Topic: Interactive Duos Poll: Heaven-Sent and Hell-BentPosted By: Logan
Subject: Interactive Duos Poll: Heaven-Sent and Hell-Bent
Date Posted: June 08 2021 at 09:31
Interactive Poll # Holy 3 - 666: Heaven-Sent and Hell-Bent: A "heaven" and "hell" "duos" poll (these can be out of or included in PA)
"In Heaven Everything is fine You got your good thing And I've got mine" (Ivers / Lynch - "In Heaven")
"I'm living in a hell hole Don't want to stay in this hell hole Don't want to die in this hell hole Girl, get me out of this hell hole" (Spinal Tap - "Hell Hole")
Are you on a stairway to heaven AND on a highway to hell? Are you both heaven-sent and hell-bent?
Welcome to the latest installment in this interactive poll series. With this theme we travel to the promised neverland (harp music anyone?) and plunge into the abyss (bagpipes anyone?). The heaven and hell theme can be taken very literally, such as songs specifically about heaven and hell and songs that reference heaven and hell, but it can also be about music that thematically has a heavenly and hellish relation to you -- ones that are evocative of heaven and hell or just speak of paradise and are infernal in some way to you. I'm pretty open here. So, in case this is unclear, it doesn't literally have to be about heaven or hell or reference something heaven or hell related, it just has to evoke something of those qualities for you. I'll be interested to see what musical associations people make to the heaven and hell theme.
This is a duos poll, so it is expected that you include at least one Heaven theme and one Hell theme.
I am partially inspired by two sequential episodes of Doctor Who called "Heaven Sent" (fantastic episode) and "Hell Bent" as well as Art Zoyd's Le mariage du ciel et de l'enfer. For those not familiar with the expressions, heaven-sent refers to something good that happens at an opportune time; whereas, hell-bent denotes dogged determination at all cost. Title aside, it's best just to think of this as "Heaven and Hell".
My original conception was to do this as another duos poll (one heaven and one hell entry per participant), but I felt that that would be too onerous on some, especially when considering recent increased participation in these polls. That said, considering how others feel, I am making this a duos poll. I doubt that this will be as lively in terms of the number of participants, but who the heck knows? I also considered purgatory as an option before -- a "limbo" dancing theme for another time perhaps.
This topic comes in two main stages. First there is the suggestions and nominations round, and then comes the voting round when the nominations have been listed in the poll. Each stage generally lasts about a week, meaning two weeks total. After that we're onto the next Interactive Poll, although these polls might still show some activity after two weeks.
Here are the guidelines/ requests for participation in the "suggestions/ nominations" round (the first half of the process) which will last for one week (I would make it a little longer, but this might make it easier for people to remember and be prepared).
1. For the suggestions in the nomination round, feel free to mention up to four choices of music for potential nomination (more if you really want to). ;) People must mention at least one heavenly piece AND one hellish piece to be considered for the nomination process. You can mention some others not to be officially considered for nomination along the way, say in discussion, but please try to make that clear. And if you think of preferable ones later in a timely-enough fashion, then that's fine and I will NOT ask you not to nominate that later mention if we have not yet entered the voting round even if you listed four officially already.
2. For your nomination/suggestion, please type the composers, bands, or artists names followed by the title of the music along with the videos -- preferably a youtube embed if possible, but if that is not possible, then provide a hyperlink to where we can hear the music (say bandcamp). Adding the name of the artist plus the music title helps me to add it to the poll (copy-paste) and it makes it easier for others to find it in the thread. Also, sometimes videos don't work in certain regions, and this way we can see what to search for if your video isn't working for some of us. Please try to use the format in the following examples to make copy-paste and consistency easier for me: Spinal Tap - "Hell Hole" Belinda Carlisle - "Heaven Is a Place on Earth" Santa Claws with AC/DC - "Hell's Sleigh Bells".
3. Ideally, your first music post will be edited and updated to mention which of your two choices (one heaven and one hell) are your two specific nominations when you decide, and this should be done before June 15th. If you only mention one heaven and one hell then this won't be an issue. This step makes it less likely that I will make mistakes or be unsure of your choice, but hopefully others will be double-checking as these topics are sort of team-efforts and we all make mistakes (yes, also in heaven). At least to try to specify your two nominations within a week.
4. On Tuesday, June 15th I will add the nominated music entries. I will give warning, but I would like all final decisions to be made before then if possible. If no choices have been specified, then I will add your first hell mention and your first heaven mention as your nominations, so consider trying to pick what is best for you as your first if you think you might not get the chance to specify your choices for nomination. Come Tuesday morning (June 15th), expect me to be hell-bent on putting together the poll with your choices even if some have not got around to specifying their nominations (I might do it later, but be prepared for Tuesday morning PST). I like to stay on schedule and likely will have to plan my time as they take time to put together.
Note: comments on other people's choices in the meantime are much appreciated but not required, this can help people to make up their minds on what to nominate.
On to the voting period details (do not vote for any poll option before Tuesday, June 15th, which is when I will paste the music nominations (Artist - Song) in the poll):
1. When I have entered the nominated music choices into the poll, then the voting phase will be open.
2. Before voting, please ensure that you have tried to listen to all of the poll entries. Hopefully there will be a playlist to listen to those (I should make a new youtube account just in case Geo isn't available to create the playlist).
3. Vote for three of the options, no less and no more, but do not vote for your own choices (I figure by nominating those you've already voted for them in a sense).
4. List those choices in a post.
Note: you can mention songs if you don't plan to fully participate in the process, but please make it clear if you do not plan to be listening to other people's choices and voting for three options and listing those choices in a post. I would like to limit the poll spaces to those who plan to take part in the nomination, listening and voting process. If things come up and you can't in a timely manner, or ever, well, things happen. That we listen to each others music and indicate so is the most important part of this exercise to me.
Like with suggestions, comments on other people's nominations are appreciated, but not required. Acknowledging those that do take/find the time to comment would be appreciated, I expect. And please remember, no voting before the appointed time.
To summarise or reiterate important guidelines points:
1. Mention up to four choices* (Artist - Track) on the heaven/heavenly AND hell/hellish theme. Artist - Track text for each should be written in the post, and youtube videos embedded (we can help if any don't yet know how to do this) or at least links (hyperlinks preferably) to the music if youtube is not available or you can't embed youtube videos. *You can mention more, but more than four per post can be a problem. So the four is not a set rule. 2. Within seven days of this topic starting, nominate one heaven and one hell choice (please try your best to do this before June 15th). 3. On Tuesday, June 15, I will list all of the nominated music in the poll (expect early PST time, although it may come later). 4. When music nominations are up in the poll, it is an expectation that the other nominated choices will be listened to. 5. After listening to all of the choices, vote for three poll options (in other words, three options with three duos) not your own and mention those in a post.
Again, feel free to mention music not for nominating or potential nomination, just please try to make that clear. Not everyone may wish to take part in the whole process that wants to mention music. If it is not specified by a poster that mentions music, then I will expect that you plan to nominate two (heaven and hell), listen to all the nominees and vote for three poll options (duos) and mention those in a post when the time comes. It does take a level of commitment, but I understand that life can get in the way sometimes and sometimes the best laid plans come to naught.
There's a fine line between pleasure and pain, heavenly and hellish listening to each other's music choices!
I'll start with a quite well-known infernal piece, which I've seen described as devastating and of course is in reference to a devastating incident. This piece was also used very well in a quite experimental and amazing episode ("Part Eight") of Twin Peaks: The Return -- three of my four choices have a Lynch relation as I have been quite obsessed:
Krzysztof Penderecki - "Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima"
Switching moods, this is just heavenly to me (also may be too well-known; I got to know it and love it first from watching the film The Hunger, a vampire film which features David Bowie, Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon and was in my top five favourite films when I was a teenager especially):
Léo Delibes - "The Flower Duet (Lakmé)"
For more "hellish" music (has a Twin Peaks connection -- I used another Xiu Xiu track from this album in an earlier Interactive poll and I used this track in one of my own non-interactive polls at one time soon after discovering the album):
Xiu Xiu - "Blue Frank / Pink Room"
I mentioned "In Heaven" in another poll (and Threnody... methinks), but this is the song I think of with the word "heaven". Bauhaus did an interesting cover, as did Pixies and Tuxedomoon. And the Cardiacs song "A Time For Rejoicing" references it. It's from the Lynch film Eraserhead.
Peter Ivers / David Lynch - "In Heaven (Lady in the Radiator Song)"
One might argue that it's also quite hellish, or at least unsettling in its way, especially when considering the whole film it's from, and it's one that I cannot not mention.
An additional note, if by some heaven-sent circumstance this poll is graced with more than 25 options, the extras will be combined with others low down on the list. So if there are 26, then that will share a spot with 25, and if there are 27, then option 24 also will have two options. If the titles are long, I might have to rethink the order if this more than 25 scenario occurs. I generally like to order these in the order that people mention music (before the playlists this could be particularly helpful). Again, please no voting before its time (we'll be watching). If only the names of the submitters are up, and not the names of the music, then it is not yet time. Sorry for such a long OP. If anything is unclear, feel free to ask.
---------------------------------
So the poll is now up, just a number of hours earlier than I expected, but I'll be very busy later on today. Please listen, vote for three duos, then mention those in a post. Thanks to all who participated. I hope its been a little more of a heavenly than hellish experience. ;)[

