Subject: Top 5 favorite artists (regardless of genre)

I'd like to figure out what PA's favorite band is with some degree of certainty. I have a feeling it's Genesis, but who knows, it could be someone else. Anyway please list your top 5 favorite artists in order of preference, and I'll try to keep track of who gets the most points. Your number 1 will get 5 points, number 2 will get 4, number 3 will get 3, number 4 will get 2, and number 5 will get 1. Easy!
Here's mine:
1. Queen
2. Rush
3. Muse
4. Genesis
5. David Bowie

As for the remaining four artists, it's impossible for me to say because I operate at the album level rather than the artist level. In other words, none of the criteria which I might use to choose favourite artists seem appropriate to me.

BANDS (not solo artists etc)
1. Emerson, Lake and Palmer
2. =

Rush
4. Big Big Train
5. Tangerine Dream
I would normally include Yes and Genesis but I seem to be listening to them less and less nowadays. For personal/emotional reasons I will always be an ELP fan and at their best they stomped over everyone even if they were horribly inconsistent.
Other bands I really care about:
VDGG - virtually the only band that gives me goose bumps anymore but I feel that too much of their music is samey.
Gentle Giant - a wonderful enigma and certainly the purest expression of what music (not just prog) is about but still coming to grips with them. The challenge is on!
King Crimson - I love and hate them equally. They are probably THE prog band for intellectuals and musos but I hate their 80's stuff and Fripp being a major pain in the bum doesn't help lol.
Porcupine Tree - I like a lot of their stuff but not quite enough to make my five

Hey, I just solidified my list recently, perfect timing!
Honorable mentions include: Gojira, Dream Theater, Alice In Chains, L7, Primus, Nevermore, Porcupine Tree, Voivod, Gentle Giant, Yes, X Japan, Ulver, Death, Cynic, Atheist, Soundgarden, The Smashing Pumpkins, Metallica, Megadeth, Vektor, and way too many others to count, lol

Apparently, lol. You can say right in the title of the thread "regardless of genre" and people will still assume you only want prog artists. Oh well, the top five overall will probably be all prog anyway, so it won't affect the final result, just my curiosity about what other kinds of music everyone else listens to!

Top 5 of any music genre? Tough one. As much as rock music in its various forms is my preferred type of music overall, my ultimate two favorite artists are a pair of old-time folk poets from France, George Brassens and Jean Ferrat (likely unknown by non-French-speaking ProgArchives members) followed by Genesis, The Beatles and tied in 5th place, King Crimson and Procol Harum (particularly the earlier phases of these bands).

since probably only very few know Mylène Farmer (though she is an absolute superstar in France) here 3 videos of her. the first is the intro to her 2000 tour which was wittily named "Mylènium Tour". the second is a very personal and emotionally extremely powerful song about the death of her father from that same tour. for those who don't speak French I chose a version with English subtitles; the translation leaves a lot to be desired but is accurate enough to give you an idea what the song is about. the 3rd one is one of her surreal ones with some violence in it too

Thanks so much, Jean, for the introduction to Mylène! I am LOVING her videos--especially of that 2000 concert/tour. Wow, would I have liked to have been there! Looks as powerful as a Cirque du soleil or Adiemus concert/performance! I love the way every single person in the huge audience knows every word of her songs--and sings at the top of their voices along with her! (Like a Anavitória concert!)

Number One is easy. Nothing comes close to my love for David Bowie.
1. David Bowie
The remaining four places? I’m really not sure there are any firm favourites that would indisputably sit there, and it really probably would change depending on time and place, and simply how I’m feeling. But if I go purely by those who I have kept returning to over the years, and who I still listen to often, I guess the following would have to fight it out:
Alice In Chains
Black Sabbath
Iron Maiden
King Crimson
Iggy Pop
Queen
Lou Reed
Tool
Neil Young
I guess that makes an unordered top ten? 🤷🏻♂️🤪

1. Steven Wilson
2. Neil Young
3. Todd Rundgren
4. Mike Oldfield
5. Beck (not the Jeff one)

Nice to see some love for Steven Wilson's guitar skills. He's incredibly talented in that regard, especially when it comes to his solo work

Yes! I don't see enough people talk about his playing. His solos on The Sky Moves Sideways are beyond amazing; you don't need to play a lot of notes in order to be good.

I did bands before so a list of solo artists this time
1. Vangelis
2. Mike Oldfield
3. Kate Bush
4. Natasha Khan (Bat for Lashes)
5. Steven Wilson
Top 3 are well out in front of anyone else in my book for creativity and longevity. Natasha Khan has produced 5 masterpeices in my view (3 of those received Mercury prize nominations) so I struggle to understand why she isn't talked about, I'd say 'more often' but actually just at all would be nice! Wilson is almost as good as her!!

Hard to choose for my top spot, but Floyd gets it for longevity, but The Doors were something else.. 1967 to 1971.
1. Pink Floyd
2. The Doors
3. Chicago (70s)
4. Led Zeppelin
5. The Who
and then a lot of prog.. some international.. less jazz. even less classical.
