Artists used to make guest appearances on each other's albums throughout the 1970s!
What are your favorites? I'll start with Jon Anderson's vocals on "Prince Rupert Awakes," King Crimson "Lizard!"

Jon Anderson is the only reason I still listen to King Crimson's Lizard album, and here he is again making a guest appearance on Tangerine Dream's Legend soundtrack.

The thread creator wants guests on 70s albums. I don't know much about it, can't think of any that is important/relevant. Rick Wakeman helping out Black Sabbath in 1973?

Off the top of my head (in no particular order):
Clare Torry on "Great Gig in the Sky"
Darlene Love on Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter"
The Blind Boys of Alabama on Peter Gabriel' "Sky Blue"
Jon Anderson on 4Him's "The Only Thing I Need"
Bono with Clannad on "in a Lifetime"
Phil Collins on Phillip Bailey's "Easy Lover"
Eric Clapton on Stephen Bishop's Careless
Todd Rundgren's band backing Hall & Oates on the entire War Babies album
Weather Report (minus Joe Zawinul; with Jaco) on Joni Mitchell's Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, the whole album
Adrian Belew and Wiliiam S. Boroughs on Laurie Anderson's Mister Heartbreak
Robert Fripp (and other KC members) on The Roches' Keep on Doing
Michael Jackson on anyone else's album or song
Danny and Victoria Thompson on anyone else's album
Tony Levin on anyone else's album (but especially Al Di Meola's Scenario and Rosie Vela's Zazu)
So many guests on Kate Bush albums but especially David Gilmour, Danny Thompson, Eberhard Weber, and the Trio Bulgarka.
Elizabeth Fraser on Massive Attack's "Teardrop"
Iggy Pop on Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Risky"
All of Ryuichi Sakamoto's collaborations with both David Sylvian and Arto Lindsay
Elaine Di Falco's contributions to Francesco Zago's Yugen and Empty Days projects
Many guests performing on Arjen Anthony Lucassen's Ayreon and Star One albums
Clodagh Simonds' contributions to anything she touches--especially Mike Oldfield

Exactly! Wakeman also appeared on Bowie's "Space Oddity!"
This is a great article, lots of stuff I didn't know!
I first heard amazing fretless bassist Percy Jones on Eno's "Another Green World!" I had to go "Who the F is THAT???" (look at the lineup....Phil Collins!)

I don't think these were mentioned yet...
Mark Bolan in ELO's On the Third Day album.
Roy Harper on Pink Floyd's Have a Cigar.
Once you leave the 1970s, guest performers are rather more prevalent, particularly on avant prog albums, and later with projects like Ayreon. Some guests in recent years appear on several albums each year, like Steve Hackett and Marco Minnemann as good examples.

The late, great John Tout on Wishbone Ash's "Throw Down the Sword" (organ).
Keyboardist and songwriter, died on May 1, 2015 in London, England. John Tout is best known for his role in Renaissance between 1970 and 1980 and again from 2000 to 2002. Prior to joining Renaissance he was briefly a member of Wishbone Ash. He also was part of Renaissance drummer Terry Sullivan's band Renaissant which released one album in 2005.

Thanks! I believe that in the 1970s, record labels were more restrictive of where their signed artists could perform or record.
I guess one has to differentiate between "solo" projects and "band" projects. I was originally interested in guests artists on "band" projects, ie. Jon Anderson on "Prince Rupert Awakes."
Eno's albums were essentially solo projects, so nearly all artists appeared as guests.
Another favorite of mine is "Two Sides of Peter Banks!" His guests included Jan Akkerman, John Wetton, Phil Collins, Steve Hackett, and some of his Flash bandmates! I imagine they had a good party!

Colin Scot, Colin Scot (1971) – provided backing vocals on several tracks
That Colin Scot lp has a whole plethora of Prog greats guesting on it, some credited, some not. Including, Rick Wakeman, Jon Anderson, Robert Fripp, various members of VDGG, members of Brinsley Schwartz, Peter Gabriel, Jane Relf, Steve Gadd (Rare Bird), Phil Collins, Annie Haslam.. Pretty amazing list to support an otherwise pretty much unknown singer-songwriter.

