"Coolness" factor comes and goes regardless of the quality of the band. Maybe one exception is the Beatles who have remained cool for 40 years. I remember there was about a 5 year period when Led Zeppelin was pretty un-hip. Then they became cool again.

what an eclectic collection of bands.
I love Jefferson Airplane, early Jefferson Starship and Paul Kantner's crew calling themselves Jefferson Starship today, but I did not like Starship at all...so its them, closely followed by Bay city rollers..I still have my tartan trousers at home somewhere

I heard U2 claiming they changed rock guitar. Sorry, but each song contains the same licks, and they just did an upside down version (whatever) of some common guitar licks.
Pretenious, self-indulgent - the critisisms of progressive rock - clearly apply to U2, the band the politically correct glorify. please excuse the spelling mistakes

all of u2s guitar output was just based on Pink Floyds Run Like Hell well im not all that familiar with them but every song ive heard the Edge seems to use alot of delay and thats about it theres actually a few exceptions now that i think about it but yah |

I voted for U2 for two reasons:
1. A few years ago, Bono pronounced that Europe ended with Budapest
(Hungary). This excludes most of the Balkans, including my wife's home,
Bulgaria. What a pompous ass!!
2. Huey Lewis and the News was not listed as a choice. Neither was Hootie and the Blowfish, for that matter...

To be honest, I couldn't care less about conceptions of cool- the modern 'cool' music is basically bad 'indie' (though the term has been blurred) such as Coldplay or Keane, and derivative punk bands.
I predict in many years that rap music will have an 'uncool' stigma attached to it though- already it's become a pale shadow of what it was in the '80s (and I hate the 80s model as well!!!) and has fallen into mindless bravado and braggidocio- a gruesome parody. In my opinion, most of the music about these days shouldn't be revered, and I'm 17!!
Yet, in regard to your poll, I'd find it hard finding anyone who would admit to liking Starship, KC and the Sunshine Band or Bay City Rollers, but Judas Priest are easily one of the most incredible and influential metal bands ever, and WHY were Grand Funk ever uncool?? I think they are as good as any rock band out there!! And to be honest, Triumph aren't particularly well known imo...
I admit to liking Journey, yet with some slight embarassment, as they probably are the cheesiest AOR band ever, so I'd vote for them....
I think Bon Jovi should definitely be on that list- any band that does lyrics like 'you lost more than that on my back seat, baby' should be deemed uncool forever!!
And U2 are way too ubiquitous a band for me- always present on these 'best albums/bands ever' polls, yet their music is way too bland and unadventurous for me- but I don't think they are uncool.

U2 is the lamest band full of no talent pricks I've seen in my entire
life. The guitarist's nickname "the edge" is a testament to
how incredibly un-cool they are. I hate Bono on a personal level
and if I saw him in person I would beat the crap out of him and I'm
dead serious. Bono is so freakin lame and so is "the edge" who
always wears a skullcap. Seriously, they suck soo bad.
Everything about them from the "custom U2" red and black IPOD to the
fact that they would think so much of themselves and overestimate their
influence to the point that they would name their album "how to
dismantle an atomic bomb" makes me cringe. And Bono is a no
talent hack who can't even play guitar, and just the name U2 is so
incredibly lame it would even be lame if it was a boy band name, let
alone a rock band, which they aren't.

Judas Priest' music has influenced so many good metal bands out there, they are definately not uncool in that department.
Unlike U2, they don't think are the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Unfortunately, they have become a parody of themselves with the leather, studs, motorcycles etc.
Yes, KISS and other glam/hair bands are the same, but no one ever took them seriously.
There is too much in the film Rock Star that is true.

But, if there ever was an uncool band, it would have to be Milli Vanilli.

Yes Huey Lewis and Hootie might get a lot of votes.

