Inspired by SOTs Alphabet of Prog... Rules: we're starting with the letter A so I would like each of you to... 1) List all bands and artists (if surname begins with the letter) for which you own a handful of albums that begin with the letter A. 2) Give your pick for your favorite album or the one that strikes a chord with you more than the others. *please give an explanation for why you picked the album you did, and also include the album cover for the newbies to track down!* I don't have any prog vinyl  so this will be very difficult for me, but I am really looking forward to your picks so I can check as many of them out and learn new bands! Stage is yours - throw it out there don't hesitate.....!!

Great pick Frets! I know only Tales and Robot and have to say I slightly prefer the latter because of the high points being some of their best work! I would like to know what draws you to Tales above I Robot and Card??

It's darker, proggier, and the production is well done (as it is n all the bands albums) The Raven might be my favorite song by the group. Great record all around. I'm also a fan of classic literature, so it being all Edgar Allen Poe relayed doesn't hurt either ------------- The Wheel of Time Turns, and Ages come and pass. I'd suggest that you first safely get into Pyramids before going to Cards. I view it a bit as I Robot's twin album, but apparently some don't rate it that high. There are some disco-ish tracks, but you find that in Robot as well. Tales is a little too Symph-weenie for me. ================= Atomic Rooster In Hearing Of Made In England Atomic Roooster. .

Noted, Sean! Atomic Rooster - that one totally escaped me for some reason  but its gotta be no doubt... Why? A: Proggy hammond-driven hard rock with emotionally striking melodies and chord progressions! Band is at the top of their game here! The debut sees good seeds planted w C. Palmer obv but unfocused in places; In Hearing is them being heavy Styx before there was a Styx, while hammering out a great Side A! But for the life of me can those vocals grate after several listens lol Oh and after that they dipped and I don't need to mention the rest... |

I'll mention the A band of which I have most albums, which are Art Zoyd (in fact I have more albums by AZ than by anyone else, more than 30 at least if I count their boxset as the number of albums in there). Nominating a favourite album is hard but if you want to have a taste of avantgarde darkness, try Berlin (which is probably more accessible than some others I'd have in mind, even though some may find that hard to believe listening to it  ). This "video" shows the cover and plays a "song"... |

I envy you! Prog in physical format (vinyl esp.) always feels like a treasure! Ange: boy it's been a while, but I only heard ADDD and remember appreciating the lush symphonic elements in part reminding me of the homeland of Prog (the UK). Foreign vocals can be hit or miss but they really add to the music on this one. Obligatory Artwork.....  |

Since nobody has mentioned them yet, I'm throwing in my vote for Ambrosia. Their first two records are stellar. If pushed against the wall, I would pick "Somewhere I've Never Travelled." However, their first self-titled record is way more prog.

Angra The best album IMO is Holy Land because it's more original, progressive, filled with memorable melodies... than other albums (and most power metal).

I'll be a PIA and nominate ALICE COOPER!! They were certainly innovative, and progressive in their use of orchestration, instrumentation and unique lyrics. For album, I'll select "Killer." This song is amazing. One of the earliest rock recordings using a Mini Moog. “Halo of Flies” was, according to Cooper’s liner notes in the compilation The Definitive Alice Cooper, an attempt by the band to prove that they could perform King Crimson-like progressive rock suites, and was supposedly about a SMERSH-like organisation. ------------- I am not a Robot, I'm a FREE MAN!! |

Yeah, Babies is a classic! I love it to death!! I was a HUGE AC fan in high-school in the USA, and hung out with a very talent band of young guys who played AC note-for-note. This LP gets on my nerves and I can't place my finger on it  for the life of me Euro Dance/Glitter electronics sound terribly dated and annoying.To me, Argent fall into that Proto-like sound the Moodies, Procol, Nice, Family, Purple, Early Heep, etc were doing.

Just wondering but have people forgotten about All Traps On Earth? Anglagard are getting a lot of mentions but not their 'sister band'.
EDIT - having read the post I see that people are excluding them because there is only one album (so not a 'handful') . So the rules are that a band has to have at least x number of albums and that you own x at least?

The intent of this thread is to mention bands with at least a selection of albums under their belt, and preferably to pick the one you enjoy most from your collection. It's important to remember that these kinds of topics become subjective and loosely followed because everyone's tastes and collections differ. I cannot fault anyone at this point bc it's a good exercise nonetheless.

Big fan of the Alan Parsons Project. My go to fav is I Robot. Other top tier albums of theirs are Tales of Mystery and Imagination, Turn of a Friendly Card, and Eye In The Sky. IMO they don't have any bad albums and none the I still won't occasionally listen to. As they went on the "progginess" of the albums decreased. |

Paul...you mentioned AStra ......both their lps are wonderful imho....melodic yet heavy space rock with both guitar and keys. I like Black Chord a bit better than Weirding.

I have both of Astra's albums on CD. They're cosmic! I was planning to do a Top 20 list originally, but there were just too many great artists beginning with the letter "A", so it became a Top 30 by default, when I could easily have added another ten artists and albums to make it a Top 40 list.