Nice poll idea! A pity though that you didn't stick to the duo-poll formula; the theme lends itself perfectly to it (but I can imagine that for some it might become too time consuming...). Will think about some suggestions...
In the mean time, your Xiu Xiu video doesn't work for me. I found this one, in the hope it will work for everyone:

^ Yes, 'tis a shame about scrapping this as a duos theme as that was the conception behind this. If others are amenable, I would happily change to it being duos poll as I do much prefer that. I do hope everyone will at least try to list a heaven and a hell piece. Shame about the Xiu Xiu, that video you posted is unavailable for me.
I don't expect as many nominations this round because the suggestions/ nominations round will only last one week and I ask those not committed to the whole process not to nominate (though they can still mention music, but should indicate that if not planning to listen to everyone's nominations and vote in a post).

I've always thought "Halleluhwah" and "Aumgn" from Can's Tago Mago were the perfect aural representations of, respectively, ascending into heaven and descending down into hell, but since those are ineligible (and would probably be too long anyway for a poll like this) I'll see if I can think of some better selections.
Posted By: Logan
Date Posted: June 08 2021 at 11:06
Yeah, plenty of Prog selections that would be great for this. Aside from the duos aspect, I struggled with whether I should allow music included in Prog Archives. If people want that, I'll change it. At this stage it's easy enough to make changes, and I'm hardly hell-bent on that.
Feel free to mention others included in PA, just not for official nomination I think works (best indicated then in case it's obscure, unlike Can), or as said, I can change that.
Yes, we have heaven, indeedy doodle.

Including songs that are on PA would make this easier for me. When I first saw the poll title, the only songs I could think of were in the thrash metal genre - enough to make Nickie run away screaming into the night !

Then we shall include ones in PA. Thanks for the feedback.

these are hard...

^ Yep, makes it more challenging (especially when it comes to the listening, and for commenting, which makes it more time-intensive). I doubt we'll nearly a get a full-house this time in terms of nominations as this requires more commitment.
EDIT: By the way, while I had originally conceived of this as a duos poll, and then opted to make it just one heaven or hell piece to be nominated (while hopefully mentioning one of each) because I felt it likely would be too onerous on some, then changed it to duos after posting this based on comments (was always my preference), I am now hell-bent on this being a duos poll. I just hope that doesn't limit participation from various of the regulars. I hope those still at least mention music even if they choose not to nominate music due to time constraints.

I have to think about this, but maybe I can come up with something.
The first song I came to think of was Talking Heads' "Heaven", but I guess most people know it already, so I am not going to submit it anyway.

It's a pretty wide and open topic since it doesn't literally have to reference heaven or hell, but you can draw your own associations.
As to that song, I had to look it up to remember it. One of the first to come to mind was Clapton's Tears in Heaven. I think three of my four choices may be on the possibly too well-known side, but even if quite a few people here know them, I still don't not want to mention those. I probably will mention a few more over the following days even if four is suggested as a guideline. There are lots I would like to mention on the heavenly or hellish side of things (mostly hellish to be honest).

