I've done a search and did not find an answer to my questions.
Who here is a prog musician?
What do you play?
Who are your influences as a musician?
I am a keyboard player, and play some bass as well.
My primary influences are Jethro Tull (after This Was), Gabriel
and Genesis (w/ Gabriel and Hackett), and early Kansas.
There must be a ton of musicians here ...

I play trombone in a jazz band as well as in a ska band, and
guitar/keyboards in a power metal band. None of them are prog bands,
but the music we write for the power metal band is really
prog-influenced, and even the ska band has the occasional riff in 7/4
for good measure.

Do vocalists in prog bands get to post?
I was in a band but just recently had to move across the country w/ my family. Sucks being 17....
Anyway, we used to cover a little Rush but that was about as progressive as we could get without a keyboard player. Problem was, we are all in highschool and into Yes and Genesis...try finding a kid in highschool who can play like Rick Wakeman and Tony Banks.....

I play trombone and I'm starting to sing a bit. I'm trying to form a band, but I really haven't had time to get around to it yet. I'm taking a music theory course that my high school is offering to learn how to write music (although I have quickly learned that I hate Counterpoint).

Some years ago I played in many rock bands. We played mainly original music with some covers (Led Zeppelin, Kansas, Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes, Faith No More, Radiohead, Hendrix and others....)
I even played in one band some Sex Pistols & Ramones covers. The lead singer was into punk and it was a good opportunity to make some money. The good part is that you only require 10 minutes to learn to play the whole song, only 3 or 4 chords.

I'm a keyboard player just like you, Skarabrae... I played in a band
for the most of my high school/ college years. We tried to make
something similar to Can mixed with Os Mutantes, and we succeeded: we
sounded just like that two bands put inside a mixer at full speed.
Without the blood'n guts, i mean. To cut a long story short, let us say
"we sucked".
But i have to confess i couldn't be called a "prog musician" for two
reasons: first, my main influence has always been Brian Eno. I've spent
the last ten years trying to play something as loud and noisy as his
moog solo in "Editions of you" with my old and trusty korg ms20. I'm
still trying...
The second reason is i'm really such a bad player... I've never been
musically trained, and work mostly by intuition, so i'll never be able
to play a Wakeman- like solo. To be honest, i've had my best times as a
musician manipullating analog synths, sequencers or (my favorite) a
small radio plugged to an amp and a lot of effect pedals. MW broadcasts
can give you a lot of nice surprises if you know how to turn the knob
properly. Ah! And that nice toy melodica a girl friend gave me years
ago...

As some of you may know, I am a prog (wannabe? Oh, let me be good with
myself this time :D) musician. I play keyboards in two bands, Elisena
(more metal and structured band, www.elisena.net, not yet fully on line
but soon we'll add our demo mp3s) and Ordine Geometrico Demonstrata
(www.ogd-project.org, the trio with which we are preparating the
12-hours jam session).
From a prog rock point of view, OGD are more interesting: fully
improvised jam sessions, done with a very progressive afflato. The site
is quite convoluted, but simply clicking in the centre you'll gain our
mp3s :D
We're not selling anything, we just do those jams for passion.
To fully answer your question: my main influences are undoubtfully
Jordan Rudess and Jon Lord, with some spices trown in by Keith Jarrett
and Ozric Tentacles and Italian Progressive by the compositional point
of view.

I'm not a virtuoso player like Emerson, Wakeman, Livgren,
ect., even though I listen to them, along with Banks, David
Palmer, ect. Never took piano lessons ... I've just been playing
for years.
I'd say I'm a prog musician because I play originals that are
not pop or straight rock. My songs are conceptual, and I rarely
follow typical song structure. I favor programming sounds,
textures, odd chord structure, and orchastration, over complex
playing. If I had to mention someone I play like ... probably
Wright, Barbieri, Jarre and Fast, would come to mind.
Cool to hear other players on here.

