Wow, some super sweet choices for me here that really are amongst the best of the best of the best per my tastes. Lots I love.
Area - Caution Radiation Area (my favourite album from one of my favourite bands) Pierrot Lunaire - Pierrot Lunaire (my favourite album from one of my favourite bands) Perigeo - Genealogia (one of my very faves)
And Sensations' Fix - Portable Madness, Premiata Forneria Marconi - La Isola di Niente (I prefer this to Per un Amico), Le Orme - Contrappunti (my first band love in PA, adore this album, and "Maggio" is magnificent. Tilt is great...
It does come down to Area and Pierrot Lunaire ultimately. I will go with Pierrot Lunaire as it gets less attention than Area, although I am fairly rare in that being my favourite Area album.
What an amazing year for Italy. And because Morricone remains the man, here's a shout out to one of my favourite soundtracks of his from 1974: Il sorriso del grande tentatore. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kM7OvklcAn4" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kM7OvklcAn4

I'll make it my Mission to do an Ennio Morricone Movie Music Maestro tribute blog one day, although it could take me awhile as there's more than a Fistful of albums to get through, with well over 500 soundtracks to listen to at the last count.

Love all these ten underneath. Incredible amount of incredible albums. One more vote for Tilt. An album that I loved the first time heard it. Yet that love has kept growing with each listen over the years.

I have more Morricone albums than from anyone else (Magma second methinks) and to me that Mission might seem even more of a penury than Rodrigo's (as played by De Niro) penance. Metaphorically speaking, God knows I have many sins to atone for, but over 500 albums? It wouldn't really be hell for me exactly so much as purgatory. The vast majority of Morricone I love is from the 60s and 70s, but of course he has lots of other wonderful music. SO many wonderful albums by so many artists to listen to, such a finite time (unless there is a heaven and I can access Spotify, youtube, bandcamp and my music collection etc.). Heaven without wi-fi is another word for hell, or at least some might think so.

I guess we're too early for Goblin, and Banco skipped that year.
I went with PFM, though those two above are essentially the same album, so we're having to split votes.

We're too early for Locanda Delle Fate too. They'll be along in 1977.
1974 is the second best Italian prog year for me (after 1972), marking the debut album by Antonius Rex.

Lots of great choices here but Area stands a mile above the rest in my opinion.

Quella Vecchia Locanda's Il Tempio Della Gioia is a favorite of mine. PFM's L'Isola di Niente would be my second choice. I saw her get up and out of a phone book.

A lot of great albums, again.
I'll vote Le Orme, above QVL, Alusa Fallax and Biglietto per L'inferno.

I went with PFM's L'isola Di Niente". This was actually lent to me by a customer of mine when I had a business back in the 00's. I always had Prog playing in the store and this man was into it, and brought me this in to listen to. It was actually the first non english record I had ever heard. I didn't even want to play it which is pretty funny looking back on, but I wanted to tell him I at least listened to it and man, blown away by the mellotron, vocals etc. So a sentimental pick.

Sadly, this is a much easier year to chose from, because there aren't nearly as many likely candidates, as Area (read my review for CRA ) & Batiato's albums are not good.
I'm left with:
Arti e Mestieri - Tilt
Pierrot Lunaire - Pierrot Lunaire
Ouella Vechia Locanda - Il Tempo della
Giola
Perigeo - Genealogia

I was looking for a new challenge after cataloguing all of Tangerine Dream's 191 albums, not to mention the hundreds of solo albums by the individual members of Tangerine Dream. I've tried to listen to all of Ennio Morricone's albums in the past when I worked as an editor on YouTube Episodes & Music but only made it about a quarter of the way through his vast discography. Anyway, as you say, there's an infinite variety of artists and albums to listen to online these days with only a finite amount of time to listen to them all, but if there is such a thing as heaven, then Heaven is a Place on Earth, right here, right now.
