emule.
it's slow but it gets the job done reliably. and i like
downloading .rar files of entire albums and libraries as opposed to
songs.
the RIAA can suck on a fat one.

If you can't find it on soulseek, then you have to be very lucky to find it somewhere else...

You guys are all tripping. It's all about Bit-torrents for
prog. Azareus is the best program for torrents. Do yourself
a favor and google it.

Why am I the only one who has problems with Soulseek?I get good search results but actually getting something to DL is another story.
Oh well....I have found a ton of good prog using Shareaza.

Not that I use or know anything about this program, but-
Do you use a router to connect. If so you need to do some port forwarding on port 2234.

WinMx is no doubt the best (yes the patch works) because you can find
so many prog-related rareities from various continents. Nothing comes
near it for these type of finds, not that I keep those files, mind you! I also use Soulseek where I found goodies not found elsewhere too, but it's much more limited than WinMx.

No problem with this discussion, it's just about software after all.
Just a reminder that the site msut not be used to facilitate or encourage file sharing.
Thanks.

Have to agree Dennis. The shutting down of the WinMx Peer network didn't affect me because I haven't connected to it for about a year. Using the OpenNap network connection only I have not been dissapointed- seems to be full of prog lovers.

A filesharing system, but one where you can only connect to specific users on it - that's not entirely accurate but in this instance it'll do, because it means only those on campus can connect to it, so as long as no one from the RIAA is studying at Surrey, we're pretty safe

It's not the RIAA you have to worry about. England will have it's own Record Industry Association. In Australia it is ARIA (Australian Record Industry Association) and they certainly go out of their way to shut down file sharing in Uni's. All these industry association people know that universities are just a hot-bed of filthy little filesharing geeks who don't want to pay a cent for the right to play music, ignoring the fact that most of them wouldn't have two cents to rub together anyway. I still find it amusing to think that all these RIA's think that just because so and so has all these music files on his computer that were downloaded, then the music industry is out of pocket. They fail to realise that so and so would probably never have gone out and bought these because so and so can't afford it anyway.

I may be wrong though. In any case, I don't know the name of the UK association

I used to use eMule.. Everything I searched for was there, compiled in a nice RAR.
Though, due to my gonvermnent who voted for a new anti-sharing law and other sh*t like that I nowadays use Soulseek. Can't say I'm happy with the change, yet I cannot say as well I'm in pain about it..

I got scared when I saw people naming off pieces of crap like Limewire
and Soulseek. Fortunately, a small string of DC++ occured. You can use
BT sometimes, but DC++ is easily the best tool around for grabbing
music... which isn't illegal where I am, not that such a thing would
stop me.

Soulseek is completely different to Limewire. If anything, it's more like DC++ than normal P2P, except you're not restricted purely to the hub, and it's more oriented towards electronic music.

I don't use any because:
1. my dial-up connection sucks
and
2. if I need mp3 I go to the local flea market and buy cheap mp3 CDs with many obscure and old prog rock goodies.

NewsBin Pro and Usenet. I've discovered a lot of great music that way,
and many lesser-knowns have made sales based on getting me hooked (if
it's really good, I like to own the original).

although it sometimes takes a while. Very reliable.

if you have Windows XP Media Pack 2 it blocks the ports that allows you to download files from soulseek, you can only download if you have windows media pack 1. I advise you to try a new program to download music like Bit Lord or Bit Torrent