Took me a while to decide whether to go with direct references to heaven/hell, using those words? Or? Anyway, decided to go with not precisely, necessarily. I will have four total.
Note to Logan: I will format the titles the way you requested when making my final selection.
First one up is Atilio Adrian Matteucci (aka Athy) & Jesse Ahmann, from their Edgar Allan Poe Suite, "To One In Paradise." Raff and Cristi will be happy to know there is actually some thrash harp music herein.
For contrast, here is Azam Ali (who I've brought here before, as well as Athy, but both of these are very different from what I've presented in the past), performing Hildegard Von Bingen's, "O Vis Aeternitatis."
Third and fourth are also in contrast to one another, one is funny and the other, kind of a hell on earth, especially with the video (not for those who fear fire).
Martin Mull's "They Never Met"
and Jackson C. Frank's "Dialogue"

^ I like to leave things quite open to individual interpretation (within some reasonable parameters). I wouldn't approach it that way (and you can hear how I approached it with my choices). If that is evocative of heaven and hell for you, then it could. I trust your intelligence and thoughtfulness when it comes to what you think are suitable choices for the poll following what I wrote here, and the kinds of things that you would want in such a poll from others if you made this poll. I try to think of the audience when I suggest things and what the OP would appreciate for the theme. If you have to ask (lacking confidence), then you might be overthinking it or going too far out of the box. I kind of think the music should speak for itself, and be easily understood in the context of the themes. My last topic was yin and young as I recall (opposites), and I think that approach would have worked better for that.
>Do what you think is best for this topic, what you think others would appreciate, and that hopefully says something about you. I would choose music that I appreciate in both cases, even if it can be unpleasant in its way (like my choice of Threnody...).</span>
EDIT: I was thinking about this a bit more as it's an interesting question and it is on that came to mind as I conceptualised the OP. Masterpiece and bad are commonly subjective notions, one man's meat is another man's poison and all that, but I would say that if one is heavenly to you (i.e. sublime) and another is infernal in that it really torments you, then that could be a powerful duo. I think the average listener should get a visceral sense of heaven and hell through the listening if you do this kind of route. Not boring bad, but devastating (bad for the psyche and painful perhaps).
I look forward to see which approach you decide on. Bad can be good. I would suggest going for the kind of bad you may not like but still can appreciate on some level.

My absolute favourite music about Heaven and Hell is probably Ulver’s “Themes from William Blake’s The Marriage of Heaven and Hell”. I absolutely adore that album. I know a lot of people don’t, and consider it one of Ulver’s weaker albums, and I can acknowledge that it is obviously a transitional album, but I think a band in transition often comes up with really interesting results. Two of my favourite Anathema albums, for example, are transitional albums (Eternity and Distant Satellites).
I shall have to think about my choices for this poll. I think this is going to be a fun one. More work, for sure - but more rewarding, too. I love this idea, Greg! Thanks!

Not sure whether I have time to look for alternatives but here's one pair.
For heaven it's a friend and occasional music collaborator of mine who does some in my ears heavenly stuff at times. Idem - Suedirland Bantry Bay 2010 Filmmusik - actually that's not really a worthy title, he just names it after where he did the images. Anyway, his stuff is so peaceful! Also there's Jesus in it. 59 views up to now, I hope we can push that a bit.
For hell some truly hellish music by Ex-Einstuerzende Neubauten FM Einheit. It's called Korrektionsanstalt - correction institute. The German "Anstalt" has an actually more threatening vibe than "institute" really, and it evokes where the Nazis put people to "correct" them...

I don't have the time to comment on the choices now, but I had the chance to listen to all of them, and I'm really impressed with how people have tackled this. Great stuff! Thanks!
As for Martin Mull, that video is unavailable to me (both the embed and at youtube, it takes me to the right video). This TV spot is one I find.

This one works fine....funny with Mike Nesmith introducing them. I believe it's actually the same recording, just lip-synching for the tv show. Thanks for finding this, Logan, for others who may also encounter this difficulty.

Tuesdays are a good day for me to hang and listen to music, for some reason. So here is my first take on at least most (?) of Pages One and Two, thus far:
Logan:All
film music this time from you.Great
source(s).Krzysztof Penderecki - "Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima"Begins with a very ominous sort of swarming
sound.Discordance continues in this
orchestral piece, plenty of drama and suspense! The feeling of doom continues
throughout.Lots of slippy-slidyness in
strings and more swarm sounds as the piece nears it’s close.A crescendo at the end, and then to
fade.I know I would have seen that
episode, just don’t remember the music from it, but it is a slippery one to
find a grasp for memory, which could explain it.Certainly fits the “hell,” aspect, which
doesn’t mean I don’t like it. Léo Delibes - "The Flower Duet
(Lakmé)" This one I do know, and it
is lovely, indeed.Angelic female voices
swelling with orchestra beneath.Truly
heavenly. Also loved that film.Xiu Xiu - "Blue Frank / Pink
Room"Certainly starts with scary
screaming, the guitar comes blazing in, very wrongle-ly (not as in “wrong,”
just trying to describe the sound) with lotsa echo. There are muffled drums in it, with more
screams and indiscernable words being spoken, sound like a recording in a big,
empty warehouse.Peter Ivers / David
Lynch - "In Heaven (Lady in the Radiator Song)"This I do know from the film…pretty spooky
stuff in a very Lynch-ian way.A
girly-girly sing-song voice with organ underneath, sure I hope I don’t see
something like that when it’s my time to go to the other side!
Nick_h_nz:Nine Inch Nails “Run Like Hell”Ominous beginning (we’ll probably hear lots
of ominous on the hell-side of things in this poll).Love the atmospheric start.Strings and some very subdued bells?Or on keys?Or something.Anyway, also some quiet
clackety percussive sounds.Tension building,
as a guitar? comes wailing through, but still way, way back in the mix, with
the percussion increasing and whirring sounds join in…all sound is very back,
if that makes any sense, which adds to the sense of “what is happening here?
And why am I so spooked?”Bowed
instrument comes to the fore, kind of.The sounds begin to recede even more and the music comes to a gradual
end with a static-y sound, then, actually end abruptly.Teeth of the Sea “Whilst We Live in Fear of Hell”Rattly-whirlies start this piece out.Solo brass instrument languishes in, then
more join in, in discordancy. There is a
feeling of medieval-ness to me, in the sounds of the brass, like hearing it
through the echoes of time.Lush electric
guitar comes along, with equally lush keyboard underpinnings.Shimmers slice across the guitar. This piece is in no hurry, and it doesn’t
harm it in the least.Sound dies back,
then a beautiful, heart-tugging trumpet? emerges from the quiet, all the while
the guitar (with lots of echo added to it’s plinking) and keys continue on
their way. This was sublime to my ear,
and I don’t normally care much for brass. The piece shimmer to an end.The House of Capricorn “The Road to Hell is Marked”This wastes no time getting right to it, with
wailing guitar and pounding drums.Here’s
some heavy rock with even some growling, sort of punkish in intensity. Lots of
head-banging commences. Not a fan of the vocals, but I actually like the lead
guitar part. The Fire Theft “Heaven” Acoustic piano and male
vocalist.Soulful sound with a bit of
rasp to his voice.Full on guitars, bass
and drums kick in after a couple of verses. He’s a good yeller, too.I like
this, for a heavier piece, but not as much as a couple of the “hell,”
selections, so far.Nemo “Aux Portes du Paradis”Whang-y bass hits a few notes, then a sort of
shakuhachi flute and maybe harp?There
are also some sort of string-like effects on keys or guitar and some very
French-sounding reedy instruments….A guitar has some decidedly Frippian slidy
things going on.I very much like
this.Sometimes the shortest things have
an immense appeal.Sandbender “In
Heaven”This has some repetitive
guitar notes and some sliding string sounds, there is subdued percussion
underneath.Guitar comes even more to
the fore over something that sounds vaguely like it might be vocal, but might
also be strings or something else. The
percussion then moves more to the front, and the stringy thing becomes a tad
Oriental in feel….then it slips into something entirely different with keys,
then back to the guitar at the fore.Everything dies back for some washy keys and sparkly things.A spoken sort-of Indian vocal comes in (maybe
from a film, it sounds a bit like).Jordan Reyne “Heavenly Creatures”Sounds like maybe this will be an acoustic
one, we’ll see.This has a dark-folk
feel, something I very much enjoy. This
is very shivery, in a great way. There is a sense of enchantment
to it, with the breaths and the steady, steady bodhran (?) beat.
JD:Harry
Partch “Delusion of the Fury: Act I: Treats with Death and with Life Despite
Death: Emergence of the Spirit”I
remember seeing a documentary about Harry Partch back in the 70’s, so knew what
to expect.Intriguing guy.Lots of disconnected feeling here and chant-y
vocals.Sort of a March of the Neanderthals,
I’m thinking the vocal is “Death,” with it all being so slowed down since Death
has so much time at his command (or maybe it’s a March of the Ents?).Chris De Burgh “Spanish Train”Castanets and quiet guitar, with a spoken
vocal at the start. There are orchestral
touches, the vocalist moves from singing to speaking and back.Big Pig “Devil's Song”Rhythmic beginning, female sultry vocal, that moves into ferocity at
times.Male chorus behind her in
places.Sounds like they’d really be fun
to see live.Collective
Soul “Heaven's Already Here”I remember
this band, this is sort of ala JC Mellencamp in sound, sort of alt/rock/Americana.Acoustic sound for the most part.Nice vocals, clean production.Enjoyable song.Alice
Cooper “Hallowed Be My Name" This
one is known to me, vintage Alice.
Lewian:Idem “Suedirland Bantry Bay 2010 Filmmusik” Piano and some whirry thing, there is also
the sound of maybe people speaking, but not intelligibly so. An organ-y thing enters the soundscape, or a
concertina or the like. It is very
relaxing, not in a boring way. F. M. Einheit “Korrektionsanstalt” This one goes right to my eadrums after the
soothing previous piece, and with good reason, considering the subject
matter. Lots of percussive sounds and a
rising and falling whhhhhwwwwwwwaaaaa, with sounds of distantly blatting sheep,
groans, cries and shrieky things and the like.
Sort of a heartbeat, underwater
sound enters, along with some drippy sounds.
A menacing tone is heard for just a moment, then almost-bells and
distant, shrieky guitars and an almost purring sound, now with underground drip
sounds. I certainly do NOT want to go to
this place, but it makes for interesting listening.

