Somewhere at the intersection of post-rock, psychedelic folk and raga rock lies Myriad Valley, a one-person project from Minnesota by an American musician known only as "Joe." Information is scarce on Myriad Valley, which began in 2021 and appeared in late 2022 on the Was Ist Das? label with their debut cassette Otherworld. Using effected guitar, hand percussion, bells and tanbura, Joe builds towering melodic folk drones stretching beyond the horizon, a cinematic instrumental music which evokes scenes of warmth and safety, forbidden occult atmospheres and melancholic introspection. Beguiled by their style, Was Ist Das? became eager distributors for Myriad Valley's 2023 sophomore, Eternal Space of Mind, and a third, self-released LP, Shining Memory, arrived just a few months later in a handmade limited edition like the rest of their discography.
Myriad Valley will be welcome to those familiar with Pelt, Six Organs of Admittance, Steven R. Smith, Third Ear Band and, most especially, Natural Snow Buildings.