As for my musical activity, i have three projects: One is a prog-power metal band called Golgotha, i'm doing vocals/bass there. Another one is my solo project called Mnemosyne. i play all instruments. It's an avant-garde/space-rock/post-rock/metal project influenced by The Residents, Sigur Ros, Frank Zappa, Mr. Bungle... The other one is a post-rock project called Monserrat... i play bass/cello/theremin/guitars/vocals.

I play drums, percussions, and piano/keyboard. I want to learn bass.
Influences- Bill Bruford, Gentle Giant (as a whole), Phil Collins, and Zappa (with his zany, complex, insane percussions).
I have been in a few unoffical bands, all of which went absolutely noplace. I prefer to play prog, but i also enjoy to play swing and classical (not classical piano mind you). I have written a few songs all of which are horrible and haven't been used...yet (i hope).
O i can also sing...horribly.

i threw together an instrumental version of Captain Beefheart's "Moonlight on Vermont" in 4 hours, playing all instruments. unfortunately, the drums are synthesized on a MIDI keyboard because I don't have a drumset or know anyone who drums, it's all slightly out of sync because of my poor mixing, and worst of all the program I used to record it is Windows Movie Maker. I recorded a "video" of me playing each instrument (basically me sitting in a chair with headphones listening and referencing from the original track) and used it's AMAZING two-track capacity, then fused the two tracks and made a third, fused those, then a fourth, and fused that. Other than all these technological limitations, it's quite good if I say so myself, accurately reproduced with some personal touches with the bass and rhythm guitar, while the lead remains accurate. oh, and I brought in my friend who "plays" sax (he's REALLY bad) and got him to solo Beefheart-style over the second half of the track (the part where you'd usually hear "old time religion").
This Christmas I'm getting some real recording software and equipment, and once I get that and figure out how I'll post it here....or somewhere...how do you post stuff here anyway?

Who here is a prog musician?
Me.
What do you play?
I play in a band which exists
since 2 years. Once it was punk but we've changed our style into prog
(really, that's not a joke and it's not that kind of "prog" like
"Muse"). Well let me describe the style of our band:
Crazy melodies in odd time signatures who often change, a lot of
distortion, not very hard, more a mix of Stoner- or Noise-Rock and
classic progressive rock. Unfortunatly we can't find a keyboarder. Our
band has 5 members: 1 Lead-Singer, 2 guitar-players, 1 bass-player, 1
drummer
Who are your influences as a musician?
I'm extremly influenced by Gentle Giant.

I play piano (and by default that means keyboard most of the time, even
though I prefer acoustic piano), and guitar. I'm just learning how to
use a guitar pedal, though! I'm also trying to learn violin. I love
singing, too.
My first and foremost prog influence is Yes, followed closely by Opeth, then Renaissance. I also enjoy Rush, Porcupine Tree, Jethro Tull, Glass Hammer, and lots more. But I have many other not-prog influences such as Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Korn, Lacuna Coil, Leaves' Eyes... the list goes on.

To be serious: I always wanted to play electric guitar (Jimmy Page is my hero) but in the end I switched to the Spanish/classical guitar (Yamaha Andorra Classic) and taught myself a little bit from many different styles like blues, rock, R&R, classical and even flamenco because I love flamenco and when I noticed an add in a supermarket to learn flamenco guitar, I took 10 lessons and now I play Prog Andaluz I also owned a Roland Juno 106 synthesizer for many years so I learned a few chords. My vintage keyboard's wet dream came true when I was allowed to play on a Minimoog, a Memorymoog, a Moog Ribbon Controler, a Hammond B3 and L100 organ and ... my belove M400 Mellotron

I've been playing multiple instruments for over 10 years. I live in US, state of Louisiana, which is pretty dry from a prog standpoint. I play keys, guitar, bass, drums, some woodwinds, sing, etc. Because I play so much stuff, I haven't had time to really become a virtuoso at one particular instrument. I write and record stuff at home, but I'm somewhat of a perfectionist, so I've yet to make anything public (but I will hopefully by the end of the year). My stuff is kind of minimalistic--complexity by the interaction of instruments, not really one instrumental performance being high on the technical wow factor. I know tons of theory, but don't have a lot of showy flourishes or know many complete cover songs. Heavy influences are King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, Genesis, Radiohead, Brian Eno.
I'm also in a http://www.myspace.com/reasontobereave - Rod Stewart Extreme Metal Tribute band (don't ask).

