You can have your point of view but it's easy enough to keep out so why disturb others?

You're right. I don't share your and Paul's obsession with ratings and rankings and when I see a ranking that I don't even "understand", my aversion against it only grows bigger. Sorry if a small touch of humour disturbed you. Well, no, I'm not even sorry about it but I won't bother you again here; I'll go play outside with JD.

Thank you very much for your explanation and decision, and you're quite right about my "obsession" and being touchy - and I don't share this kind of humor. Cheers

Top 5, 10 or something, all-time

Your subject not mine.
Life is too short get get your shorts in a knot over something so trivial.
There are lots of FUN people here. If you don't have a sense of humour...well I feel for you.
I won't apologize for trying to bring a smile to anyone's face.
I'll give you and your posts a wide birth.
Have a nice day.

^I appreciate the fun here, sometimes. But there is a laziness that some forum members only read the subject heading and not the OP. And that, for me, is irritating and quite often rude.

Well, I can disclose that the present state of this game is - beginning with the highest number of points assigned (which is not necessarily the best) - following:
P. Paul  -  602
Mirakaze  -  576
Cristi  -  526
Grumpy  -  264
JD  -  100 (for originality)
suitkees  -  50 (for originality)

Thank you, JD, for your explanation and good intentions.
We can have different points of view but I wished you knew some more about mine before apparently being so sure about what it is,
and knew some more about my person as a whole so you could communicate with me in a way which I could receive more positively.

I won't disclose it at this point of time as a part of the game is not knowing what it's all about, but find out gradually. I can disclose, though, I don't know it exactly myself but find out gradually, too.

Now, I've decided to join myself.
The choosing part was  very easy, just those I'm fond/very fond of, and the ranking was some easier than I expected, and exiting, too.
- I've never done it before, and I just use to think of the albums, I'm very fond of, as different.
Anyway, after a good try, here's my result, and the ranking might be partly random:

48 Genesis  (UK) :   Selling England By The Pound  (1973)   12,74 (4347 b.)

32 Caravan  (UK) :   In The Land Of Grey And Pink  (1971)   12,31 (1681 b.)

32 Comus  (UK) :   First Utterance  (1971)   12,30 (1687 b.)

42 The Mars Volta  (US) :   De-Loused In The Comatorium  (2003)   11,69 (5409 b.)

50 Pink Floyd  (UK) :   The Dark Side Of the Moon  (1973)   13,03 (14829 b.)

46 Frank Zappa  (US) :   Hot Rats  (1969)   12,69 (3960 b.)

50 King Crimson  (UK) :   In The Court Of The Crimson King  (1969)   13,02 (7891 b.

48 Yes  (UK) :   Close To The Edge  (1972)   12,87 (5157 b.)

46 Can  (D) :   Tago Mago  (1971)   12,60 (4180 b.)

44 Miles Davis  (US) :   Bitches Brew  (1970)   12,63 (3550 b.)

48 Tool  (US) :   Lateralus  (2001)   12,11 (6665 b.)

That is 11 albums and gives in total 666 Angry points (no cheating, I swear!).

I'll explain my pointsgiving later, and you can check it all.

And we're still waiting for possibly more players.

Very good to see you here, Nogbad, as you might already know, and maybe better than you think.
Anyway, 11 albums and a total score of 640 points.

And this thread starts to look quite promising.

Here are my top five, maybe Radiohead too could be in the fifth position.

40 Robert Wyatt (UK) :   Rock Bottom (1974)   12,42 (2109 b.)
32 Comus (UK) :   First Utterance (1971)   12,30 (1687 b.)
46 Can (D) :   Tago Mago (1971)   12,60 (4180 b.)
38 Van Der Graaf Generator (UK) :   Pawn Hearts (1971)   12,49 (1908 b.)
44 Miles Davis (US) :   Bitches Brew (1970)   12,63 (3550 b.)

Those first four especially rank as some of my most essential albums. Love Miles Davis, but I am more of a Big Fun and Get Up With It guy.

I have never been one for rating and/or ranking. So all I’ve done is retained the order you posted them, and selected my favourite ten or something from there,

I agree with Paul that a game needs no purpose. It’s the fun of taking part. I have no idea of the purpose of this game, or even if there is a purpose, but I guess I’ve taken part. I wouldn’t say I, having fun yet, but that’s often the case when you try a new game, and haven’t quite worked out how it goes yet….

Ten or something, unranked:

50 Radiohead  (UK) :   Kid A  (2000)   12,51 (12122 b.)

50 King Crimson  (UK) :   In The Court Of The Crimson King  (1969)   13,02 (7891 b.

48 Tool  (US) :   Lateralus  (2001)   12,11 (6665 b.)

46 Can  (D) :   Tago Mago  (1971)   12,60 (4180 b.)

44 Opeth  (S) :   Blackwater Park  (2001)   12,27 (4589 b.)

44 Miles Davis  (US) :   Bitches Brew  (1970)   12,63 (3550 b.)

42 The Mars Volta  (US) :   De-Loused In The Comatorium  (2003)   11,69 (5409 b.)

38 Van Der Graaf Generator  (UK) :   Pawn Hearts  (1971)   12,49 (1908 b.)

36 Camel  (UK) :   Mirage  (1974)   12,35 (1927 b.)

32 Comus  (UK) :   First Utterance  (1971)   12,30 (1687 b.)

Whatever you say, but it's just about your personal taste and nothing else. No adding to any calculation and certainly no research.
So, are you sure? It would be good here with another 5-6 albums person.

I won't say it's just for fun but it's about personal taste, and maybe something about the "objective" rating lists where you might have a good, critical contribution.
So I've in fact been thinking that it could be good to have you here - not least if you only can choose a small number of albums from the list.