Thanks Snicolette for the commentary.
I'm going to say a little about each of them including my own selections. Listened once carefully to most of these, this time I'm listening through again, and not very carefully with the ones that I'm repeat listening, with minimal comments (sorry that this does not compare better to Nickie's descriptions):
My choices:
Krzysztof Penderecki - "Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima": Penderecki composed this in 1960 for 52 string instruments and as one can gather by the title, this piece was dedicated to the memory of those killed by the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima in Japan -- a hellish event. This music was also used in Twin Peaks 2017 tv series return referencing a nuclear blast. It's a very serious and shocking I might say piece of music. Devastating is how one person described it who brought it to my attention over a decade ago. It's nice, I inappropriately responded.
Léo Delibes - "The Flower Duet (Lakmé)": As mentioned, I got into this because of the Vampire film The Hunger, which also got me more into Schubert, Bach, Bauhaus and others. This piece is a duet for soprano and mezzo-soprano, and is from the opera Lakmé, which premiered in Paris in 1883. I have found it achingly beautiful. It's quite heavenly in a rather ethereal way, yet also makes me feel quite sad.
Xiu Xiu - "Blue Frank / Pink Room": This is from Xiu Xiu's tribute album to Twin Peaks called Xiu Xiu Plays the Music of Twin Peaks. I don't recall that music from Twin Peaks, but the heavy, frenetic, noisy rock and sinister riffing gets me going.
Peter Ivers / David Lynch - "In Heaven (Lady in the Radiator Song)": A naive yet rather creepy heaven song scenario courtesy of Eraserhead.
--------------------------------------
Snicolette's choices:
Atlio Adrian Matteucci (aka Athy) & Jesse Ahmann - "To One In Paradise" (from their Edgar Allan Poe Suite): I really love this. I love the cello and electric harp? Very melancholic, profound, interesting changes in mood with a quite avant-garde aspect. I found it very moving. Sorry if my description is lacking, but it's a superb piece.
Azam Ali performing Hildegard Von Bingen's, "O Vis Aeternitatis": Beautiful and haunting. I find this to be a wonderful rendition.
Martin Mull - "They Never Met": Interesting change of pace; lots of fun. J
Jackson C. Frank's "Dialogue" - I Want to Be Alone: Love this melancholic piece, and find it very moving.
------------------------------------
Nick's choices:
Nine Inch Nails - Run Like Hell: I have truly enjoyed everything Ghosts that I have heard from NIN. I love the qualities of this, and there is a Lynchian feel to the music (I know they are acquaitned and have worked together).
Teeth of the Sea - Whilst We Live in Fear of Hell: Just wonderful. Love the post rock qualities, and i find it quite hypnotising in a way. Reminds me very much of something. I'm guessing this is based on the soundtrack from the horror film A Field of England?
The House of Capricorn - The Road to Hell is Marked: I am not generally that into death rock or black metal type things, but I liked that dark stoner and sludgy dark 'n heavy rock vibe of this. I genuinely enjoyed it.
------------------------------------------
JD's choices:
Harry Partch -Delusion of the Fury: Act I: Treats with Death and with Life Despite Death: Emergence of the Spirit: I think I've heard that before as I'm quite familiar with Parch. Odd, but I dig it, but then I dig odd.
Chris De Burgh - Spanish Train: Fully enjoyed that.
Big Pig - Devil's Song: Who wouldn't want to bonk a big pig? Also enjoyed that.
Collective Soul - Heaven's Already Here: I enjoyed this slice of Americana.
Alice Cooper - Hallowed Be My Name: The great Alice Cooper; love this song.
------------------------------------------------
Nick's choices (this time with heaven):
The Fire Theft - Heaven: Beautiful, very touching.
Nemo - Aux Portes du Paradis: If it's filler the fill me more. Really like it. Short but sweet, does leave me wanting more, and that's hardly a bad thing.
Sandbender - In Heaven: I enjoyed this too, and like the "ethno" qualities.
Jordan Reyne - Heavenly Creatures: When I saw the title I wonder if this was related to Peter Jackson's New Zealand film Heavenly Creatures (a film I liked very much with Kate Winslet and first saw in the mid 90s). I don't know if it was inspired by that, but I enjoyed it.
Idem - Suedirland Bantry Bay 2010 Filmmusik: I really love this so tranquil and lovely. When you said it has Jesus in it I worried that there might be a jump-Jesus scare in the video to shatter the serenity.
Ex-Einstuerzende Neubauten FM Einheit - Korrektionsanstalt: Unnerving...
Mila's choices (I think your choices are good thanks):
Elo Hi - Ofra Haza, Goran Bregović (The Entire Soul). I liked what I've heard of Ofra Haza before. I really appreciate this kind of ethnic music.
Shortparis - Страшно: very interesting, a modern Russian group with middle-eastern qualities. Quite hypnotic; could play this at a rave.
By the way, a trick to embedding videos that I use (there is also an insert movie option if that is enabled above your post) is to copy the unique identifier number/letter combo code after v= in the youtube video address and add [ tube] tags. Here's a heaven/hell duo from the same band. CMX are a Finnish band listed in the archives as progressive metal. It's not for me to say if it's the right place for them, but it certainly isn't the whole truth.
The first one is called "Taivaan lapset" which means "children of Heaven" and the other is "Epäonnisten liikemiesten Helvetti" which means "The Hell of unfortunate businessmen". These will most likely be my nominations, but I'll confirm that when it's time.
CMX - Taivaan lapset
CMX - Epäonnisten liikemiesten helvetti
Here's another hell-themed song. Haikara were a Finnish prog band who started in 1970s. "Manala" is a mythological underworld, place of the dead, or hell if you like. This is the closing track from their debut that's easily one of the best Finnish prog albums.

