Yes.
I still like most music genres, not so much rap/hip-hop though... This site has really revitalized my music interest in general and prog specifically. I am currently deep in an Ayreon-mode!

I'm 24. I started listening to heavy metal etc. about 12 years ago
In that time Metallica and Maiden were the top in Greece.
Then I moved to DT etc. so I would say I first listened to prog metal

I recently turned 52 & have been a prog fan for well over 35 years. I saw YES & ELP way back in the early 70s. I saw Genesis in 1986 (Invisible Touch Tour).
Prog continues to be my genre of choice, although I will admit that I'm not very up-to-date with a lot of the newer stuff. That's part of the reason why I'm here.
I enjoy Spock's Beard, Flower Kings, Glass Hammer & Transatlantic & am always looking for recommendations. I've heard a lot about Mars Volta here & on other forums & plan to check them out.

I'd say you're right and wrong. I'm 16 and I originally got into prog
through prog metal, but now I don't even listen to it anymore. It's a
good way for young people to discover prog, but once they do, I think
most of the branch out into the other sub-genres like I did. Right now,
I'm really loving post-rock as I continue to catch up on all the great
symphonic prog from the 70's I missed out on.

It's sad to see people my age with such a pessimistic view of our
peers. You listen to prog, I listen to prog, many of my friends listen
to prog... the problem isn't that today's youth doesn't want to
listen to prog, most people just haven't even heard of it. Of course,
there will always be some people who don't like it, but in general,
everyone I've introduced to prog has received it really well and wanted
to hear more. Most people at my school listen to at least some
interesting and/or complex music anyways, so prog is usually just what
they're looking for.

I think it's very exciting to see such a young crowd (including myself) who take an interest in the music. I think the internet may bring about a "prog revival" in the younger generations. All it took for me was a listen to porcupine tree and a visit to prog archives for me to be totally hooked. Well, actually when I was fairly young, I was baptized by fire into prog. I can recall listening to king crimson (in the court & in the wake) as early as 8 years old.

i love this thread!!!
Im 23, and im a physical therapist in a humble hospital here in the philippines. I first got into prog metal (rather than the yes, genesis type of thing...)and dream theater, symphony x, rush and queensryche was the intro band for me...
im so glad i discovered this site and found out that there are tons of other subgenres.
before my prog years (and counting!!!) i enjoyed funk, jazz, some old school heavy and hair metal bands (mr. big is my all time fave in this ), and mostly of robert smith's work..
coz of this site, i discovered King Crimson, Genesis, Porcupine tree, camel, mahavishnu, brand x, and loads of other really good prog music..
im really learning a lot from all of you guys here!!!

I'm 38 and new to the forum. I've listened to prog rock in many years, Pink Floyd and Alan Parson before I was 10 years old. These days it's mostly electronic music /TD, Redshift and more), Yes, Marillion, Porcupine Tree and a lot more.

There's a permanent "Member Ages" poll in the Assorted/Misc Topics section. Don't know that there's much value in resurrecting this almost year old thread.

Well said, Patrick! I suppose the best idea would be to close this thread, as it doesn't really add anything to what is already available.
