Both of these albums are popular with Floyd fans, but which do you consider is the better? I will find the answer interesting, as I like both, but don't consider either to be their best, therefore I have no bias here. I think this might be a close one!

Animals, cause I hate Welcome To The Machine, and Animals is all consistent

You know?, one of the many mistakes I often make when I listen to music is that I separate every song into it´s different parts. I do really pay attention to every detail, somethimes even loosing the main purspose of listening, which is enjoying the music.

I used to think of Animals as a great album, with those three impressive and extended songs hard to dig in a few listens. But then, one day I wanted to write a review. I listened to every song no less than 7 times, (after listening to them for years).

I used headphones and heard the songs from an MP3 so I could go on either direction (back and forward) with the timming bar. I listened to every second of music and wrote down my impressions of every single minute of it. This way, I discovered a few things, and it´s funny to think of a song in terms of minutes and the lenght of every passage, the lenght of every "lost" second and the times a theme or chirus is repeated during the song. In the end, it´s a ridiculous thing to do, because finally, a song is either enjoyed or not for what it is as a whole.

Well, anyway I did it. The three main songs in Animals have something in common. Each one consist of a main theme, which is rather appealing and well composed, with some very innovative details here and there, like that Waters´ singing that turns into a guitar by Guilmour. Well, that´s one thing, then comes the middle section which usually extends for too long and become repetitive and sometimes monotonous. After the middle section comes the reprise of the main theme played in the beginning of the song. So, in the end it seems like you´ve listened to a very large and complex song not very understandable.

In reality, you´ve listened to a theme that goes from 3.5 minutes in Pigs to 8.5 minutes in Dogs, a repetitive middle section of at least 3 to 4 minutes and the repetition of the exact same main theme.  If you add the length of the main themes which are the real creative and original parts of the album, you have 16 minutes of effective music ¡¡.

Something else I consider a flaw in Animals, is that the songs are hardly identifiable from each other. It´s probably just me, but no matter how many times I´ve heard them in the past, if I don´t listen to them for a period longer than 3 months, I have a hard time coming up with the name of the song. The moods, textures, sounds, concepts, and general feeling are just too similar. However, I love this album and may listen to it with joy.

Yet, “Wish you were here” is my favorite Floyd album. In particular,  “Shine” is my fav. Floyd song. This one presents such passion, such feeling and such implicit energy that keeps me amused for as long as it lasts. It is a song for which I have no reservations calling “a beautiful song”. The songwriting and the conviction with which it was played is impressive as well as the different moods and textures it shows.

Then, “Wish you were here” is a wonderful song very inspiring. A classic. “Welcome to the machine” is a little monotonous but interesting and “have a cigar” has a hooking chorus very entertaining.

Well, my vote is for “Wish you were here”

Does it really matter? If I can enjoy them both, why choose? I love them both. They are different in sound and spirit and that is why I hear each one of them in different moods. WYWH is more to relaxed times in which I need a kind of "soul purification" process. After that album I feel for some reason, cleansed. Animals is for times when I am mad at something or upset or just pissed over some matter. The lyrics suit me just fine (as a misantropic s.o.b) especially Dogs which is superb both musically and lyrically. I choose them both

WYWH is great too, but there's something in it why I think it's a little inferior to Animals

their both great albums

but I vote for "WIsh U Were Here"- because he got more accentuation for the music, i mean in "animels" Roger  Waters take control on the album... but in "wish U were here the band is more unified and its good.

so WYWH-is my choise

Wish you were here definitely, the best album of all times, and the band's favorite. I personally prefer it mostly beacuse Wright's presence is really strong in this one, and he is almost unheard on Animals.

WYWH, sheer brilliance from beginning to end.

Animals has some fantastic moments, but it also gets a tad sparse and repetitive, IMHO

Thanks for the interesting responses so far folks! I said this could be close, and so it is turning out to be. Out of interest, although neither is my favourite Floyd album, I would certainly choose Wish You Were Here. It is more melodic, and more of a band composition. Also, I think Gilmour's playing is better on it. Animals is too angst-ridden, and lacks a little in the melodic region somehow. I also have trouble naming the individual tracks on it, if I don't listen to it for a while. I also think Rick Wright's contribution is far greater on Wish You Were Here. Still, it's all down to personal choice, as indeed it should be. Whichever album you vote for, it can't be right or wrong to do so! It just shows, like I always say, that all good bands have a number of albums the fans find it hard to choose from, because their levels of creativity are constant over a period of time. Far better to have such a glorious choice, than to have a band with one outstanding album, and the rest, at best, mediocre.