Yeah, I’m not sure what JD is getting at. The Just For Fun section doesn’t seem at all the right place for this, and where it is, does. Perhaps JD is just showing his sense of humour again?

For sure, all of the PA polls and lists are Just For Fun. 😄

Wow!, an amazing number of 15 albums, Lewian. Now, we're really getting somewhere, and having a statistician can be very good, as well, I guess.
You get 916 points and are absolutely at the top of our result list now, but whether it's very good, we don't know yet.

Seriously Guys? You don't get my meaning?
And let's be clear, it makes no mind to me, but this is more than just making top 10 lists or whatever. It's a game..David said so. So yes, I think it would be better suited for the Just For Fun forum. Plus, I think David may get more of the participation he's looking for because people who like to have fun and play games are there.
That's all I was suggesting.

Fair enough, but I definitely disagree. A lot of forum members pay absolutely no attention to the Just For Fun section. They get their fun instead from the polls and lists sections, which are still mostly much related to the prog music they know and enjoy. The Just For Fun section, on the other hand, is rarely about that prog music.

And, given you don’t know how this game is going to progress, I would say you are being premature to suggest already that it belongs in the Just For Fun section. It seems completely appropriate to me, just where it is.

I doubt if I would've noticed this album listing game if it had been misplaced in Just for Fun. You can include me amongst the members who don't pay much attention to the non-prog Just for Fun section, as I get much more fun and enjoyment out of taking part in the daily PA polls and lists, just like this one. Thumbs Up

This is not JUST for fun. This is a prog thingy!!! Hahah, just kidding. Kinda your type of reaction. Wink

I agree with Nick.

I once created a thread entitled "The First Prog Lyrics That Pop Into Your Mind" and the admins moved it to the JfF section. I wouldn't do such a thing if I were an admin, but not a big deal. These are trivial matters for me.

I'm sorry to hear that you haven't had fun, yet, but not to plan everything in advance is supposed to be a part of having fun, and in this kind forum event it's difficult to forecast what will happen - and I don't find it so important.
The total result will very much depend as well of everybody's contribution.

Okay, this thread is more turbulent than I imagined, but we're still surely getting somewhere and the present state is this:
Lewian  -  916
David  -  666 Evil Smile
Nogbad  -  640
P. Paul  -  602
Nick  -  600
Mirakaze  -  576
Cristi  -  526
Grumpy  -  264
JD  -  100 (for originality)
suitkees  -  50 (for originality)

And as you can see, it still gives some good meaning for me to count JD and suitkees with us - even I reckon it's a bit controversial.

Meanwhile, I can tell that I'm very fond only of these:
Museo Rosenbach - Zarathustra (1973)
Solaris - Marsbéli Krónikák (1984)

So, if it's about your personal taste, I think, I surely can conclude that it's very different from mine.
Then, I don't think, I would have done something like your post here, so the differences between us two are maybe bigger than that.

Ok, I'll play nice. Let's see how this adds to my already 'moderate' score.
I assume if I don't think they are worthy of a 'Very High' rating or if I haven't heard the album, I simply leave them off my list.
Let the games begin !

48 Genesis  (UK) :   Selling England By The Pound  (1973)   12,74 (4347 b.)
48 Yes  (UK) :   Close To The Edge  (1972)   12,87 (5157 b.)
44 Jethro Tull  (UK) :   Thick As A Brick  (1972)   12,75 (3399 b.)
50 King Crimson  (UK) :   In The Court Of The Crimson King  (1969)   13,02 (7891 b.
50 Pink Floyd  (UK) :   The Dark Side Of the Moon  (1973)   13,03 (14829 b.)
42 Rush  (CAN) :   Moving Pictures  (1981)   12,30 (3864 b.)
40 Dream Theater  (US) :   Images And Words  (1992)   11,82 (4306 b.)
42 Porcupine Tree  (UK) :   In Absentia  (2002)   12,01 (4250 b.)
44 Miles Davis  (US) :   Bitches Brew  (1970)   12,63 (3550 b.)
32 Caravan  (UK) :   In The Land Of Grey And Pink  (1971)   12,31 (1681 b.)

As it wasn't specified in the original post how many albums you can choose to list, doesn't that give an unfair advantage  in points to someone who chooses to list 20 albums instead of 5 or 10 albums, or am I taking this game too seriously? Tongue

Good to hear, JD! There might still be a good hope for the two of us.
Your high score here suprises me, but yes, we can get some wrong opinions pretty quick.
You get 664 points for the albums you have chosen.

As it wasn't specified in the original post how many albums you can choose to list, doesn't that give an unfair advantage  in points to someone who chooses to list 20 albums instead of 5 or 10 albums, or am I taking this game too seriously? Tongue

I think, we are enough players now for the second phase, but it better be tomorrow.
So, just take a rest.

The OP says:
"please, choose all the albums you would rate very high"
isn't that clear enough?

Except at the end it may come out that you win with the lowest number of points, or if you precisely hit 666...
I don't feel much of an advantage for being listed at the top, but anyway, it was fine to make the list.

Your high score here suprises me, but yes, we can get some wrong opinions pretty quick.
You get 664 points for the albums you have chosen.
Plus my 100 points for creativity, giving me a score of 764 (second place)?

1-) 38 Van Der Graaf Generator  (UK) :   Pawn Hearts  (1971)   12,49 (1908 b.)
2-)
48 Yes  (UK) :   Close To The Edge  (1972)   12,87 (5157 b.)
3-)
32 Marillion  (UK) :   Misplaced Childhood  (1985)   12,06 (1849 b.)

My criterion: Quality over quantity. And a "top 3" is the most "classy" top of all tops. Mark my words, David from Denmark. Star
