Do you know about the excellent Quebec's band Harmonium?
I think it is a shame to so few people know about this band. It is prog music at its finest!!

Haha.. yeaaaaa man, AMAZING BAND!!! Cinquieme Saison and l'Heptade are breathtaking, and their "epic" song "Histoire sans paroles" is amazing, Serge Fiori heard a melody in a dream, and composed it off of it.! amazing band

but honestly, they must be the best band out there lol... I mean, how can someone come up with such thing as "si on avait besoin dune cinquieme saison." its too beautiful, its almost inhuman!!! if he wouldve chosen to sing a bit in English and try to get popular in English regions and break the boundaries, I am sure that ALOT of people around the world would've loved them. But actually, I am happy that he stuck with French, it's something us Quebecois can be PROUD of! And for those outside, well, it's like finding the nicest diamond in the world

You are totally right! Maybe they didn't enjoy enough success due to their singing in french but it is so great to see that they were proud of sticking to their identity. Some people just couldn't do that : Simple Plan or Céline Dion

yep, lol... simple plan , its weird though, I mean... kids of my generation 14-15-16 are realllly starting to lose interest in those kinda bands at my school.. (which IS GREAT of course), people are really interested in classic rock, (some in prog...maybe like 10 hardcore proggers out of 600), and obciously some who listen to a bit of prog but enjoy different things. But of course you still have the rappers. immigrants mostly
But about Harmonium sticking to French, that I truly respect.

I really think a movement similar to the one of the 60s and 70s is coming back in Quebec, which is neat ... the hair is getting longer, the music is getting better (we have a lot of new bands, some a bit underground, that are making really good music compared to the pop music we hear all the time.. "godspeed you black emperor, Silver Mt. Zion, etc.."

I agree. Harmonium is a tremendous band and Cinqueme... is
truly a beautiful piece of art. you can even imagine yourself running
in yellow flower fields while the spring breese caresses you skin!

I actually haven't heard them. Can anyone recommend any particular song to
hear or album for a first listen of the band?

Anything they did was great but my personal fave is «Histoire sans parole» on Si on avait besoin d'une cinquième saison. PERFECT INCREDIBLE ORGASMIC!

Yes Harmonium is a great truly original Quebecois band ... I must confess though I listen to Pollen a bit more ... to listen to Harmonium you have to be in that special mellow mood I think

How lucky you are... out of 2000,
there's only me and 2-3 proggers. And those crappy bands like simple
plan are only gaining popularity. But, 60s and 70s is coming back, and
I do participate to this revolution! Teens of these days are only
trying to associate themselves to rich rappers, or other symbols of a
better life (see the topic about progger stereotypes). How disapointing it is.

And if you like Harmonium very much, you should also try "Deux Cents
Nuits à l'Heure", by Serge Fiori and Richard Séguin. One of my fav
album ever

I am ashamed to admit that I don't know about Pollen
I'll try it though. Thanks!

Listen to the sample of Tout Le temps (hope I've spelled that right ) on the main site ... a very interesting double keyboard sound ...
Admin speaking now: BTW, guys this thread is in prog polls and I'm going to move it to the main lounge, OK?

You should really go get it! It is second only to Si on avait... in my opinion.
|
Yes so I've heard ...the sample track here L'exil is pretty intense ... I haven't heard anything I don't like ... from the relatively light Aujourd'hui, je dis bonjour à la vie on the first album to the more dense moments on Si on avait

On L'Heptade, they worked with an orchestra and there are beautiful classical interludes of music keeping the whole thing very intense. It's the kind of music that grabs a hold of your heart.

Well that certainly applies to moments on Si On Avait too ... Histoires
sans parole in particular has a deep, deep feeling of melancholy ... ... I almost can't take it sometimes ...

One of my favorite bands!!! I really need to get my hands on "Deux Cents
Nuits à l'Heure", by Serge Fiori and Richard Séguin. Probably not an easy one to find, though

Hey guys, don`t forget their live album''En tournée'',where they play the whole of L'Heptade without the orchestral bits. But they do strech out on some pieces.Serge Locat was amazing on those instrumental strech, very undrrated keyboardist.Btw,I'm proud to see some youngster enjoying real music, not just star academie and McRadio. But,if you're fed up with radio, you can always listen to Cosmorock,a cool all prog show, every saturday evening, from 9 till midnight on 103,3 CHAA FM,in Longueil.

Taken at Woodstock? Used to be very tasty, alas old age (my problem
too) and chemical habits of the 60's and 70's (not my problem)
have created a different picture for 21st century.