Wish You Were Here!! - Wonderful musicianship and possibly PF's best "sound-scape" album.

Animals is great too, but harder to listen to - as mentioned already very angst and difficult to distinguish the tracks from each other - still it is a PF masterpiece as is most of their albums.

Wish you where here all the way! I love every song on the album

I find Animals very conceptual and with most impressive musical passages... It's like listening to one single track... Hard to notice at first when a track ends and the other begins...

Don't get me wrong... It isn't that I find Wish You Where Here less conceptual than Animals... It is just that I love each song in the Animals album... But I also like WYWH, specially the tracks: Shine On You Crazy Dimond and Welcome To The Machine... They are a blast!

Why are this polls so hard...???

You´re not alone on that chessman. ...One advise for you. Listen to the album. The song that has PIGS sound effects is "PIGS", the one that has Sheep sound effects is "Sheep" and dogs has no effects on that regard.

You see,?, Pink Floyd had the same feeling about the album after it was finished. They didin´t know if they had recorded the same song three times or had lost two of the three they had recorded. So they decided to take these three tracks and put a different name for each.

Ok, Ok, Ive voted for WYWH, but I am deciding my vote from about 7-8 yrs ago, which was the last time I have heard Animals...

Unfortunately, I found animals musically boring with Roger whinging (as opposed to opening his soul, as he did on other albums).  I remember purchasing it on vinyl, listening to it once or twice, and shelving it....

WYWH is another story, with Shine on... taking me on a sonic journey, and a fitting 'memorial' to their friend Syd, and Welcome to the machine showing us a darker side to a band that was still experementing with sonics (good on em).

Mind u.... This is based on what i thought 7-8 yrs ago.  Am willing to give animals another listen when I get it on CD (to be honest, its not a high priority album, but I have the strangest feeling that I may get a 'Floydian' birthday present this year).  I may change my opinion on it.

I just tied the vote 84-84. It's a toss up.  I always liked Animals and the guitar work is great, especially that bit at the end of the album. It is also one of the most lyrical Floyd albums.  Wish You Were Here is great for the keyboards.  It has such a sparse texture but Wright just fills it up with all those sounds. And all the great one liners.  "It's all right; we told you what to dream." and "Did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage."  Great stuff!!!

Well of course Shine on you crazy diamond part I,II,III is one of the best tracks ever. the next 2 tracks
are somewhat weaker though. Animals is always on a high level with Pigs and Sheep especially good.
I think Animals and the Wall are the best Pink Floyd albums.

I find Animals to be a much more consistent album. Dogs is one of their best songs. And that closing, jangly riff at the end of Sheep is my favorite guitar riff from Gilmour.

Wish You Were Here is also excellent with the classic Shine on You Crazy Diamond suites, however Welcome to the Machine is a bit tedious and lacklustre. Have a Cigar is alright, and Wish You Were Here is a nice radio-friendly song. Overall the album lacks consistency and I am really surprised at how high it is rated on the Prog Archives list... oh well.

I think that Wish You Were Here is their perfect album...followed by Dark Side, Animals, Meddle, Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and The Division Bell.  The only Pink Floyd albums that are sub-par are The Final Cut and AMLOR.

Both are incredible albums but i said WYWH

Musically it is floyd's best and shine on outweighs any song on animals. This might sound wierd but animals is almost to consistent for me. From dogs to sheep theres not enough emotianal change. WYWH has 5 totally unique and brilliant songs.

Both albums come from the end of the DSOTM era (which is my fav) so its an easy choice for me.

If it was between WYWH and Meddle it might be different.

Animals ROCKS though!!! Its impossible for them to make an album that i can call bad

Animals = Pink Floyd's most over rated album IMO.

WOW, 106-106

Man people are REALLY divided on these albums.  I'm going to vote in a second and tip the scale...  I'm just trying to decide which way...

I love both of these albums, but I have to go with Animals, It has a harder, darker vibe to it.

Darn! I wanna change my vote. Wish You Were Here, please. It's really grown on me and has surpassed Animals by Far.