Holy crap!
I find myself outdone and outclassed!!!!!!
I play lots of instruments... non-professionally. :) I'm pretty good
at piano, guitar, and singing, I think... guitar being the least good
of those... but 10 instruments at a professional level? How old are
you? You don't have to answer if you don't want to of course, I'm just
wondering how much time you've had to get to that level...

Drummer.
Can play Genesis and Gentle Giant almost perfectly. I also enjoy playing Avant-prog, Jazz-Fusion and prog/tech metal. I've gotten excellent responses by people I've played with too

I'm a guitarist, although I do enjoy drumming quite a bit, and also a little bit of bass. I'm planning on spending some time this summer trying to gain some versatility in my playing, in regards of becoming more steady on the drums and bass, and maybe even try to do some (simple) composing! Currently playing in a band, although the other bandmembers aren't very keen on prog, they mostly enjoy hard rock etc.

I'm in my very early 20's, currently at college, so I haven't had the kind of time I'd like to really get into some instruments, but I used to practice guitar 2 hours a day and I started on piano around 6 or 7 (trumpet around then too), and once you get proficient at a few, the others come much, much easier.
Of course, there are tricks to nearly mastering an instrument in 3-4 months.

I've studied a few instruments in the past (piano, guitar, oboe), but my emphasis is on percussion and live electronics. I play drumset, mallets (vibes, glock, etc.), assorted hand percussion (tabla, dumbek, riq, etc.) and found objects... These are amplified and processed through the modular synth + effects in real-time.
I'm not really in a prog band per se; the two groups I'm involved in have some progressive characteristics and influences, but all our stuff is 99.9% improvised.

I play prog when I have a chance to. Drums primarily but have a home studio and touch all the stuff eventually.
Web project anyone? I've had good luck doing this, it's usually a timing issue (finding the time).
I'm 54 so I love all the prog bands/players, grew up learning to play to these guys.
Thanks to my 2 kids I have a good job and am not out there burning up all my money trying to play prog for a living (anymore)

I am a classically-trained piano and organ player (mostly Hammond organ). My influences are pretty diverse, and I feel that they all contribute to my personal playing style.
I have been playing the organ at my church for a few years now, so I have been influenced by the long, expansive organ chordal style of playing (and have played more music in B flat than I'd like to admit).
I play in my college's jazz improv group (though I only did it to challenge myself), and have been influenced by the jazz styles of playing (modes, advanced 9th and 11th and 13th chords, extended improvisations).
I have been classically trained on-and-off since 10 years ago, the off-period being a moment in time where I only wanted to play by myself. I feel in retrospect that was just as important as continuing the lessons.
A group of my friends are very involved in the local folk community. And I don't mean folk as in whiny singer-songwriters; my friends go to contra dances and ceilidhs, folk festivals, and Morris and rapper dances. We 5 have formed a folk-style band, with myself on piano, electric piano, and Hammond organ, one member on fiddle and mandolin, another on fiddle and bouzouki, another on solely fiddle, and the last member on lead vocals (when applicable, we play a lot of instrumental folk tunes), acoustic guitar, and electric bass. I'm not going to post a link to our myspace page unless someone really asks.
I'm trying to make myself the kind of person you would NEED to be in your band, because these days keyboards are just given the short end of the stick and the guitar is overglorified as the most important instrument in rock music. My greatest fear is to be just another prog keyboardist.

3 minutes, must be a record
we don't have a real name yet, we're just going under the name Four Guys and Nathaniel (a playful jab at one of the band members)

I am the great guitarist, purplepiper. I have slain many musical foes in my 6 years of incessant practice. I consider myself a cross between al dimeola and robert fripp, with maybe some clapton thrown in for flavour. I intend to get a prog band together somehow and bring prog to greatness again!!! ha ha ha! Unfortunate that no matter how much skill you have, the public wants power chords and screaming...
------------- for those about to prog, we salute you.
