My top ten favorite prog albums of all-time are:
1. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway—Genesis
2. Mëkanïk Dëstruktïw Kömmandöh—Magma
3. Limiti all'egualianza della parte con il tutto––Homunculus Res
4. Dots and Loops—Stereolab
5. Shiny Eyed Babies––Bent Knee
6. Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter—Joni Mitchell
7. Pieces of a Man - Gil Scott-Heron
8. Jan Akkerman—Jan Akkerman
9. Salinity Now! - Unaka Prong
10. Tiny Dynamine/Echoes on A Shallow Bay—Cocteau Twins

Just in case  you don't want to count Dots and Loops, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, Pieces of a Man, or the two Cocteau Twins EPs that were released on vinyl a week apart in the fall of 1985 before being released together on a single CD, there are these:
11. Gentle Stream—The Amazing
12. Adventures in Utopia—Todd Rundgren’s Utopia
13. Novella—Renaissance

If you're looking for a top ten list of prog albums that I think are essential it'd look something like this:

Inner Mounting Flame by Mahavishnu Orchestra
Moving Waves by Focus
Fragile by Yes
Foxtrot by Genesis

Nursery Chryme Genesis
Octopus GG
Red KC
A Passion Play Jethro Tull
A farewell to Kings Rush.
Hemispheres Rush

My top ten is a work in progress.

Surely, Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant and PFM are not present.

EL&P, Camel and Rush are very far from my top 10.

Actually, if I chose only one album for an artist, I would find:

- VdGG (one of the trilogy)
- Wyatt: Rock Bottom
- Hammill (Chameleon or Silent Corner)
- King Crimson (In The Court or Red)
- Area: Arbeit Mach Frei
- Talk Talk: Spirit Of Eden

For the other places, Pink Floyd, Soft Machine, Henry Cow, Universe Zero, Art Zoyd, Magma and others bands are on the run.

If I considered even the Beatleas, and The Doors, I'd put Abbey Road and The Doors I on my list.

Agree. But since this is a recurring topic, you can post another list in six months. Wink
Personally, I'm not very much a fan of lists or rankings, and mine can be different tomorrow, but I'll play the game and give it a try (one album per band, in no particular order and counting beyond 3 becomes difficult for me...):

Focus - 3
Ange - Guet-apens
ELP - Brain Salad Surgery
Marillion - Script for a Jester's Tear

Stashed away on my computer I have a list of prog albums for beginners(intro to prog). That is only six albums so I'll just add a few after that.

Pink Floyd-Wish you were here (I suspect most already own Dark side of the moon;if not then go get it asap).
Emerson, Lake and Palmer(ELP)- Brain salad surgery
King Crimson- In the court of the Crimson King
Genesis- Selling England by the Pound
Yes-Close to the Edge
Jethro Tull-Thick as a Brick

Ozric Tentacles - Jurassic Shift
Camel - Snowgoose
Marillion - Misplaced Childhood (although clutching at straws is probably my personal favorite by them)
Steven Wilson - Hand. Cannot. Erase

Another ten that are just bubbling under (some could have made the top ten but I didn't want to repeat bands):

Genesis - A Trick of the Tail
Yes - Relayer
Jon Anderson - Olias of Sunhillow
Marillion - Clutching at Straws
ELP - Same
King Crimson - Larks Tongues in Aspic
Gentle Giant - Octopus
Rush - Hemispheres
Rush - Permanent Waves
Alan Parsons Project - Irobot

This list (or lists) is not perfect and I'm sure I'm leaving out some that I might think of and even some that are better than some of the ones listed here. If I were to do this tomorrow the list could be different although many(if not most) would still be on here.

I'll do a mixed list. My main area of expertise is prog metal but I'll try to include albums from various sub-genres and time periods.

In no particular order:

1-) Genesis - Foxtrot
2-) Yes - Close to the Edge
3-) Beyond Twilight - For the Love of Art and the Making
4-) Marillion - Misplaced Childhood
5-) Return to Forever - Romantic Warrior
6-) Symphony X - V: The New Mythology Suite
7-) Dream Theater - Awake
8-) Gryphon - Red Queen to the Gryphon Three
9-) Wobbler - Rites at Dawn
10-) IQ - Dark Matter

Sorry Saga & VDGG. I love you, but...

40 minutes of the quality of Echoes would have competed for my number 1 spot with very good chances. The same thought experiment with Gates of Delirium would have brought it close to top 10 if probably just not into it. Top 20 for sure.

Top 10... I don't know. I'll just throw some of the ones that come to my mind first, though I might miss some others.
Wish you were Here and Animals from Pink Floyd. CttE and Fragile from Yes. Myths and Legends of King Arthur (some combination of the original and the new re-recording) and 6 Wives from Rick Wakeman. Ommadawn from Mike Oldfield (and perhaps also Tubular Bells and Hergest Ridge). Hamburger Concerto from Focus. Almost Selling England by the Pound (if it weren't for Battle of Epping Forest). IV from Led Zeppelin. The Division Bell from Pink Floyd. Hybris from Anglagard. Secret of the Runes from Therion. Mother Earth from Within Temptation. Reflections from Apocalyptica. Immaginaerum from Night Wish. Train of Thought from Dream Theater (and disc one from 6 degrees of inner turbulence). The Whirlwind from Transatlantic. The Raven from Steven Wilson.

I thought about this when I compiled the list. All the Marillion albums I listen to these days whether they be Fish albums or Hogarth albums are all live albums. I can't think of one studio album they've done that is anywhere as good as the supplement live album that follows the studio album. Even the original Script album which I love is bettered by any of the bootleg live albums the band put out at the time.

Wow, a few people have BBT's folklore on their list. I just played it the other day and can't really get into it that much. Is it one of those grower albums? I like the overall sound and style but it just hasn't grabbed me yet I guess. I remember the first few times I heard Marillion's clutching at straws it didn't do much for me either but it really grew on me to the point where it became one of my all time favorite albums.

for me it's their most balanced album. Probably not as immediate as the English Electric albums but I enjoy the eclectic approach while Transit Of Venus Across The Sun has now become probably my favourite track by them.

Dark Side of the Moon
Close to the Edge
Thick as a Brick
Selling England by the Pound
In the Court of the Crimson King
Tarkus
Days of Future Passed
Leftoverture
Pawn Hearts
Misplaced Childhood

Could have added Relayer, Wish You Were Here, Animals or Foxtrot but prefered not to repeat bands when in doubt. Also not sure DOFP is really prog yet, but as a seminal album I included it, and I couldn't decide a 10th album, too many came to mind LOL

EDIT: Damn, I forgot Mike Oldfield's Ommadawn. I love Oldfield but he never comes to mind when I think of prog. Same as Popol Vuh. They're artists I love but they don't always seem to be considered part of the genre. They're usually considered New Age/World Music, etc.
