...

Hi,

Mannnnn ohhhh mannn ... you just put this man back into the early days of Space Pirate Radio in January of 1974 ... all of these were on that first show, although the first thing played was "Earth Calling" by Hawkwind to open the show, and I think the next thing played was PFM with "The Mountain" from The World Became The World. Needless to say it was a bombastic start and a heck of a trip. The MAN albums were fun to play, and were always on the turntable with so many nice things to play. Always thought that MAN were outstanding, and when we saw them with Hawkwind, it was an evening not to forget ... both Mickie and Deke were superb ... and still one of the finest things I have seen.

All of Eloi was played as it was released, as was just about anything from any of these folks ... Second Hand became Seventh Wave, and both of those albums were played the day they were received. Things to Come opened one show, and it was far out ... but Psi-Fi was the album they ended up being known by ... they had a show in LA that I could not make it to (was sick!) ... and supposedly it had only 7 keyboard players ... only 7! Would have loved a bootleg of that show, or something, though I think it likely did not go as well as the members thought ... they disappeared after that!

This is one of those polls where I almost feel like there are too many of my personal favourites. I love seeing lots of music I appreciate, and it's nice to be able to join polls where I can happily comment on multiple albums (frankly, I'm never content just to post an album without at least one sentence to go with it -- too much of a windbag to be so succinct) but it does make it harder. In my own polls with personal faves I rarely vote as it seems rather pointless to do so, but I will try harder to make that effort in others polls.

Today I do with Brainticket's Cottonwoodhill. A.R. & Machines's Die Grune Reise, Amon Duul II's Dance of the Lemmings,      Ash Ra Tempel's Ash Ra Tempel, Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come's Galactic Zoo Dossier, Flower Travellin' Band's Satori, Gila's Free Electric Sound, Hawkwind's In Search of Space, My SOlid Ground, Pink Floyd's Meddle and more are also much liked.

I find "Echoes" very spacey.

5 stars 1971: Nektar - Journey to the Centre of the Eye -  https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLikNHjJ_cxzCit6gbG4uEQnIgRcLCTfij" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLikNHjJ_cxzCit6gbG4uEQnIgRcLCTfij

Achtung! Nektar are NOT German, despite the band being formed in Munich at the tail end of the 1960's, and despite them being based in Germany for much of their career. No, this band are as British as tea and crumpets and a game of croquet on an English summer lawn. Nektar have had a long and illustrious career, with many changes of line-up along the way, and it all began with this spacey album, the intriguingly-titled " Journey to the Centre of the Eye" (1971). The band are still going strong 13 albums and nearly 50 years later with their latest album "The Other Side" due for release in 2020. This album consists of 13 tracks, although it's really just one long spacey suite of music as there are no noticeable breaks between the songs. Let's travel back in time now to the halcyon days of 1971 and take a "Journey to the Centre of the Eye."

The album opens appropriately enough with "Prelude". This brief 1-minute prelude features spooky, swirling sound effects and mysterious noises to put you in the mood for some classic Space Rock. We're in Hawkwind territory here, so hold on tight and prepare for an ""Astronaut's Nightmare". Strangely, the opening to this song reminds one of a Beatles' number, but that first impression doesn't last for long. This is pretty impressive stuff with the keyboard player going hell for leather on the Hammond organ and with the singer sounding like he's on some far-out psychedelic acid trip. The guitarist is no slouch either as he fires off some stunning guitar leads, not to mention the drummer, who's pounding away on his kit in true Space Rock tradition. It's freaky, it's spacey, it's mysterious, but most important of all, this is great music. Prepare to be amazed! If you can't "Countenance" that, then how about this, because this is Track 3: "Countenance". The pace is now slowed down somewhat with some very pleasant and laid back organ playing. Don't be fooled though, because that was just the opening and there's a wild psychedelic guitarist on the loose and he's here to show you what he's made of with some good solid riffing. The song ascends triumphantly into a tremendously uplifting crescendo of sound to take you into Space Rock heaven. We now arrive at "The Nine Lifeless Daughters of the Sun" which is presumably about the nine planets of the solar system, although there's nothing lifeless about the Earth, or indeed this instrumental rip-roaring organ-driven number. Onwards now at Warp Factor 5 to Track No. 5 "Warp Oversight". There are lots of spacey plinky-plonky noises to be heard in this eerie number with a Hawkwind-style spacey rhythm phasing in and out of the mix. It's all very atmospheric and mysterious, but no less than you'd expect from a classic Space Rock album. We're now almost halfway through our journey as "The Dream Nebula I" closes out Side One. Just lie back and enjoy because this is beautiful music, and there's more to come too as "The Dream Nebula II" continues on the opening of Side Two of the album. "It's All in the Mind" is up next, although it's not all in the mind that this is a great song and a superb album overall. And now onto "Burn Out My Eyes", the longest track on the album, running at nearly 8 minutes long. Again, this is another song that's designed to carry you into orbit on a rocket- propelled blast of Hammond organ, wild guitar riffs and a powerful singer soaring on a wave of emotion. Onwards now to "Void of Vision", a manic free-for-all as the Hammond organist takes off on a flight of fancy, throwing caution to the wind. Track 11 "Pupil of the Eye" gallops along at impressive speed, firing on all cylinders with a pounding rhythm and the vocalist giving it his all and more besides, in the style of David Byron of Uriah Heep. "Look Inside Yourself" now for the penultimate song on the album with our fantastic journey nearly at an end. It's a short 1-minute barnstormer of a song which takes us into "Death of the Mind" to close out the album. The grand finale to the album is a bombastic and grandiose song full of triumphal pomp and ceremony to conclude this superb album in fine style. The journey ends, but this was just the beginning for Nektar!

