A very simple and much more limited poll this time with no multiple choice.* I decided on seven classic Progressive Rock bands and the first album they released in the 2000s (with Magma I prefer 2009's E-Re to 2004's K.A). Camel - A Nod and a Wink (2002) Eloy - Visionary (2009) Focus - Focus 8 (2002) Gong - Zero to Infinity (2000) Kansas - Somewhere to Elsewhere (2000) King Crimson - The ConstruKction of Light (2000) Le Orme - Elementi (2001) Magma - K.A (2004) Premiata Forneria Marconi - Serendipity (2000) Rush - Vapor Trails (2002) Van der Graaf Generator - Present (2005) Yes - Magnification (2001) Feel free to vote with limited familiarity. You need not actively compare them all and I'm not asking for best. Simply choose an album of these seven that you know and like or even choose based on the tracks below -- I don't tend to like, nor do contests. As this is in Prog polls, here is the longest track off each album for those that might want to check out some music. 1) Kansas 2) Rush 3) Le Orme 4) Eloy 5) King Crimson 6) Focus 7) Yes 8) Camel Le Orme's Elementi might be my favourite album by them but that Kansas album is so strong, not surprising as it was the last Kansas album to feature both Kerry Livgren and Steve Walsh. Vapor Trails is a top five Rush album for me. Then good 3.5 stars albums from Eloy, Crimson and Focus. Yes and Camel are into 3 star territory and the rest I don't know.

Its funny, I usually agree with Richardh when it comes to these types of polls, but I couldn't be more different here?! 1) Camel: It's a beautiful album, their best since Nude which it's on a par with... I listen to it often. 2) Focus: Possibly my fave of their 'recent' albums, although they are all very close in quality. 3) Yes: Solid 4 stars, maybe the Keystudio material is the only thing to beat it in 30 years. 4) VDGG: No-one will pretend it's up there with the Classic era, but it's the best of their comebacks. 5) Kansas: Not heard it in quite a while now, but it was a very good return to form IIRC. 6) Eloy: I love Eloy, but this was a bit lacklustre... now, Ocean II (1998) would have been higher. 7) Rush: Has always left me completely cold tbh... I've tried and tried to like it, but it's a noise. The other Five, I will listen to when I get time. ------------- Music has always been a matter of energy to me. Gong: I thought this was alright actually, although this sort of loose, free-form Jazz-style lies quite a long way from my natural, more guitar-orientated sphere. Sort of thing I'd listen to occasionally, although I don't think I'd own too many albums of this nature? KC: Yes, I've heard this before of course, and my struggle to 'like' post Red KC rather than merely admire what they've achieved continues... too cold, angular and technical for me these days and a million miles away from Lizard, arguably my fave KC. Magma: Tried Magma on a couple of occasions before out of curiosity and I can understand why some members become Zeuhl-heads; it gets quite hypnotic in places, but it's not something I'm ever going to listen to much of. Le Orme: A beautifully executed, melodic track with great guitar work! They are on the list for listening to more stuff from their classic era. Again, I've tried them before and always found them be OK. I'll dedicate some more quality listening time to them, going forward. PFM: Very accessible, melodic, MOR prog-lite piece; accomplished, nothing objectionable here but nothing to get too excited about as it's quite safe. Won't mind listening to the album some time, but it wouldn't win this poll. Anyway, thank you Greg for the great thread!! I know I don't listen to the tracks you put out as often as I should (but I have my own listening pile too, and it's a battle for time and priorities) but I'll try harder in the future and this thread piqued my interest!

While it's not my favourite Magma album (that would be the debut) even of the more modern Magma (E-re does it for me), I still give it to K.A. I have complained that it is too Magma-Prog by numbers, and maybe even made to be too accessible for more "mainstream-prog" audiences, it is a fine album and gained many new fans. I had wished that it would be more jazzy and classical (to use the general music term) and less rock before, but I do like it. I wish to thank Ian for noticing that I missed King Crimson in the poll before and especially to Jared for suggesting several acts that I strongly feel should have been thought of by me and included. That made a way better poll (and thanks for your great commentary). Some times I stand by what I do and am happy with the results even if others are not, and sometimes I am not. Took a few tries, and some advice, but I like how this turned out. Tangerine Dream is one I thought of at first but I didn't feel fit. I had heard most of these in full. One thing with Le Orme's track that I mentioned (I have the album but have not listened in full for many years -- first Italian Symphonic Prog band I got into) is that I like how it brings to mind Contrappunti's Maggio (one of my favourite tracks; bombastic). I do like the classic run of Collage, Uomo di pezza, Felona e Sorona (masterpiece imo), and Contrappunti much more. That Gong is one of my favourites from this list, in my discussions with others, I liked this much more than they did. Happy Thanksgiving Monday, Canada! ^^ It's turned out to be a very good poll Greg; you're very good at them and this one gave me more food for thought than most, because it was of personal interest. If I don't participate, it will be because the artists you include are only vaguely known or completely unknown to me. I know you're fairly well past Rush, Yes & Kansas posting but it's good that you do occasionally, because it draws participation in from most forum members. Now, if I was to commence a thread of my own, it would be along the lines of naming an album which garners a significant amount of popularity, that leaves you completely baffled. Try and put into words why it leaves you so cold and ask others to help explain why they like it so much!  I've got a small handful I can think of, but I think Rush: Vapor Trails would be top of the list!!  ------------- Music has always been a matter of energy to me. | Well it's definitely not Vapor Trails. I voted for Magnification but probably should have voted for Somewhere to Elsewhere by Kansas or at least that would probably be number two. I recently bought KC's TCOL again and it just sounded like one big mess. Oh well. I also recently bought Le Orme's Elementi and it sounded almost as good or maybe as good as their classic albums. |

Of these, it's King Crimson. The ConstruKction of Light is my favorite album of theirs.
