Hello
Forgive me if this is the wrong spot for this... (mods feel free to move a more appropriate section if needed)

I have been on here as Ariscotle for years now (I think since 2008)... recently a friend of mine has sort of commandeered my common internet name and used it for some things I do not approve of.

I've been purging this name out of my life, and coming here see its still my user name.
Any way to get my user name changed by a site mod or tech person? Would really help me out.

Holler at me and let me know... private message or whatever.

Thanks for your time y'all.

Unfortunately, I believe the ability to change user names no longer exists, unless there has been a recent update. In the past we could do this, but apparently no longer.
I believe the solution these days is just start a new profile, but you have to check with the admins before you start a new profile. They will see this and tell you what to do.

Yes, I was originally 'fandango' back in 2005, but changed to my name 'Jared' in 2008, around the same time a few other members did similar... I think it was shortly afterwards that the function was removed.

I am ok with the function being removed for us to do it, I am assuming however that there has to be a way for a site admin/tech/moderator to be able to change it manually for us. Hoping this is the case.

Any PA authority figures please chime in and help out your boy.

I have changed usernames years and years ago, but that function is not now available to us. Even if I could change the overall settings for such functions, I would not do so without talking to the owner of this site first. M@X is the site owner, and he would be the one to make the request. You can try PMing him, but try not to be disappointed if you don't get a reply TBH, as he is rarely involved with the forum: https://www.progarchives.com/forum/pm_new_message_form.asp?name=M%40X" rel="nofollow - CLICK

Although you registered here many years ago, considering that you do not have reviews that I see or many points, I suggest registering with a new name. Then I could close this one.

This kind of sucks, if you think about it. Theoretically, users are pretty much forced to live with their "dead names" on PA after potentially coming out or being religiously born again et al., you know?

One should realise that what you put on the internet is often cached, copied and stays out there. While it is generally discouraged, there are some cases where deleting old accounts altogether is warranted (and hiding certain content). Doesn't mean it isn't cached somewhere.

I'm disappointed that I lost my early internet presence since various sites were closed down. I think my earlier writing was far more creative, better and more satisfying to me than anything I have written since. I guess the most egregious thing I did was troll the Queer As Folks forum.

There's a difference however between your old cached posts under your legacy name being accessible and your current posts under your old name that's either a deadname or simply not relevant anymore. ;)

Just realised I've been here so long that I remember fandango!

I wonder why Matx disabled that feature in the first place.

I don't know that he did disable it, or that it was the software default that came with a forum upgrade.

I know, it's frightening, isn't it?

^ I don't mean my username, but that I have changed other people's upon request long ago here. That said, while I never changed my username for this account, I did have one before this that I did not use much (I was a regular lurker here going back to 2004). I might have just been here as a Guest user, otherwise probably some variation on the word Funk or maybe some reference to Black Adder or Zardoz.

I certainly remember fandango too.

I asked because there was a guy on here, Gdub in the very early days who was also a Greg (who 'disappeared' around 2006) and when you said you'd changed your username, I was just wondering whether you were one and the same.. obviously not...

With religious Maani, he would try to "straighten" him out. Some of his views would not fly today, well in much of modern society generally. Some very politically incorrect stuff from those days. And Tony R's early alter-ego with the TY fighter, what a different place this was. Peter's colourful posts. Things do seem so tame now by comparison.

They might seem tame, until you start getting into political discussion. Haha!

^ True. Actually, often things were a lot less hostile despite being more rowdy back then. People seemed more comfortable teasing each other, blowing off some steam now and then, and there was a lot more laughter and fun it seems. The old days of this forum felt more like a party (and not political party). And in a way more people were comfortable with bashing, although a few would regularly take offence, as long as it was bashing Dream Theater, at least. ;) Every (okay not all) forum needs some dogs to kick.
