Hello to all of you! Before I say what I have to say, I want to apologise in advance in case the forum rules prohibit bringing your own projects to any post. These words that I'll say are not meant to promote myself but to share a time-consuming work of researching and listening to progressive rock that I think many people here can benefit from (and that's why I'm bringing it here). For the last 3 years I have been completing a list of songs that are candidates for a top 100 list of the best progressive rock songs ever. Six months ago I decided to analyse them one by one to complete the project, and today I have uploaded from the 100th to the 91st to my Instagram page where I will be sharing it (@algoflotaenlalaguna). I don't want to paste a direct link here in case you consider it as spam or something similar. The purpose for which I worked on the list was diversity. I've noticed that almost every list on the internet leaves out so many countries and almost all of their songs are from the UK. It always seemed unfair to me, and one day I thought: I will work on making a fair list, which will also serve to give visibility to progressive rock from other countries that many people don't know about. So I think it might be useful for many to look at the recent release and keep an eye out for others. I give a brief review of each song. Each song I have deeply analyzed and examined taking into account components such as: -Structure -Development -Harmony -Lyrics (if any) -Instrumentation -Execution -Originality -Innovation -Construction -Composition (theory) And some more. It's something I've wanted to put together for a long time, and even though I did it largely for my Instagram page, I didn't want to stop sharing it with the users of the progressive rock page I frequent and enjoy using the most. Looking at a top 100-91 list without any context or the rest of the list, will always look somewhat random. I do love 98, 96 and 94... but I love a lot of music. Lists like this can be fun to look at, but also a little pointless. |

Looks great so far, not that I know a lot from the ones you posted, but The Grand Wazoo 100% deserve to be there. Incredible work from Zappa and his band. P.S. It would be great if you'll add the album's names of each song as well.

Number 100: The Raven That Refused To Sing by Steven Wilson Well this is one I already knew and it’s a beautiful song. Not the biggest fan of either Porcupine Tree or Mr. Wilson’s solo output, but this is a great song and is making me think I should re-listen to quite a bit of both! 97: 2112 - Rush Haven’t listened to this for many years but it sounded great today! I had this album as a teenage rock (but not prog, yet) fan, and it was one of the first songs to make me realise how amazing drumming can sound. Thanks for posting here. I just went through 91-100. I have an Amazon Music Unlimited subscription and each of the ten sons was available so I was able to put them all in one playlist. The Supersister and Haikara tracks were new to Mr. Good timing on your next ten. I will see if I can add then and listen as I do my meal prep for the week. |

Took me a while just to add the next 10 but found them. Modrý efekt was a challenge to find as they were listed as M efekt. Lots of long tracks with Oldfield's Ommadawn topping it off. Going to be over a few days though I have heard all but symphony X, Modrý efekt, and Invisible before, so could skip the others but it's been ages for the Fall of the House of Usher and Ommadawn. |

This is quite an ambitious project, Leroy! I'm rooting for you but I fear you have bitten off something far bigger than any human can possibly chew (much less digest)--especially since you've chosen to include the entire 65 years of progressive rock music!!! I began a similar project several years back (and occasionally drift back to it) in which I was trying to "objectively" rate all of prog's 9+ minute epics (at first just the "classic era" epics but eventually all of them). I even established a 10-category criteria list to rate them using qualities quite similar to your own. But, alas! the project turned out too overwhelming. Now, if you're including every song possible, I worry for your sanity! For example: are you including all of the multi-disc Colossus Magazine/Musea Records releases of the past 20 years? If not, you are surely biased against some of the greatest prog songs ever created. Also, are you going through the entire catalogues of Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Buckethead, Frank Zappa, Alio Die, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and the many, many other truly prolific prog artists? Hi, Drew! Nice to talk to you again. What motivated me to undertake the creation of this own list is my instagram page. I have over 40,000 followers, but not all of them are due to progressive rock. The vast majority have made the decision to follow the page because of the popular rock content from my country. I have thought that doing a job of this magnitude and such a gigantic commitment can introduce many people to this beautiful environment of the vast line of music. It does not pretend to be the best top ever created but a comforting and pertinent introduction to those who have not listened to progressive rock yet or to those who have little knowledge. Of course there is also the idea of bringing new songs even to people who know, in the rare case that they haven't heard them. Besides, it is a reality that so many songs will be unfairly left out - imagine all the progressive masterpieces that have been born! Everything is thought for the thousands of followers that I have, to whom life has not yet presented this music that we all marvel at. East Coast Racer is absolutely brilliant. Only The Underfall Yard tops ECR in the Big Big Train discography. They both rank very high in my all-time favorite tracks, no matter the genre. |

| at the risk of appearing to be an 'ELP fanboy' (well I am so there!) I wonder if anything by them is going to figure? My money is on Tarkus and Karn Evil 9 (all 3 parts??!) at some point but probably nothing else. Never quite understood why the music of this trio has got so downgraded (or lost) over the years. I mean they were not exactly a 2 track band. Remove the less glorious moments and there are at least half a dozen tracks that should be in a proper decent list of prog tracks. I could name them but hey ho.. |

I agree! Besides Tarkus and Karn Evil 9, Trilogy, Toccata and Take a Pebble would make my list with a few other tracks under serious consideration ( knife-Edge and Endless Enigma). |

When prog started to have a community on the internet in the 90s people slowly started to agree that ELP were bombastic, pretentious and overrated. So in a sense they became the one band that prog fans and the critics agreed about. Meanwhile older bands like Gentle Giant, Happy the Man, VDGG, Magma, and Camel to name just a few began to be seen as underrated and underappreciated by prog fans.

I think the problem here is that ELP's reach exceeded many other prog bands of the time. They appealed to a heavy rock audience as much as to a prog audience but you couldn't necessarily say that of Genesis for instance. I remember the Gentle Giant discussions well which always seemed odd as I knew very little about their music back in the day. I think the whole 'agreement' thing is dubious. It just depends who you ask. ELP were always too extrovert and had way too much fun to be considered seriously as Pink Floyd and Gentle Giant. However they were the only band that totally crossed music genres and embraced classic music , perhaps the other exception only being The Enid who don't seem to have the same depth of appreciation as Gentle Giant (not sure why) . Its complicated as always. We tend to forget that Prog fans are not the norm when it comes to a more general appreciation of rock music.

Not going to comment on every song from now on, as I continue to work through the list; just those I really enjoy and have not heard before. So, Visions by Haken is fantastic! As a Dream Theater fan I’m expecting a few of theirs to appear (hopefully!) but this is as good as anything DT have done for years. Clearly influenced by the prog metal legends, it will certainly have me reaching for the whole album at least. No, not everyone agreed regarding ELP. I'm just telling you how I remember it and how it seemed to be. Also, when more fans heard more stuff that they thought was better ELP took a back seat. They just didn't seem to age well with a lot of prog fans. You can say those things are dubious too but that's how I see it. The prog community does seem to be a bit snobbish at times when it comes to what they like. I remember recently when Carl Palmer took his "virtual" ELP out on the road a lot of prog fans on online forums had major issues with it and thought it was unethical etc. but the general audience seemed to really appreciate it and many fans went to see it. I suspect many were just rock fans who happened to like ELP and not "prog snobs." This is in line with your last comment because prog fans can seem much more elitist compared to the general rock audience.