An interesting guest appearance was Jimmy Jackson, an American keyboard player who played the bizarre "choir organ" on Amon Duul ii "Wolf City!" Jackson was apparently the only person alive who could play the choir-organ!
Lemmings did, however, introduce a couple of important new players to the group's complex sound tapestry: Alois Gromer (an old boyfriend of Renate's) on sitar, and an American ex-GI and jazz keyboard player called Jimmy Jackson, whose contribution to Lemmings and the three Amon Duul-related records that followed involved him playing an extraordinary church organ that would become a crucial component in defining the group's sound.
"It was a large, ancient Mellotron-type instrument that had been designed by some crazy instrument builder," Renate explains. "For every key on the keyboard he had made a tape of that note which had been sung by a real choir. It wasn't sampled or anything."
At the time Fricke lend his moog to Amon Düül II for ‘Wolf City’, it was possibly through this connection that Fricke discovered the ‘choir-organ’. As a guestplayer, Jimmy Jackson plays choir-organ and piano on ‘Wolf City’, an album recorded in july 1972. He plays choir organ on the following tracks: "Surrounded By The Stars", "Green-Bubble-Raincoated-Man", "Jail-House Frog" and "Deutsch Nepal".

This OP is well pleased with everyone's responses! Thanks!!
Bassist John Giblin just passed away, he guested on Jon Anderson's projects "Animation" and "Song of Seven."
Another interesting guest was former Humble Pie guitarist Clem Clempson, who appeared on Jon Anderson's
"Animation" album! I thought Clem's playing on this recording was excellent!!
– You mentioned Jon Lord, but there’s another Jon you played with: YES’ https://dmme.net/interviews/janderson" rel="nofollow - Jon Anderson . For me, it’s something completely different.
You know, I always had this kind of very raw taste in music, and I can enjoy applying my style to lots different styles of music. I just do what I do – you said earlier yourself that it’s very difficult to pinpoint any specific style or specific influence in my playing, and I worried about that sometimes during my career. I always admired people like Steve Marriott that were really focused on a particular style and just did what they wanted. They seemed to have the calling to do one particular thing, and I kind of envied it. I’ve always liked to learn different styles, so I’ve never had a problem with switching from playing with something more jazz-influenced to something like Jon Anderson.
– Did you get to play with Anderson through https://dmme.net/interviews/wallace" rel="nofollow - Ian Wallace who drummed for THE WARRIORS, where Jon was a singer, and much later with HUMBLE PIE?
No, my connection with Jon Anderson was Ronnie Leahy, the keyboard player in STONE THE CROWS, who’s been a very dear friend of mine since late Seventies – and that’s how I got to know Jack Bruce as well: Ronnie introduced me to Jack – they’re both from Glasgow and had worked together in the line-up which included Mick Taylor. Ronnie was a good friend of Jon Anderson’s and a godfather to one of Jon’s children.
Other guests included:· FEATURING GUEST MUSICIANS SIMON PHILLIPS, CLEM CLEMPSON, DAVID SANCIOUS, CHRIS RAINBOW, JACK BRUCE & DAVE LAWSON

One of Hackett's all time best solos, IMO. I remember listening to the album and have that "Is that Hackett?moment, followed by a "that ISHackett!". It's a goose-bump wave for me.
As far as 70s, I'd say Fripp's Frippertronics on Peter Gabriel's ("Car") album.

I was listening to that tonight and then moved onto Please Don't Touch, an album that I hadn't listened to for a while but thoroughly enjoyed mainly for the guest appearances. Steve Walsh, Ritchie Havens and even Randy Crawford of all people appear. I especially love Havens on How Can I? This could almost be a Beatles song, tremendous haunting melody and great vocals.

Peter Banks guested on the song "Hello" by Lionel Richie, his solo begins at 3:30. Very emotional, tasteful, not a note wasted.

The fabulous Clare Torry wailing for all she's worth (which amounted to a session fee of £30 at the time) on the closing song to Pink Floyd's epic Dark Side of the Moon album.

Sandy Denny on Zeppelin's "Battle of Evermore." The only outside vocalist ever to be on a Led Zep album.

I hadn't heard that since, well, the '80s! But, yeah, really nice solo.
