King Charles III once described the proposed modern extension to the National Gallery in London's Trafalgar Square as "looking like a monstrous carbuncle on the face of a much-loved friend." He also went on to say, "at least when the Luftwaffe knocked down our buildings, they didn't replace them with anything more offensive than rubble." Tongue

The Royal National Theatre on London's South Bank gets my "monstrous carbuncle" vote, as it looks more like a nuclear power station than London's grand theatre. Thumbs Down

Royal National Theatre, London:- Artist's impression....

Artist's impression of the architect.....

It would look better with trees. Or mounds of ironing boards.

The Multi storey car park in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear (made famous in the 1971 film 'Get Carter' starring Michael Caine).

Now demolished. Smile
Gateshead might be getting a new multi-storey car park - but how could we forget the old one? - Chronicle Live

It even had a restaurant. LOL

I guess it looks better from the inside. Tongue

That multi-storey car park looks awful on so many levels. It reminds me of the abandoned buildings in the nuclear wasteland of Pripyat - a town right next door to Chernobyl nuclear power station, and where the only remaining public transport are the dodgem cars at the derelict fairground. Smile

A fun day out for the family in Pripyat

The Orbit Tower in London - which somewhat resembles a crazy helter-skelter built of scrap metal - was constructed to commemorate the 2012 London Olympics and was actually nominated for the Monstrous Carbuncle Cup! Shocked

Derwent Tower Flats in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear (now demolished). Known locally as 'The Rocket'. This towered over the Newcastle/Gateshead skyline for 40 years. LOL

^ That's funny, because my first thought was the towerblock resembles a rocket, and I expect it came as a blessed relief to nearby residents of Gateshead/Newcastle when "The Rocket" was finally blasted into oblivion. Smile

As Lloyd Grossman used to say in every episode of Through the Keyhole, I wonder who lives in a place like this!??

And even worse, the building appears to have been built out in the open countryside in the middle of nowhere, which makes it even more of an eyesore, and it's apparently defying gravity too. If I tried to reconstruct that building using Lego bricks, it would more than likely collapse under its own weight. Tongue

Oh My Cod! Whatever next? Cute or cod-awful? This full-scale building may look a bit fishy, but it's actually the headquarters of the National Fisheries Board in Hyderabad, India. Visitors to Hyderabad may shout "Holy Mackerel" when they see this monstrous fish for the first time, but I'm sure local residents bream with pride, especially when the fishy edifice is lit up at night with shimmering blue lights, which makes it appear as if the fish is swimming. Geek

It's just as well you don't work for the Gateshead Tourist Board. I drove north all the way up to Gateshead once, but it was closed for renovation. Tongue

That's what I thought too. It's actually really neat looking. It makes me want to surround it with statues of pickles. The only problem is it doesn't seem to fit well with its surroundings. Having said that, I imagine over time buildings that are unique like this become an expensive maintenance problem as the structural parts probably need to be specially made by the one or two people on the whole planet that know how to make them.

I'm guessing the local residents must have been in a pickle too after having a giant silver gherkin built on their doorstep. Tongue

The poor residents of Gateshead have had it tough. This statue is just across the road from the demolished multi storey car park.  LOL

^ Is it the Buddha of Suburbia? I must admit, Gateshead is one of the last places I'd expect to find a giant Buddhist statue blocking the pavement. Tongue
