Cosmic Putrefaction is the Italian progressive death metal project of Milan-based multi-instrumentalist Gabriele Gramaglia, the musician behind Vertebra Atlantis, Summit and the Clearing Path. Initially signed to I, Voidhanger Records before switching to Profound Lore in early 2022, Gramaglia started the project to finish material originally written in 2012 for his first band Oaken/Throne. Cosmic Putrefaction made its debut with the 2019 LP At the Threshold of the Greatest Chasm, featuring Convulsing's Brendan Sloan and Hadit's XN as session vocalists and perhaps the most straightforward work out of all of Gramaglia's various projects. The virtuoso's progressive inclinations and ever-present Emperor/Immolation influences inevitably revealed themselves across the following three albums: 2020's The Horizons Towards Which Splendour Withers, 2022's Crepuscular Dirge for the Blessed Ones and 2024's Emerald Fires Atop the Farewell Mountains (the latter two spotlighting Nero di Marte's Giulio Galati as guest drummer). The trilogy is also linked by a Dante Alighieri-inspired concept detailing the journey of an unnamed character experiencing a planetary cataclysm, escaping into the metaphysical underworld which is itself in a state of collapse. Gramaglia's refreshing modern take on old school death metal aesthetics is sure to inspire fans of Blood Incantation, Inanna, StarGazer, Ænigmatum and Convulsing.
