I wanted to focus on some acts with longer discographies and thought I'd ask what are you top ten studio albums (LPs and EPs) for some of your favourite bands or artists?
I'll start with one in PA and one not in PA which had my first and second place albums for 2023, and where both acts have been very significant to me over recent years.
In PA, Swans:
Children of God (1987) White Light From the Mouth of Infinity (1991) The Great Annihilator (1995) Soundtracks for the Blind (1996) My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky (2010) The Seer (2012) To Be Kind (2014) The Glowing Man (2016) leaving meaning. (2019) The Beggar (2023)
Not in PA, Sufjan Stevens:
A Sun Came (2000) Enjoy Your Rabbit (2001) Michigan (2003) Seven Swans (2004) Illinois (2005) The BQE (2009) All Delighted People EP (2010, and an hour long) The Age of Adz (2010) Carrie & Lowell (2015) Javelin (2023)
------------- Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I observed before. It can be much like that with music for me; immersed in experiencing the moment.

^ & ^^ Thanks to you both. Originally I was thinking about making this eight albums. If that were the case, then Gentle Giant for its first eight would be one of my favourites. I especially like the early albums.
A fave of mine is Art Zoyd:
Symphonie pour le jour où brûleront les cités (1976 version) Musique pour l'Odyssée (1979) Génération sans futur (1980) Symphonie pour le jour où brûleront les cités (1981 version) Phase IV (1982) Les espaces inquiets (1983) Le mariage du ciel et de l'enfer (1985) Berlin (1987) Faust (1996) Haxan (1997)
Magma (with Magma I would love to do lives, but keeping with the program and even then 10 is too limiting):
Magma [Kobaïa] (1970) 1001° centigrades (1971) Magma (reissued as Kobaïa) Mëkanïk Dëstruktïẁ Kömmandöh (1973) Ẁurdah Ïtah (1974, originally Tristan & Iseult by Christian Vander) Köhntarkösz (1974) Üdü Ẁüdü (1976) Attahk (1978) Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré (2009) Félicité Thösz (2012)
Still love KA, Rïah Sahïltaahk, Sl*g Tanz and others. Magma iss de hundin.

Limiting this to either 10 studio albums or 10 studio albums I like from an artist takes out some of my very favorite bands. Led Zeppelin, Chicago, Steely Dan, Gentle Giant, ELP, Porcupine Tree and Mahavisnu Orchestra are some of the casualties. With that criteria in mind:
Yes
1) Close to the Edge 2) Relayer 3) Yes Album 4) Fragile 5) Going for the One 6) Tales from Topographic Oceans 7) Drama 8) 90125 9) Magnification 10) Tormato
Genesis
1) Selling England by the Pound 2) A Trick of the Tail 3) Foxtrot 4) Wind & Wuthering 5) Nursery Cryme 6) Trespass 7) The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway 8) Duke 9) Abacab 10) Genesis
Rush
1) A Farewell to Kings 2) Hemispheres 3) Moving Pictures 4) Permanent Waves 5) Signals 6) Power Windows 7) Grace Under Pressure 8) 2112 9) Caress of Steel 10) Fly by Night

Art Zoyd are so hard... they have so much music that I love. Haven't listened to some of it in ages just because it's so much. I'm just listening to Le marriage du ciel et de l'enfer, which is brutally good, and I had almost forgotten about that.

Thanks for all the lists thus far. I have not been able to bring myself to arrange my lists in a way other than chronologically even if I do have preferences, but here's an attempt du du jour even if it ends up being quite arbitrary. My most recent listen is College EP, some great music on it, but it seems inessential to me...

Steve,
When I was putting my lists together, I chose artists that are among my very favorites, artists that are in my top 10-15 all-time. Steely Dan, Mahavisnu Orchestra and Led Zeppelin, for example, come up short with having released less than 10 studio albums.
Gentle Giant, ELP and Chicago fall short due to not having 10 studio albums I like. I'm a massive fan of each of these bands.
Gentle Giant's first 8 albums I quite like. Acquiring the Taste and Three Friends are among my favorite albums all genres included.
My love for ELP is based on the first 4 studio albums and 2 live albums, which solidified them as one of the very best Progressive Rock bands. Those albums spent a lot of time on the turntable. After that, it falls apart. I like some of Works, but beyond that the other ELP albums I don't care for.
Chicago it is about the Terry Kath years. The first two albums are phenomenal. The rest of the Kath years Chicago discography is at a minimum solid if not excellent. But, after his unfortunate death they became a different band.
That brings me to Alan Parsons Project a band I like, but nowhere close to a top 20 artist for me. So, I did not think of them. But, seeing your list made me think that all their studio releases are at least decent. So, I'll give some thought of where I would rank their discography and post later.