Not sure about that. There is an interesting discussion in another thread
about how Gong, Tangerine Dream etc. were maybe forerunners of todays

I think Marylin Manson is very uncool. His biggest hits are covers of 80's pop songs and his "own"

I don't agree, people in trance-ambient parties, discos or raves don't give a damn who is playing, which band is which band, even ELP knowing that, released re-works (A trance-rave mix) to gain new audience, but it was crap even for raves.
People at those parties just follow the beat and the work done by the Dj's adding sounds and synthetized rhythms, this doesn't mean Gong or Tangerine Dream are cool bands, ask any of the guys there who are Gong or Tangerine Dream and 99'9% won't have a fu**ing idea.
I stand in my point, since I'm 13 (1977) and a Proghead, our beloved music hasn't been remotely cool, they called us nerds, trekkies-Sci Fi nuts, Mythological idiots, insane, potsmokers, pompous bast*rds, snobs, etc.
I thought since Dream Theater, Prog Metal was considered cool, but last weel a member of PA told me that they were seen as satanist and addicts (a common stereotype) receiving a lot of pressure not even from Rap or Hip Hop fans (Which are the most today), but also from religious groups, so I believe things are still the same.
A cool band has the support of the radios, DJ's and musical industry, Prog as a genre never had it (except for a couple of bands).
So I insist Prog isn't cool, never was and most surely never will.

I voted U2, but the band that's the crappiest but gets the most
recognisition nowadays has got to be Green Day. They're not punk,
barely rock n' roll and probably use the same chords over and over
again with a lot of distortion so you can't hear the difference (or the
sameness). Seriously, the Beatles have 'harder' and 'heavier' stuff
than that.

Starship were uncool when they came into being and imo will always be one of the most uncool groups ever. Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship on the other hand are VERY cool.

You whiteys who voted KC did so cuz you don't know how to get funky and shake yo thing. Don't dis my man KC. He rocks!
I voted Starship because "Built This City" line up was f*cked. Sorry for breaking the profanity rule, but I think the moderators will make an exception here.
U2 and Bono are lame. They've done 2 good albums, notably Achtung Baby, but haven't made a decent record in 14 years. They suck. Rarely have 4 people made so much money for doing nothing. And what's really pathetic - they had to load fake reviews for "Atomic Bomb" on Amazon because the album was getting slammed. Here's my review on Amazon:
Caveat Emptor: there's a general rule of thumb for reviews for this album: bad or medicore reviews are written by real people, as evidenced by the fact that they have written other reviews. (just click on "see all my reviews")
In contrast, the 5-star reviews are brief and usually written by people who have written few if any other reviews. Hmmm. Very, very suspicious.
It's also very odd that about half of the 5-star reviews are written by people with Hispanic names - and most with only one review written. Perhaps a massive campaign of propaganda and lies was off-shored to Puerto Rico or Mexico.
Also these reviews consistenly refer to the band's 2005 tour, proving that U2 manager Paul McGuinness is saavy at cross-marketing. At least U2 is doing a good job of watching the bottom line.
It's pretty sad that a band that was once one of the greatest in the world has apparently resorted to flooding Amazon with fake reviews. Shame on U2.

I have to agree with the hype Green Day is getting a lot of praise for essentially making the same album as the previous ones they were condemned for.
Do you think they would be getting similar praise by the press if their cd was "American Genius", instead of American Idiot?
As the late Bill Graham stated, quote, unquote "a lot of these bands were willing the condemn the Vietnam War, but none were willing to go against their peer group and condemn the taking of acid which created just as many casualities". - Syd Barrett was not the only one
Let's see bands like Green Day be willing to go against their peer group and start condeming e.g. Meth, "ice", political correctness etc. It won't make them any better, but at least they will get honest praise from the press
P.S. On Bruce Springsteen's acoustic tour he insisted everyone be seated at 7:30, yet many times showed up a half hour late. The working stiff would usually get fired for showing up that many times late.
How is he representing the working person he claims to represent, when most working people can't afford his concert tickets in the $200 range?
