Camel emerged from Guildford like a Mirage with the release of their first album in 1973. The band have since gone on to become as legendary as the flight of The Snow Goose, with its annual long migration from Canada to Mexico. Their fourth album was a concept album, released at a time when the concept album was King. When record buyers listened to the final track on the album, Lunar Sea (Lunacy), they may have thought they were experiencing a temporary bout of Moonmadness, as the song played on endlessly, in what's known as the "terminal groove" effect. Camel's next critically acclaimed album had their loyal fanbase performing Rain Dances of delight and they were Breathless with anticipation for the follow-up album. Who can forget the stark image of the crucified astronaut on the cover of I Can See Your House from Here, where he's metaphorically Nude and alone in the endless depths of space. The Single Factor determining his fate is whether there's a spacecraft waiting nearby to come to the rescue, or whether he's doomed to drift endlessly through space like a Stationary Traveller, when all of his hopes will be crushed like Dust and Dreams in a Harbour of Tears. Camel had a return to form in 1999 with the release of their Rajaz album, which gave A Nod and a Wink towards their classic 1970's albums. I'll second that. It's much better than my Camel songs list, which admittedly, was partly chosen with a mind to finding the relevant Live performances on YouTube.

I think for today I'll stick to the two bands starting with Ca for these threads. So here's Camel. A Live Record/Camel - Never Let Go (Live Record version) Mirage - Lady Fantasy (what makes this album great is really how good every single track is though, same with Moonmadness) The Snow Goose - Rhayader Moonmadness - Air Born Rain Dances - Tell Me Breathless - Echoes (I like that Summer Lightning already got a nomination though) I Can See Your House From Here - Ice A Single Factor - Heroes (I love this track, but if it were an albums list in the first pace, I'd pick other albums) Stationary Traveller - Missing A Nod and a Wink - A Nod and a Wink

Hi, Sad to see that most folks are kinda stuck on the early material by the band. NUDE is an excellent album as are others during that time, but somehow, compared to the earlier material, a bit more on the rock side, it makes CAMEL seem not as good, or enjoyable. As a whole, the "artist" is fantastic and deserves a lot of appreciation. I was, along with Guy Guden (Space Pirate Radio), one of the few that appreciated "The Snow Goose", that many folks at the time trashed senselessly, because they wanted to rock stuff that was on "Mirage". The rock stuff is nice, but not as outstanding as a lot of other work by the band. BTW, I bought this album, as an import at Moby Disk way back when, because the cover was far out! They took that out when it was released in America ... the shame ... total shame ... ------------- Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about!
