Disclaimer: If this has come up before, Sorry.

System of a Down recently played Sacramento (CA, USA). The opening acts were The Mars Volta and Hella, a local group. The reviewer kept refering to "an evening of prog". I've never listened to System of a Down, but I've always seen them associated with metal music. Are they prog?

Id say they have Prog influence but not enough for them to be considered Progresive Rock

Yes, add System of a down as Progressive rock band...I´ve heard worse than that anyway. Just make sure next to the name of the band a legend like "(bad prog)" is writen .

YES!!!!!

We have been discussing this under the subject of  Prog metal the future of Prog, I believe it was. I hear the song "Question" almost daily on the Fuse, and If that is not Prog music than I have lost faith in what people consider Prog rock, or prog metal. The fact that the band is innovative, challenging the norm, using multi instrumental with foreign music and multiple musical style influences within a song, they are most definitely prog...I would say even more prog than Mars Volta who I see more as a Psychadelic band with prog aspirations (not saying that I don't admire the fact that we have bands stating that they are prog and that we are seeing a resurgence of Prog as being a GOOD thing)

It's the progressive vs. prog thing again.

SoaD is so progressive.

As prog as Rush, that's for sure.

I don't think that they are trying to be  prog,
Their style consists more of writing short and catchy tunes and make songs only of repetition\variations on these tunes.
The best example would be,IMO, Radio\Video.

And why did you put this in prog polls but didn't actually create a poll for it??

Not every metal band is prog.

Is Metallica prog?

No.

Is System of a Down prog?

No.

Simply a suggestion I heard once of Metallica being prog. Really, in the context of this poll, it's just illustratng my point.

The sound of the Metallica and System of a Down is completely different....other than that SOAD plays fast, and the singers scream like they are regurgitating the Devil and a double peddle bass drum is used...I would not even consider them Metal. (OK maybe their earlier stuff, but they seem to be evolving into a progier or artsier sound. ART METAL anyone?

If not Prog I would have a hard time putting any label on SOAD.

all alternate labeling suggestions welcome

I dont know, but they seem to be growing into a proggier style. They arent the same band that made "Chop suey" or "Aerials", with these last album they realeased they have let the former far behind in terms of complexity. I dont know if it would be correct to categorize them like progressive music, but i think they will be coming with surprises, they have lot more to offer, i think.

The band itself is Progressing, so in that regard it's "progressive" rock.

I know not what all of your contexts for a band being prog, but in my book, SOAD are a bit more of the "fringe" acts who can help to push listeners into music that takes a little bit more to get something than throwing on a CD and doing your homework. Muse are another great example: Cathy, and substance to back it up.

I agree with this, but I doubt a lot of SoaD fans will appreciate Symphonic Prog or Kraut rock, they'll (sadly enough) be more likely to turn to bands like Limp Bizkit et.al. in my opinion.

Semi-prog I guess, but not a band I feel belongs here.

Oh, and the lead singer is my alltime least favourite. There's something about his voice that just makes my skin crawl.

Yes.  I think they most definitely should be in the archives.  I don't think we should restrict the archives to bands that have a specifically 'proggy' sound.  Radiohead is in the archives.  If anything, I think we should put SOAD in the experimental section, because that section is described as "any music that challenges the commonly accepted notions of what music is," and SOAD has definitely done that.

How awesome. A place where I can talk about progressive rock and not hear "IS THIS ONE OF YOUR 50 HOUR LONG SONGS?!?!" I salute you. :D

  1. I agree to add all bands with a 100% Progressive sound
  2. I agree to accept bands that have mainly a Progressive sound
  3. I may admit some bands with a proggy sound as Prog related (If such a thing exists).
  4. I don't like but what can I do if most members want to add remotely Proggy bands?

But to admit bands that don't even have a proggy (understood as remotely progressive) sound isn't too much?

Well, lets add all AOR, Alternative, Indie, New Age, New Wave and any Metal band that has keyboards.

But better think of another name for this place, because it will be anything but Prog Archives.

SYSTEM OF A DOWN IS NOT PROG, NEVER WAS PROG, AND NEVER WILL BE PROG!!!!!!!!!

Does this really require discussing? System of a Down isn't at all close to Prog.

Possibly, I really like some of their newer stuff, far more than their original stuff.

I have heard on the grapevine that the forthcoming album "Hypnotize" might be their last album.  I think they want to finish on a high and not make a bad album, I don't blame them.

Lol, I actually catched one of their videos midway through on MTV yesterday (yeah, I surf to that channel every now and then ) and having never heard anything from the band, nor knowing what they look like, I thought to myself that it must be that band System Of A Down so many keep talking about even on Progarchives. Why? Well, because while definitely not being out-and-out prog or anything like that, they surely did stand out amongst the things one is usually exposed to on MTV...!

There is also a big article on them in the fresh issue of Finnish music mag 'Soundi' which has awakened my curiosity. I might look into them a little bit more in depth at some point.

NICE!!!... that is so damn right... Systed of a down.. to add them here would be complete non-sense, I dont see how they meet the sounds of Yes, Genesis, Camel. etc...

They use some prog elements, but  NO they don't deserve to be named as prog...

I don´t think they are prog yet, But in Mesmerize there are a couple of songs that were quite a surprise for me, like Question, Radio/Video, and others. I hope to hear Hypnotize in a couple of days, and then we will see if they are really approaching to prog.

I that if their are succesful with their last two albums, they will continue making albums but even closer to prog from now on.

We have to start deleting a lot of bands if this is the criteria...

So true!

Anyway, to put the actual music aside for a moment, Shavarsh Odadjian's beard alone ought to be enough to let the band in, I mean seriously, have you ever seen proggier face hair than his überlong goatee??