This marvellous album of classic Space Rock has really stood the test of time and it's sure to delight fans of Hawkwind. The album sounds as fresh today nearly 50 years on, as it did at the time of its release when Space Rock was just taking off, way back in 1971. "Journey to the Centre of the Eye" deserves a treasured place in any Prog-Rock/Space Rock music lover's collection. With a debut album as impressive as this, Nektar's later albums have got to be well-worth a listen too.

I'd have to get my coat and hand in my prog card at the door on the way out if I'd neglected to include Pink Floyd in a Space Rock poll. Tongue

I know I already responded to the same post and it might be seen as rude to butt in here (not sure the right forum etiquette for such situations), but I don't think that all albums by Pink Floyd should be in a Space Rock poll. It depends on the album, depends on the track even. I do think that Meddle has enough space rock to qualify for this poll.

I think this is the last time I'll vote for PF (which for me is a sure winner here)...

Hawkwind are 2nd... though for me, Eloy will be getting a good few votes in future polls.

Meddle may well be my favourite Pink Floyd album -- I think it is, I sometimes say Atom Heart Mother really for the suite. I voted for a lesser-known, Brainticket (do love it), in part methinks because I knew Floyd's would get so much love despite that Pink Floyd album having been more important to me. That said, I genuinely love various albums here and consider quite a few here to my amongst my favourite albums of all time. And 1971 is such a great year for music. I talk about how I love all years from the late 50s up, but clearly not all are anywhere near approaching remotely equal to me. 1971 is "da shizz" in my preferred vernacular.

Yes, 1971 was an excellent year for Space Rock, and with that said, here's a list of some lesser-known Psychedelic/Space Rock albums from 1971 which I didn't have room to include in the poll:-

^ I love Catherine Ribeiro & Alpes - Ame Debout. i would not have expected to see Chilliwack there, but then I know them for the later AOR phase not the psych stuff. I am not only biased against CHilliwack for its AOR hard rock but also because I don't like the town. Beautiful mountainous areas near it with wonderful lakes, but the actual town I kind of hate. No offence to any who may reside there.

I was surprised to see Chilliwack listed under Psychedelic/Space Rock too, but I like them and I'll take your word for it that the band are better than the Canadian town of the same name. Smile

A lot I love here: Pink Floyd, Gong, Eloy, ADII...

My vote goes to Second Hand

As Meddle will run away with this I'll vote Hawkwind - In Search Of Space ahead of ADII on the basis they have no votes

Funnily enough, I was expecting Hawkwind to win this poll easily. Wrong again. Embarrassed

I don't easily get shocked, but beat Pink Floyd, seriously?

Maybe I should give my Meddle CD another listen to see why I'm Lost in Space when almost everyone here favours Meddle over In Search of Space. Smile

"Echoes" is a monster, and it's Pink Floyd, man. Pink Floyd is a monster. Hawkwind is great, and it's got one of my favourite albums here, and I didn't even vote for the Floyd representative, but to some in the anals (or annals even) of history, Hawkwind is just a feathery fart in the wind (someone give that bird some Beano) compared to the mighty echoing [pillow of] wind of Pink Floyd. It would be a Fearless bookie indeed that would give In Search of Space the best odds. Betting is something that some should not Meddle with. Meddle is not one of THE most talked about Floyd albums, but still very popular and it's still Floyd.

Hawkwind in search of Space
Gong Camembert electrique
Nektar journey to the centre of the eye

First two are classic 'space rock'

Only know Meddle. Doug sent me a copy of Eloy's debut album many years ago and it's a long way different from the future version of the band (no keys!). There is only one Hawkwind album I like and will have to wait until 1977's Quark Strangeness and Charm when it will be presumably be up against Ocean (Eloy) and Animals. Don't know anything else here. Strictly ''prog'' is my game, never much got into 'psyche', never appealed to me and neither has much jazz fusion over the years. Give me a more classical based approach ie symph prog and I'm generally happy. Oh just noticed the Polyphony album. think I may have a copy somewhere. That's great so will vote for that.

Pink Floyd
Amon Duul II
Gila
Ash Ra Tempel
Then the rest...

When it comes to Floyd my top three are Dark Side Of The Moon, Meddle and A Saucerful Of Secrets

Admittedly, I wasn't a big fan of Catherine Ribeiro to begin with, but persistence paid off when I heard "Paix" for the first time today. Thumbs Up

Space Rock:1971  the title sounds like a play or movie... which in those years was a "play".  I'm going with this selection: 1. Pink Floyd-Meddle ( I like to play Echoes on the Wurlitzer in Waffle House as I exit  )
                     2. Amon Dual- Lemmings
                     3. Hawkwind-Space Ritual

If Space Rock was a movie, I'd go to see it, especially if it sounded like this.  https://emojipedia.org/flying-saucer" rel="nofollow -

I find "Echoes" very spacey.