Thanks to Greg for expanding the poll's rules to include a much wider range of music than just songs with "heaven" or "hell" in the title. Yesterday, in spite of racking my brain, all I could come up (besides the usual suspects, such as Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Judas Priest) were Slayer's "South of Heaven" and Venom's "Welcome to Hell".
Here are my first two picks. I hope more will be forthcoming. My "heavenly" song does have "paradise" in the title, though it was chosen more for the quality of the music than because of words. The song is "Whispers of Paradise" by Anúna:
My "hellish" song, on the other hand, references an evil creature of fiction that may be even scarier than Satan - none other than Great Cthulhu (though with a simplified spelling). Here's Metallica's "The Call of Ktulu":

Again, some of my suggestions in previous polls could have fit here... I was thinking about Kreng, for example, and others, but here we go. A first couple of bands that you know already from me (for those who have followed these polls), and it's an odd couple - they're very far apart... But somehow the conclusion of the first song will need the second one... (I have to come up with some kind of argument, no?).
King Missile - Heaven:
Noir Désir - 666.667 Club:
A second couple is also an odd one, but in an other way: maybe heaven doesn't sound that jolly and hell not that dark...

In this song verse after verse we go deeper and deeper into pain, which reaches its climax when Marina Parente's opera singing arrives. In the final verse Lalli seems to sing the way out of pain, and the last words are We will save ourselves.
Under a glass of ice starsUnder a sun-squeezed wine pressAn overflow of light, blinding with snowOf black, of collapse, of mudToo much else to understandThe experience of painToo much to participate in anymoreThan with full eyes and heartToo much else to understandPain dimensionToo much more to suffer anymoreThan with full eyes and heartFor the most exhausted bodiesFor the beaten spiritsFor those marks on his faceFor those marks on the clothesToo high to acceptAny appeal to reasonDictatorship of life thatIt calls us to forgetUnder a glass of starsA collapse of blackA lazy ruin of smoke towersAbove an emptied floorOf sense and breathAn overflow of blinding black lightIn identical formsSame colorsPressed juicesWe will save ourselves.
2) HEAVEN:
Franco Battiato:L'ombra della Luce (The Shadow of Light), sung in Arabic language, live, Baghdad 1992
The lyrics of the song are inspired by the Tibetan Book of the Dead.
Rescue me from opposing forces,
night, asleep, when they are not conscious
when my path, it is uncertain
And never leave me
And never leave me on my own
Bring me in the highest areas
to one of your reign of peace:
It 's time to leave this cycle of lives.
And never leave me
And never leave me on my own
Why, the joys of the deepest affection
or lighter passages of the heart
are only a shadow of light,
Remember, as I am unhappy
Far from your laws;
how not to waste the time I left.
And never leave me
And never leave me on my own
Why, the peace that I felt in some monasteries,
or the vibrant understanding of all the senses in celebration,
are only the shadow of the light.

Thank you for your thoughtful commentary, Logan. It is indeed electric harp that Athy is playing. Jackson C. Frank also wrote "Blues Run The Game," which was a big cover tune in the 1960's folk club scene. Azam Ali, as you probably remember, I brought here before, she's kind of in her very own league, for me, always stretching her boundaries. Martin Mull, an old favourite for the humour in the piece....Plus! Bonus of heaven and hell being in the same song. I also toyed with pairing this with Kaleidoscope's version of "Oh Death," (for the mention of both in one tune) but then would have had to find another pairing for Jackson and I felt that perhaps 6 songs in one would be too many, for people's time allotment.
Great idea for a subject, I did have a lot of trouble coming up with things that I felt weren't too familiar. Another potential candidate was The Psychedelic Furs with "Heaven," though I thought that might be too known, which I try to avoid here.

Nickie, one of the first songs I thought of was the Psychedelic Furs' song. Also (nod to Raff), Slayer's South of Heaven. (Though the thrash song for hell was Megadeth's Go to Hell from the Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey soundtrack.) I also thought of the Brian Adams' hit, but not as something I wanted to share. Most of what I thought of was from the 80's and fairly well known. Love and Rockets had some success in the 80's, so some people might be familiar though the songs chosen weren't the ones that got radio play or released as singles.