I had originally started making this topic as eight albums per act, but then thought that it was not limiting enough, and this might present a more interesting challenge. To do Radiohead, I had to not only listen to an EP I did now know, but also appreciate it. Gentle Giant is one of my favourites for its first eight albums and my favourite Gentle Giant albums are Three Friends and Acquiring the Taste (those are awesome albums).
And while I allow both albums categorised as LPs and EPs, not allowing live albums can make it harder. With Gentle Giant, I do know and like both the live Playing the Fool, but also the archival live release King Biscuit Flower Hour Presents Gentle Giant, which would bring me to ten by Gentle Giant.

^ I had to stream an EP for Radiohead to get up to ten. Magma I have lots by, including lives, and very happily I was given one live CD by a member of this forum as well as many others recently. I had heard the album, one of its best lives for me, but did not own it. Not expected by that person, but I want to send something back in return, just not sure what yet. As for The Necks, I would have a few more to go. Hanging Gardens is one of the biggest music highlights I have been exposed to in the past decade. Such a great album, imo.

Those woud probably be my picks for KC as well even though I really have grown to like Three of a Perfect Pair also (although it admittedly took me a really long time to like it). The ConstruKtion of Light, while not horrible, sounds like a bit of a mess to me. The Power to Believe I bought again recently but haven't listened to it yet since I rebought it. I remember liking it a lot though.
For Yes I didn't include 90125 though. I like it and it's the first one I actually heard but from what I understand it wasn't initially intended to be a Yes album since that iteration of the band started out as Cinema. So with that in mind it's difficult for me to think of it as a true Yes album. ABHW has more of the Yes spirit imo but I didn't include that one either even though I'm a big fan of it.
For Genesis I think we chose most of the same albums except you chose the self titled album (shapes) over and then there were three. Kind of a judgement call there imo at least to some extent. I really like Genesis but I think by that point they were mostly a pop band. I think "silver rainbow" is really cool though and very underrated and of course both parts of "home by the sea." "Mama" might be the best of the rest but there's a few other good ones too. "That's all" is one I'm kind of tired of though and obviously "illegal alien" hasn't aged well. Nothing really bad on it though.

Inside (1973) Floating (1974) Power and The Passion (1975) Dawn (1976) Ocean (1977) Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes (1979) Colours (1980) Planets (1981) Time To Turn (1982) The Tides Turn Forever (1994)
the first 9 are an unbroken run after their 'false start' debut album of 1971 but the albums Performance and Metromania that came out in 1983 and 84 were a noticeable dip as the 80's got its AOR claws in them. By 1985 they were done but Frank Bonnerman and Klaus Peter Matziol later resurrected the band and have been releasing solid albums up to and inc Echoes From The Past (2023) and as far as I know still going.

^ Yep, it really does not matter. Still I think if I focused on GY!BE's and Rush's 90s to early 2000s runs, or second and third albums of each, GY!BE could do well comparatively. But I would not want to be accused of rigging such a poll even if it might make the results more even as one is way better known and much more popular/talked about band at PA. Just a thought...
Cocteau Twins
Heaven or Las Vegas (1990) Treasure (1984) Head Over Heels (1983) Aikea-Guinea (1985, EP) Garlands (1982) Blue Bell Knoll (1988) Victorialand (1986) The Moon and the Melodies (1986)* Four-Calendar Café (1993) Milk & Kisses (1996)
Note: I included The Moon and the Melodies which is basically Cocteau Twins plus Harold Budd, so a collaboration. Songs like "She Will Destroy You" and "Sea, Swallow Me" are wonderful to my ears.

Thanks for posting this, but I can't help but wonder:
With Discovery and Time ranked so high, where is Secret Messages?

Well, I've never been a fan of that album, except for Secret Messsages, Four Little Diamonds and R&R Is King. I guess I have to listen to it again.
Going back to the question itself; I don't find much similarity between Discovery and Secret Messages. It does sound a bit more like Time, though.
