The year 1977, even coming after The Golden Age of Progressive Rock, still created some fine classic Prog, not least outside UK. My faves are:
Camel (UK) - Rain Dances (1977) Eloy (D) - Ocean (1977)
Fermáta (TCH) - Pieseň z Hôľ (1977)
Guruh Gipsy (Indonesia) - Guruh Gipsy (1977)
Heldon (F) - Heldon 6. Interface (1977)
Locanda delle Fate (I) - Forse le Lucciole non se Amano Piû (1977)
Pink Floyd (UK) - Animals (1977)
Pulsar (F) - Halloween (1977)
Sheshet (Israel) - Sheshet (1977) Jukka Tolonen (FIN) - A Passenger to Paramaribo (1977)
------------- quality over quantity, and all kind of PopcoRn almost beyond

Actually, we do encourage people to use the search (search all dates if using PA search) to see if the same topic (or similar enough) has been done before, and especially if it is unlocked then to respond to that instead of making a new topic. We discourage duplicates commonly. It helps keep the place more organised, we get to see what other posters who may not still be around thought, and those still here who posted can edit their old posts to show if it changed or can add that to the old topic. That said, I wasn't going to comment on just doing this the one time for one year, but if any more years were to be done, then please do search for the older topic and respond there. Cheers.

Sorry for this somewhat off topic question, but how exactly do you find this using the PA search? How can you specify "all dates"? I actually tried looking for 1977 but found a thread from 2005 and Paul's recent "prog line" but not the one I wanted to find, which I eventually only could nail down going back the pages in the Top 10s subforum, somewhat tediously. In my experience the forum search is a mess, but then I may not use it properly!?

When going to Search, you have to click on advanced search. Then Find Posts, click on Any Date from the dropdown.
If I were to look it up, then the fields I would use and ones to choose to limit results: Search by Keyword: 1977 Search Forum: Top 10s and lists Search in: Topic Subject Find Posts: Any Date Display Results As: Topics
Start Search
and Paul's is the second result.
EDIT: I was too slow as I was more detailed than necessary. I was going to mention that I have been asked to unlock old topic various times and am usually willing if not inflammatory ones. Many old topics auto-locked. SO just because a topic is locked like the one you want to start, often it can be good to PM me asking for it to be unlocked.

My list 2 years ago was this:
Luciano Cilio - Dialoghi del Presente Van der Graaf - The Quiet Zone/The Pleasure Dome Pink Floyd - Animals Supertramp - Even in the Quietest Moments Al di Meola - Elegant Gypsy
Skywhale - The World at Mind's End Yes - Going for The One Gentle Giant - Playing the Fool Ashra - Blackouts
Looking around, some more I really like are Moroccan Roll, UZ 1313, and, as I already have a live album in the list, Seconds Out and Gong Live etc., and Mirage if I'm in the right mood. Not so keen on Encore, Songs from the Wood, Ocean compared to other releases of these bands. I think I leave things as they are (maybe put the Gentle Giant live album a few ranks higher, given that this is the only GG album I'd ever list in top 10 of a year).

But even:
Pink Floyd - Animals Van der Graaf - The Quiet Zone/The Pleasure Dome Camel - Rain Dances Supertramp - Even in the Quietest Moments Yes - Going for The One
- And I have to write the review of Dialoghi del presente!
It was and advice of yours, Christian!

If you visit FM's page on this site, Black Noise is listed as a 1977-released album.
If you visit the Black Noise page on Wikipedia, it's listed as a 1978 release.
Why don't we just call it a December 31, 1977 masterpiece?

May be my no. 1 too. Amazing album. I thought about including it myself, as it's her "proggiest".

Fascinating year, isn't it? Rise of punk, first signs of the major UK bands starting to become complacent and/or lose their way a bit, but still so much incredibly progressive music bubbling to the surface.
Here's my list, in no particular order. Nothing that hasn't already been mentioned by this point.
- Circus - Movin' On
- Greaves, Blegvad and Herman - Kew. Rhone.
- Gentle Giant - Playing the Fool
- Jethro Tull - Songs from the Wood
- Happy the Man - Happy the Man
- Yes - Going for the One
- England - Garden Shed
- Island - Pictures
- Plat du Jour - Plat du Jour
- The Enid - Aerie Faerie Nonsense

I haven't done my 70's lists, I just felt it was too overwhelming at the time I did the other years but I will eventually I'm sure. So just going over some of the albums from that year I'll go with these although far from an official list because I know I will miss some. In no order... Rush- A Farewell To Kings Pink Floyd- Animals Supertramp- Even In The Quietest Moments Locanda Delle Fate- Forse Le... Heldon- Interface Archaia- s/t Plat Du Jour- s/t Al DiMeola- Elegant Gypsy Coma- Financial Tycoon Aera- Hand Und Fuss Anna Sjalv Tredje- Tussilago Fanfara Hermeto Pascoal- Slave Mass PSI- Horizonte Great year for Jazz and Electronic albums. Bennie Maupin's Slow Traffic To The Right, Jean-Luc Ponty's Enigmatic Ocean and Iceberg's Sentiments along with what I picked. Then Klaus Shulze's Mirage and many others in electronics.

I missed Epidaurus' Earthly Paradise as well, I need to spin this again I sure rated it high. I'll mention Island, Lard Free, Arco Iris, Smak, Shylock and Patrick Forgas as releasing strong records that year as well.

For what it's worth, it was a gnat's whisker away from making mine. I only discovered it comparatively recently and have heard it maybe three times at most, so it's possible if you asked me again in a few years it might have made its way up there.

Yeah, I just listened to it for the first time 3 days ago, after listening to it I would probably put over Citadel by Starcastle.
