The long-anticipated continuation! I may find myself hard-pressed to find 10 prog albums I like from every single year from here on out, but this particular year thankfully posed no challenge for me:

1. Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel 3 (Melt)
2. Bruford - Gradually Going Tornado
3. Herbie Hancock - Mr. Hands
4. Brand X - Do They Hurt?
5. Genesis - Duke
6. Zamla Mammaz Manna - Familjesprickor
7. Aksak Maboul - Un Peu De L'Âme Des Bandits
8. Yes - Drama
9. Present - Triskaďdékaphobie
10. Robert Fripp - God Save The Queen / Under Heavy Manners

Honourable mentions in no specific order:
* Cardiac Arrest - The Obvious Identity
* Decibel - El Poeta Del Ruido
* Den Za Den - Den Za Den
* Gentle Giant - Civilian
* Rascal Reporters - We're God
* Steve Hackett - Defector
* Tony Williams - Play Or Die

What are your favourite prog albums from the first twelve months of the genre's most controversial decade?

I actually have no idea what prog really is, so I'm very formalist on this: Is on PA > I will list it; is not on PA > I won't list it, unless it's Irmin Schmidt who should be on PA.

The album itself, and many of Stevie's albums from the 70s were very progressive, synthesizing many different genres and styles. Besides, 1980 was a point in time where many alleged prog rock bands were regurgitating the same old crap. Regurgitating the same old crap is not progressive.

Not a great year for prog with Permanent Waves as the standout album in this niche. Some decent albums by Yes, PG, Genesis, APP and Kate Bush ... That's it, folks. The best album of the year in my book is Rainy Sundays ... Windy Dreams by Andy Irvine.

Interesting end note. I feel the same way--that's why Boy is my #1 album of the year. I, however, remember thinking (and feeling), the first time I heard the album, start to finish, that these were the heirs to Pink Floyd! So, shouldn't that alone qualify them as prog! And then their work with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois?

Memento by SBB is probably my favorite '80 album right now. Also, recently I've been listening to Hazard by Predmestije (Slovenia) a lot, which is great but it's more of a jazz fusion than a prog record.