A lot of metal songs fit in here, but I don't wanna annoy anyone...
Posted By: Logan

On the metal tracks front, that wouldn't annoy me, I like variety across the spectrum of selections by people, and with this theme I would expect that there is going to be music that annoys some people I could easily imagine my Xiu Xiu track choice annoying people, and the Penderecki could be very abrasive to some, I would think.
I prophesy disaster wrote:

Ideally you balance that with a hell and heaven track. Mention a heaven or hell one to go with it, or another that fits both themes, preferably that provides some contrast, I would say, but that's up to you.
I was partially inspired by this by Art Zoyd's music for a take on William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, and I have no issue with tracks that reference both. That said this is a duos track poll, so I would expect another track on the heaven or hell theme or both.
So everyone must mention two tracks, one that has a heavenly aspect, or one that mentions heaven and hell, and one that mentions hell... You get the permutations idea.
That's a scenario I thought of at one time and I probably should have specified in case this was seen to be a concern.

I might actually have submitted the Talking Heads song. What's interesting about it is, the way it depicts heaven, it sounds more like hell to me (nothing ever happens). Apart from that, it would probably be easier for me to find a hell related song, because with heaven we are entering a religious area, and I am not religious myself.
OK then. To hell with it. I'll submit it anyway. Here is Talking Heads - "Heaven":
And a "hell of a song". Kaizers Orchestra - "Ompa til du dør" (Oompah till you die)

Wednesday afternoon has given me some more listening time. Here are first takes on the rest of Page Two:
George:
Love and Rockets “Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven” Starts with humming and strumming. There are some wongly keyboards, the vocal is
kind of whispery. Saxophone (or maybe
done on keys) joins in, in a couple of spots, being played simply. Some nice keyboard embellishments come more
to the fore. Lyrically, they juxtapose “types,”
against one another, all who want to go to heaven. Music goes to the rear as the vocalist comes
to the fore and the song fades. Love and
Rockets “Bound for Hell” This is a much harder rocker, with a semi-spoken
vocal. Builds in intensity, then has
more of a bluesy feel with the addition of harmonica. Lyrically,
a train ride to hell, as the title suggests.
Mila-13:Ofra Haza “Heaven Kol haneshama
(The Entire Soul) ” Gorgeous voice, love
this kind of stuff. I know she was very popular
(and still may be) a while back, but I didn’t have resources at that time to do
as much listening as I do these days. Looks
like a gorgeous film as well. There is a
traditional oriental orchestra underneath, and a male chorus as well. Just
beautiful emotion in her voice. Shortparis “Hell” This also has a Middle Eastern feel,
which is something I love. There is a
steady percussive beat and a very discordant guitar that comes in, not as crazy
about the guitar, but the vocal is very passionate. Interesting combination of traditional/experimental
with some disco-y beats thrown in.
Hiram:CMX “Taivaan Lapset” Begins with bright guitar notes and band
comes in full throttle, drums and bass, with a rock beat. Fairly deep-voiced singer, kind of an odd
melody to the lyrics. I like the force of
the music and it’s well-produced. There’s
a reprise of the beginning about 2/3rds in.
The lyrics in English are a
little spooky. CMX “Epäonnisten Liikemiesten Helvetti” This one is a hard rocker from the start. Vocalist here sounds very different, may even
be a different person. Lyrics seem a
little odd in English, but that could be the translation I found. The changes are cool, and there’s an extra-cool
one at about 2 minutes in. Abrupt ending. Haifara “Manala” Much more quiet
than the previous piece, solo picking on electric guitar and flute start the
piece. A whispery vocal with gorgeous
flutes, wish I could find a translation, but I enjoy it anyway.Goes into a great discordant section about 1/3 in, didn’t see it coming,
but that’s prog for ya! The Discordant
Procession goes farther down the road, but then the next set of Discord shows
up fast on it’s heels, this time with vocals.
It settles into a lovely progressive-style guitar lead, with some sax
underpinnings. The song closes
with more vocals in a dire sounding emphatic style. Ends as it began, quietly.
Cristi:Emma Ruth Rundle “Heaven” Watery,
echo-y guitar starts the piece. A
confessional style to the female vocalist.
Haunting lyrics, in kind of an almost alt-country vocal style, or maybe
a Kate Bush/Tori Amos-y way. Some violin
comes in, very quietly, into the mix. I
like this very much….and look, she’s based up the road from me (now), Portland,
OR. Lovely, washy guitar lead near the
end (is she ascending?) 😊 Joey Tempest “Outside Heaven” Acoustic guitar and bass (?), or could be a
loopy keyboard (?) , capable male vocalist, with good range. This is more of a rock/ballad than the previous
selection. Well produced aiming-for-hit
fare.
Raff:Anúna "Whispers of Paradise" Begins with harp, I would think. Then lovely choral arrangement. A dreamy vocal,
with visionary lyrics. Flute or keyboard
flutes join in, very magickal piece. Has
a feeling a little of “Moonchild,” in the lyrics for me. You did this just for
me! 😉 The
next, you did not do for me, lol. Metallica's
"The Call of Ktulu" Although
I’ve heard a harpist play Metallica (Carol Tatum covers “Nothing Else Matters”)
before, this is not that. This is the real schmuguggie, and goes to a frequent
metal inspiration, HP Lovecraft’s Cthulu (don’t say that too loud!). Picked electric guitar at the start, goes
into some dissonance, I know the big cacophany is going to come at some
point. Slowly builds in intensity, and
here’s the in-your-face part at 1:30. One
thing they don’t do, is skimp on their songs, this is a longish one. Lotsa wailing lead guitar and crunchy drums
and bass. They keep going up the scale on the guitar melody, which is up
front. Heavy keys (?) for a moment at
about 6:30. Then some fits and starts melodically,
for interest, then the guitars are doubled up a bit before the descent into
quiet madness at the end, with a drumroll and one last time crunching those
gee-tars.
suitkees: King Missile “Heaven” Misquoting a Beatles tune at the beginning,
jokingly, which is understood why, when they start the song, as it does echo
that song. Why do I think that this will
not be as sweet as it seems like it will be?
Acoustic guitar accompanies a slightly sardonic vocal….and yes! I did foresee what would happen! Noir Désir “666.667 Club” This has a heavy and discordant sound from
the start, with whanging guitars and drums.
There’s a hooky little pause here and there, with some mizmar-type horns
arriving from left field and some indistinguishable vocals going on with lots
of banging and clanging. Some wailing sax
shows up and battles with itself. This is
another track where the craziness goes off down the road, eventually. Einstürzende Neubauten “Paradiesseits” Wobbly keyboards with some high-ish notes,
joined with more, that are deeper (or perhaps another instrument). The translation helps, the vocal is a bit
whispered and relaxed, and with good reason.
Nice day at the beach, with a feeling of just enjoying a lazy day. The British Expeditionary Force “All Those
Demons” This one begins very
twinkly. Pleasant vocals chime in, with
those twinklies continuing. Another bit of pleasantry. Ends with some high vocals, fading out. My fave this time was the less-than-heavenly
Noir Desir.
Lorenzo: Good to see you’re able to participate a bit! 😊 Massimo Zamboni feat. Lalli & Marina Parente “Dolorama (Painrama?)”
Picked guitar starts with a bit of a tortured-sounding voice. There is an underpinning of keys, very high,
that give an impression of pain, to me, like fevered pain can feel sort of
shimmery, even through the unpleasantness.
The orchestral sound on synth/keys is very effective. Now a female vocalist comes in, with
wonderful vocal control (as should be, since you advised us she is an opera
singer). Then back to the male vocalist,
as you said, it’s like the woman has the climactic part of the pain experience,
then the male is when things are not as intense. Very hypnotic piece, as it sparkles out,
perhaps the cessation from pain. Franco
Battiato “L'ombra della Luce (The Shadow of Light)” Live, with orchestra, love the beginning
already, with lush strings. Gentle-voiced
male, very expressive and moving vocal.
Oh, this is lovely.Trumpet solo is sublime, too.
Dang, what the h-e-double hockeysticks shall I
finally get to voting for?And I think
we’re not yet near done.

