Elephant Gym is a Taiwanese math rock band that started in February 2012. The band is made up of siblings KT Chang (bass) and Tell Chang (guitar), as well as drummer Chia-Chin Tu. The phrase "elephant" represents their bass-driven melodies, while "gym" refers to their nimble and odd rhythms.

KT and Tell Chang were classically trained as children, while Chia-chin Tu studied percussion. After meeting Tu in a high school music club, the siblings created Elephant Gym in February 2012, hand-produced a limited edition EP, and toured Taiwan with their single "Ordinary Route" (later featured on their album Angle). Balance, the band's debut EP, was released on May 8, 2013, and includes the song "Ocean in the Night," which was developed in conjunction with Hong-shen Hong, the main singer of indie band Touming Magazine. They worked with Yoga Lin on a song called "Speaking in Tongues" in 2014, which they performed with him in Hung Hom, Hong Kong, and at the Taipei Arena.

"Angle," their debut album, was released in June 2014, with tracks featuring Panai Kusui and Enno Cheng. In December 2014, the members of the group announced a year-long hiatus and conducted a concert named "See You Then," as well as a short documentary of the same name.

"Angle" was released in Japan in August 2016, and the band was invited to perform at the Summer Sonic Festival. In October 2016, the band released their second EP, Work, which was followed by a small-venue tour across Taiwan. The group was invited to Tokyo in June 2017 to perform with American math rock band The Fall of Troy. In 2018, the Elephant Gym performed at the Megaport Music Festival located in southern Taiwan.

They released their second full-length album, "Underwater," in November 2018, followed by a world tour. The band performed at the ArcTanGent Festival in August 2019. On October 18, 2019, Elephant Gym released "Gaze at Blue," a single.
They announced the release of their latest studio album, "World," in December 2023.

Is this being picked up or stalled? If the bio is the problem I could give it a try to write something less wiki, because I think this band definitely has its place here on PA...

Kaohsiung, a Taiwan-based math rock group, Elephant Gym, was established in February 2012. Chia-Chin Tu, the drummer, and siblings KT Chang (bass) and Tell Chang (guitar) make up the ensemble. The band's name symbolises their bass-driven melodies and agile, irregular rhythms. Elephant Gym was formed in February 2012 after the siblings met Tu at a music club in high school. They released their first EP, "Balance," on May 8, 2013. Their first full-length album, "Angle," released in 2014, showcased their technical musicianship with complex time signatures and instrumental dexterity. However, they have since evolved beyond the confines of math rock by embracing various genres to express different emotions.

Their third album, "Dreams," released in 2023, demonstrates their emotive approach to music that sets them apart from common criticisms of math rock being cold or clinical. A joyful and expressive artistic voice has emerged thanks to Chia-chin's unostentatious precision, Tell's captivating guitar riffs, and KT's flowing basslines.

Throughout their career, Elephant Gym has sought to challenge themselves through collaboration. They have worked with artists like Panai Kusui and Sowut to break down their musical world and explore new territories in sound. These experiences have taught them the importance of understanding other cultures before collaborating effectively.

"World" features four collaborations with artists such as breakout neo-soul artist 9m88 ("Shadow") and folk singer Lin Sheng Xiang ("Dream of You"). The album showcases a collection of languages spoken by the people of Taiwan. Additionally, Elephant Gym paid homage to Japanese post-rock band Toe by sampling their song "Two Moons" on the track "Go Through the Night."

Elephant Gym’s music serves not only as a vehicle for their own imaginations but also for new songwriting ideas and styles inherited from collaborators. These partnerships have reciprocated energy in new ways for the band members. For instance, 9m88 was eager to experiment with unusual time signatures for "Shadow," while Lin Sheng Xiang adapted his performance style for “Dream of You” to play live with the band. These collaborations have been gratifying experiences for Elephant Gym.

In addition to their technical skill and innovative approach to rhythm and instrumentation, Elephant Gym's music also possesses emotional depth. While instrumental, their compositions convey a wide range of emotions, from introspective melancholy to exuberant joy. The band has a knack for creating evocative musical landscapes that resonate with listeners on an emotional level, transcending language barriers and cultural differences.

^ Oh, good, that saves me time. Thanks.

Edit: Dreams was released in 2022, though, Works in 2023. I would also mention the jazz and chamber rock influences that enriched their music after their hiatus (because of mandatory military service), moving away from the more typical math rock, and I would mention their full names: Tif Chang Kai-ting (KT), Tell Chang Kai-hsiang, Tu Chia-Chin... (and they also add piano, keyboards, flute, sound effects on several of their albums).

Interesting that one of Svetty's alter-egos is providing a bio for another Svetty alter-ego suggestion.  LOL

If you know more than the common PA member can know, speak out, but, honestly, this kind of reactions is taking away all of my will to contribute something constructive to these forums and archives. So I think I will refrain from any suggestion or other kind of contribution to these "archives". Thank you.

I appreciate people who can contribute these things. I had thought about suggesting Elephant Gym for at least 6 years when they only had an EP and album out. I first caught this wonderful live performance of Finger recorded in what appears to be someone's house.

Elephant Gym are Cleared for addition. If someone could step up to the plate and write a non-AI, non-plagiarised biography, the Post/Math team would greatly appreciate it.
