Very much inspired by Paul's German personal top list, I've got this idea for an Italian top 12, and surely best with one album per band to give good possibility for as many bands as possible. I'm not very familiar with spaghetti prog, so I'll have to pass on this one, but it's good to know I inadvertently provided the inspiration for David's list. I've still got my hands full at the moment with my Krautrock and Dutch clog prog blogs, so it could be awhile before I dip my toes into Italian prog too. Addio per ora.

If you can get pasta certain language barrier, then the linguiniistics shouldn't be too much of an impediment to both listen to and understand the spaghetti. I was lucky to travel to Italy 5 times between 2013 - 2019, visiting a record store in Rome with my cousins (i think it was Laziale) i found a lot of material of classic and modern RPI. My cousins are fans of progresive rock, and specially of the material released by AltRock records and Mellow records, my first encounter with Accordo dei contrari was with the album AdC

There's much to like from the Italian prog scene. It's still a vibrant place for prog rock today. As you can see, I mixed it up with some more modern acts from the last 20 years or so. It's good to hear that opinion, but I must say, it has been difficult for me to find something post-70's I like - though not impossible. But then, I can say, it has been even more difficult for me regarding German post-70's albums.

Actually, I've planned a French one in a couple of days while a Japanese one was done not so long ago. I've seen it in "Top 10s and lists". And it sounds fine with your plans, I'll remember that. Edit: I could be tempted to make (maybe a smaller) Polish one as well.

PREMIATA FORNERIA MARCONI Per Un Amico (1972) (So compositionally rich with near-perfect contributions from each and every band member throughout.) 4. AREA Crac! (1975) * (I consider Area a Jazz-Rock Fusion band, not an RPI band--and this to be the best J-R Fusion album of all-time.)5. CERVELLO Melos (1973) (Incredibly adventurous/creative compositions! I have not yet compiled a list of my Italian prog ranking. For now I can only say this: I don't think there is a better album than Area's Arbeit Macht Frei. I consider it an absolute masterpiece of contemporary music, and it is not an album belonging to the tradition of Italian prog (melodic, symphonic), it belongs to jazz-rock and the avant-garde. Area have produced another true masterpiece, Maledetti (in addition to Caution Area and Crac, remarkable albums but in my opinion not great masterpieces). Area therefore is candidate for the best Italian prog group. After them I think there are Stormy Six who, with the albums L'Apprendista and Macchina Maccheronica, have produced two RIO masterpieces. Neither, however, touches the top of Arbeit Macht Frei. In third position I think there is Banco, with two masterpieces, the debut album and Darwin - and another great Lp Nato Libero. PFM, in my opinion an overrated group, boasts only a true masterpiece, Storia di un Minuto. For a friend it doesn't seem like a real masterpiece. Rosenbach Museum boasts a jewel like Zarathistra which, however, is not in my Top 10 as well as Le Orme boasts two small masterpieces, such as Collage and Felona and Sorona, but there are many better albums (IMMO) Perhaps, Balletto di Bronzo and Osanna are the best bands after Banco. But the albums by The Trip, Claudio Rocchi, Cervello, Pholas Dactylus, Perigeo, Battiato, Quella Vecchia Locanda, Picchio Dal Pozzo, Un Biglirtto per l'Inferno, Metamorfosi, Arti e Mestieri, Goblin, Maxophone must be evaluated well. Apoteosi thanks. Amazingly good ------------- All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock. |

Other albums I love are Darwin from Banco and Felona e Sorona from Le Orme. And some others that I do like a lot, and with some songs among my very favorite, but that have songs that I don't really remember much, like YS from Il Balleto di Bronzo and Zarathustra from Museo Rosenbach. Oh yeah, and I usually forget them for not being among the 70's classics, but Unreal City and Logos did some great albums recently. |

Hi, Again, I don't do albums, and I think I have not heard enough of the things listed. I'll make a decent effort to catch up! Banco del Mutuo Soccorso Le Orme Premiata Forneria Marconi Biglietto/Baffo Banfi Franco Battiato Goblin Sensation's Fix Osanna The saddest bit for me, was the mention of OSANNA in one other post. One of the bands that helped define this genre, and the band that PG copied when his group toured Italy with them, and they are still around, although (have to check) not quite as complete as they were then, or as theatrical. Their doing this, also helped ANGE do their thing, although theirs is more centered on Brecht and Brel in the early days, but both DEcamps never lost their theatricality in their music. I'm not sure about OSANNA's versions, as I am not as familiar with Italian Literature and the arts, other than a whole bunch of operas ... gads ... we should do a poll on that!
