Part 2 of 3. Coming up next:- Top 12 Prog Debuts from the Modern Era 2000-2022

My Top 12 in alphabetical order:-

Abel Ganz - Gratuitous Flash (1984)
Andy Pickford - Replicant (1993)
Bekki Williams - Elysian Fields (1996)
Code Indigo - For Whom the Bell (1996)
Galahad - Nothing is Written (1991)
Geoff Downes & New Dance Orchestra - The Light Program (1987)
John Dyson - Evoluton (1989)
Marillion - Script for a Jester's Tear (1983)
Mostly Autumn - For All We Shared (1998)
Pallas - The Sentinel (1984)
Robert Fox - Asfafa: A Journey (1991)
Underground Zero - Never Reach the Stars (1985)

In light of some of the comments below, I should mention that you can choose ANY prog debuts  between the years 1980 & 1999  - they don't necessarily have to be Neo Prog. Wink

there is no neo-prog era, neo-prog is just a subgenre, a certain sound.

You say neo-prog and then have only 4 neo-prog albums in that list.

I don't even know what to post here.

I had to call it something and Neo Prog seemed to be the best choice. I couldn't call this thread "The Modern Era", as that's coming up next in Part 3 for the years 2000-2002. As you can see from my list, it doesn't necessarily have to be a list of Neo Prog debuts - just a list of 12 debut prog albums released between the years 1980 & 1999. Smile

Paul, you are probably best off, just including bands from the list at the bottom of our page... we will always have 'differences of opinion' about the inclusion or otherwise of certain bands, but it will give you a far more accurate picture of which bands are considered neo-prog...

To be honest, I wouldn't be able to name 12 favourite Neo Prog debuts, so I've included five Progressive Electronic artists in my list too. Smile

Paul, I must confess to being a little bemused... why do you start threads about genres you confess you know so little about? It would be a bit like me starting one on Krautrock... Ermm

Why not just concentrate on the genres you love and know something about? If you are interested in Neo, just read the threads started by others who love the genre and listen to some of their recommendations?

I'm not trying to be critical, I just don't understand your mode of operation...

I'm treating this as a Post-70's Pre-00's Prog Debut list. Paul uses Neo inaccurately for all prog that is not classic 70's era.

I understand what neo-prog era means. It is not about the neo-prog genre. Why is this confusing?

As it happens, I've been listening to Neo Prog - in the shape of Galahad -  practically non-stop for the last three days. They're an amazing band! Thumbs Up

Spock's Beard - The Light
Roine Stolt - The Flower King
IQ - Tales from the Lush Attic
Bacamarte - Depois do Fim
Kevin Gilbert - Thud
Pendragon - The Jewel
Solaris - Marsbéli krónikák
Pär Lindh Project - Gothic Impressions
Mr. Sirius - Barren Dream
Fish - Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors
Arena - Songs from the Lion's Cage
Jadis - More than Meets the Eye

Mike Keneally - Hat
Enchant - A Blueprint of the World
Liquid Tension Experiment - Liquid Tension Experiment
Marillion - Script for a Jester's Tear
Änglagård - Hybris

The Flower King by Roine Stolt is generally considered the first Flower Kings album. Marillion's debut would be higher but I don't like the production on it. Pendragon's debut had a similar problem but there is an excellent remaster of it.

It hasn't, but if I'd called the years 1980-1999 the "Modern Prog Era", then someone would no doubt object to that too, so I can't win either way. Tongue

I do wonder how Paul and Christi would get on if they met randomly in a real pub and not just this virtual one….😉☺️

We'd get along just as well as we do here, although we might disagree over what music to play on the pub jukebox. Tongue

Interference Sardines & Rouge Ciel are a bit similar to their Quebec pioneer of Miriodor. §which is why I grouped them in my list)