Instead of pairing a track about heaven with a track about hell, I've paired a track that mentions both heaven and hell (though only heaven is mentioned in the title) with a track that doesn't mention either (though it is clearly referring to either heaven or hell):

Here are a pair of songs that share the same title. Even though the styles are completely different, the message is the same, however, the first is a fun Irish sea shanty done by "The Muckers" (the Heaven side) and the second is a more somber and discordant song by "Angels of Light" (one of Michael Gira's [Swans] projects) (the Hell side).

It takes me ages to go through and write even minimal comments on all the music, I'm very slow at such things, but I have listened to most of what has been posted so far and really appreciate it. Thanks. And good to see you participating, Lorenzo. I hope you're knitting, healing, and feeling as well as could be expected under the circumstances. And I'm very pleased to see you participating, the Anders.
And Mila, I loved your last duo of choices.
Just a reminder to please try to have final nominations (your duos of choice) up by Monday. The poll goes up on Tuesday.

HELL: Trophy Scars - "Time in Heaven, Forever in Hell" (not in the Archives)

For a song that may represent Heaven or the idea of Heaven to me I chose this song, "White Horses" - by Jacky (later know as or Jackie Lee). It has a way of being finite in a nostalgic kind of way, most uplifting and happy, but at the same time it tears at the heart for an unreachable past. Whenever I listen to this song it evokes this emotion of being in Heaven (or as close to Heaven as one can be here on earth).
For my Hellish song, I chose "Hell Broke Luce" by Tom Waits. I have to admit, whenever I feel angry, upset, or like I am living in Hell, I listen to Tom Waits. He has a plethora of hellish tunes and this one here about the Hell of War. He is a lyrical maestro. After listening to a few of his songs I always feel much better. (Warning: There are two expletives in this song).

We can nominate Prog music. Originally I made it not to allow it but then in about a couple of hours of putting the topic up following a couple of early comments, I decided to allow music included in the prog archives database. Sorry if you didn't notice and that made choosing more difficult.

