YOU MUST LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM.(deadwing- by Porcupine Tree) IT IS THE BEST ALBUM OF THE MILLENUM SO FAR.

This is a cut and paste from the front page. Well it was reviews like this that had me hunting down this album and when it surprisingly arrived in Australia i bought and listened the requisite six times and..........Hmmmm, what a dirge of a record. After three plays  i put it away and hoped that a rest from it would bring a new light and so i played it three more times..........no change. What was SW thinking?

By all means go and buy this album and don't take my word for it. I liked Coma Divine , In Absentia and Warsawa ( i haven't got any others) but Deadwing is a dead loss and is a word i strive never to use in my life comes to mind here ....boring and for an alleged Prog album that is unforgiveable.

2 stars from me. Is six listens enough?

I remember reading some of your other posts during the last few months, and from what I read I woudln't exactly call you open minded. You seem to have a n extremely low tolerance if things don't turn out as you expect them to.

BTW: The reviews DO SAY that Deadwing is different from the other PT releases ... don't say that there was no way for you to know.

Just out of curiosity: Have you ever bought any other album which you first didn't like and then it grew on you and you loved it in the end?

Six listens should be enough to judge whether an album has potential, and thus needs more listenings. Of course this is subjective, but in the case of Deadwing, I can tell you from one listen; it is crap.

If it is crap, why did it get all the good reviews? Maybe you just don't like it.

Hi Mike since i don't post that often i can only conclude from the following

1. You are stalking me (is that you in the car opposite my house)

2 You are extremely perceptive

3 You are overly defensive of records you like

4 I am overly critical of records i don't care for

5 I have an over fertile imagination and that isn't you in the opel

  1. not at all.
  2. hope so.
  3. no. I am defensive of albums which have been given good ratings by a lot of people, and then one person comes along and says that it totally sucks, just because that person didn't read the reviews. In like every second review of Deadwing it is mentioned that this album is much closer to Prog Metal than any of their other albums.
  4. that is true (IMO), and it is my definition for closed-mindedness. It's not intended as an attack - in fact BaldFriede reminded me that closed-mindedness is not a bad thing in itself.
  5. I once had an Opel ... but that was more than 10 years ago.

OK but i remain suspicious of that Opel link. I'll get Inspector Rex on to it!

All I can say is, that as a band's success grows it must be harder with each release to produce something that doesn't have more and more commercial potential to fan the flames of success. Can't blame any band for trying to encourage a larger fan base and PT have the potential to be huge.

I agree that, after In Absentia, Deadwing was something of a disappointment.

I know I will be able to go back to it in a while (a few months or a year) and I will enjoy it, but I need some time to pass to get over the disappointment after building myself up for a great new album. Instead I got just a quite good one.

PS The live show was a let-down too....

I also prefer In Absentia - but Deadwing was not a disappointment for me, not at all. I didn't like some songs at first: Shallow, Mellotron Scratch, Open Car. But ONLY in the first few weeks after I bought it.

Deadwing was a not a disappointment for me either,I loved every second of it from the very first listen.

And Shallow and Open Car are two of my favorite tracks....nice n' heavy.

Just curious.....why did you think they were a let down live?

I saw them last month and they were fabulous.

^ He doesn't like metal. I think that PT might be more metal in a live situation, even when they play songs from Signify or Sky Moves Sideways ... and I can only say: I hope so.