Friday got me through Page 3 with first impressions, and a couple of additions for consideration:
Mila-13: Msaki “Dreams”
African percussive sounds and some strummed guitar and fluttery flute-y
instruments. Angelic-voiced female
singer. Stunning, love the lyrics as
well. Strings swell into the mix, then
back into the song itself. Cello embellishment shows up once. Beautifully produced and bsolutely lovely. Laibach
“Smrt za Smrt” Ominous piano, slightly discordant and other sonic whooshes
begin the piece. Drums and angular keys
come crashing in, in a steady march.
Deep speaking vocal and banshee screams and shriekles (Just made that
up, cross with shriek and giggles).
There is a sense of an ancient tongue, with the effect on the vocal,
demon-like (although it could just be in Slovenian or the like) . There’s a floating and oooeeeooo part with
some jabbering keyboards, ¾’s in. Another wash of sound comes in ala the first
“marching,” part, with the deep demonic speaking continuing. The sounds all fade away, with one more word,
“smrt,” (death) intoned.
Cristi: Black Sabbath “Devil & Daughter”Very familiar with the Sabs. Went along with
the original concept, basically, but with a more typical metal singer, this
sounds more like the metal of the time as opposed to Ozzy’s much less histrionic,
yet effective vocals.Searing leads,
wailing, heavy drums and driving bass, as de rigueur.Phenomena “Dance With The Devil”
This one begins with a doubled fiddle sound, at a quick pace. Rest of the band joins in. I find this much more sonically interesting
than the Sabbath one. A metal vocals again,
but there are a lot more dynamics in this and the singer uses his range to good
effect, and he’s got a more classic blues/metal tonalityin the lower registry. The fiddle hook returns a few times, with a lead electric guitar on
top, as the tune fades away.
Tancos:Ry Cooder “Great Dream From Heaven”
A complete change of pace from Mila’s Liebach piece, here is Americana fingerpicked
guitar (as expected from Ry Cooder, of course), a happy, simple, sweet melody. The Pogues:
Boys From the County Hell” I do
know of The Pogues, but can’t say I’ve heard this is done in rousing Irish pub
style with acoustic instruments and strident vocals. Lots of tin whistle and concertina decorate
the steady beat of the drums and strumming guitar. Haystacks Balboa (love the name!) “The
Children of Heaven” Here’s a punk-rocker
style song, with wailing guitars and a rapacious laugh accompanying a deep and
strident vocal. There’s semi-spoken,
satirical verses interspersed with the laughing and some keyboards at the
instrumental break, then lead guitar after the keys. Then back it goes to the
general repeating theme of music/spoken-ish/music 13 Cats (another great
name!) “Hell Bop” Twilight Zone theme done in surf style
starts, then goes into a rapid punkabilly rave, after a brief spoken part with
evil laughs. Sounds almost like they are
saying, “Hale Bopp,” which would be an entirely different song. Fun song for a Halloween party. Joe Satriani “Lights of Heaven” I would be expecting some serious guitar
riffs here. Guitar and bass with light
percussion starts it all out. Then goes
into full on rock band with soaring guitar arching over the bass and
drums. Tasty break near center,
featuring bass and then guitar, then a searing lead commences, with the drums
steadily keeping the pace. Another tasty
bass break, then to a more rhythmic section, that leads to more searing
lead. Song ends with a flourish from the
guitar and last bash on the drums.
Mattias IA Eklundh “Midsummer Night in Hell” A sort of keyboard Greek/Irish jig steps
right up to the stage, guitars are doubled as it goes galumphing along. Wonky guitar lead for a bit and then back to
the main theme….and out. Brave Combo “In
Heaven There Is No Beer” Another cwazy
cartoon wabbit sort of piece, another fun pub sing sort of song, a very fast
polka. Such a sad lament of so much fun lacking in heaven! 😉 Stuart Hamm “Country Music (A Night In Hell)” Some wailing guitars and drums start, but
it’s at the end of their song, sounding like a live large club setting, with
audience wanting them to “play some country music.” A wonky kind of cover versions of familiar
country honky-tonk bluegrass motifs commences, all well played, yet still kinda
tongue-in-cheek. That audience guy wants
them to play a polka after that.
The
Anders: Talking
Heads “Heaven” This one I do know, but I
enjoyed this LP very much. Unmistakably
the Talking Heads, one of the best of the 80’s bands. Kaizers Orchestra "Ompa til du dør" As expected from the title, a wonky sort of
oompah song. A very sarcastic vocal, with lots of muffle on the mic, while the
music oompahs along unperterbably. It
gains in intensity and there is a quite enjoyable lead during the break about
halfway in. He doesn’t like this Sven
Korner person, it would seem from the translation of the lyrics, who is doomed
to hell. Tune comes to an end fairly
abruptly.
I
prophesy disaster: Of
course I know of Todd Rundgren, I know some material and some I don’t. Same with Alan Parsons. Todd: “Everybody’s
Going To Heaven” Begins right away with
whacked out drums and guitars. A little
way in, effected and strident vocals enter.
Another sarcastic song about heaven, here, but there’s plenty of truth
in it, too, as is the best sarcasm. Fast
and clean lead in the instrumental break, about center, that goes on for a bit,
then goes into a sort of cacophonic (is that a word?) part with lots of phasing
etc. and lots going on with the instrument.
Song comes to a long fade.
Alan: “Can’t Take It With
You” The music starts with some
keyboard/flute-y sound, kind of Spaghetti Western sound to it. Moves into a very signature APP sort of
sound, accessible, yet complex. Very
lovely, clear production, with great separation between all instruments and
vocals. There are some castanets sounds
(again echoing that Spaghetti Western beginning). Very apt guitar solo over steady drums,
castanets are back, and the keys continue in their repeating phrase. Then a break, back to the whistling sound on
keys before the chorus fades out the song.
Mike: Great idea, to present two with the same
name, yet different. The Muckers “New
York Girls” Here is an Irish sound, with fiddle and tin whistle. A sea shanty sort (there is a resurgence of
interest in these lately), done apace and with humour. Adept musicianship and sweeter in feel than,
say, The Pogues. A bit of a bawdy tune,
which is also often heard in these types of pieces. Angels of Light “New York Girls”
This has a much more sedate sound, which intrigues me from the
start. A deep-voiced, gravelly, whispery
vocal. Kind of a spooky, hypnotic, atmospheric
piece. Come hither, yet keep your
distance, if you know what’s good for you.
Next part, heaven and hell.
Oceansize “Heaven Sent” Vocal
chorus, matching keyboard notes starts this all off, then goes right into drums
and whangy guitar and keys. The vocals
are a bit obscured by the effect(s) on them, reminding me of early REM
(although they didn’t use effects on the vocals). The shimmering instruments continue on under,
there is a feeling almost of being in bright light, although in an audio way,
to me. The chorus and keys matching each other comes
back, with the main vocal now arching over the top. The song gains in intensity and then dies
out, with a wham and then a whisper. Trophy Scars “Time in Heaven,
Forever in Hell” Almost a live sound to
this at the opening. Soaring electric
guitar and expert piano, with percussive washes. The vocals are fairly effected, layered with
themselves. Regret song, where he
finally lets his anger loose vocally, toward the end, along with a driving
electric lead, then drops back to his resignation.
tigerfeet:Jacky “White Horses” Soft horns
and quickly trotting guitars and soft percussion enter the field with a horse-mad
young girl cooing sweetly. This girl was
me as a girl! I had to look up the tv
show, it wasn’t shown in the US, but I certainly would have been an avid
fan. Just light and lovely 60’s style theme
song piece, we had a tv show theme poll some time back and it would have fit
perfectly there, too.Tom Waits “Hell Broke Luce” In complete contrast, this starts with very
rough and nightmarish discord, Tom Waits’ distinctive voice and no-holds-barred
lyrics. There is an eerie vocal chorus
here and there. Hell on earth sort of life for the person in the song, madness
brought on by too much sad life. This
is one of the most divergent pairings here, certainly.

Glenn Hughes sings on the entire Phenomena debut album. He is one of the best vocalists ever. The whole debut album is a gem, can easily please hard rock, AOR listeners and even some metalheads.
The underrated Tony Martin sings on the BS song, the Martin era of BS is often overlooked which is a shame IMHO.

^Hughes is amazing and just as amazing is that he is still at it. The latest by the Dead Daisies came up on my Amazon autoplay and I was thinking the singer sounds like Glenn Hughes (and sure enough, it was). This cover of the Humble Pie classic is from last year.

Agreed that Glenn is a fantastic singer. And I enjoyed the Phenomena piece quite a bit, I liked that they went outside of the usual rock box and used the fiddle, which is often associated with the Devil in music.

As I remember that Greg did not want this poll to last too long, I will nominate the two songs I posted earlier - Anuna's "Whispers of Paradise" and Metallica's "The Call of Ktulu". This time around I had trouble coming up with good suggestions - not for lack of good heaven/hell music, but because of my own lack of ideas :D. If I remember correctly, I will be in charge of the next poll.

Don't think we need links again if those were provided before. It might be helpful to some, however (links rather than new embeds).
Hope people don't mind me keeping a tight set schedule, but otherwise it can get confusing. And with duos, well that makes for more listening potentially when it comes to nominations (as well as all suggestions). I wish I'd made a YouTube playlist for all suggestions (never done this and don't wish to step on Geo's territory, so to speak). I do want to stick to all options being put up in the poll on Tuesday.
I don't know what my heaven and hell duo will be yet from three heaven and three hell possibilities. I'll go with the Delibes or Tallis for heaven methinks, but three hells are up for grabs. I thought the Penderecki a good choice, but I feel that those who might appreciate it for the theme would likely know it well already. Might go with the more easy listening Hellraiser option, or maybe the Xiu Xiu.

First thoughts on a few additions by George and Logan:
George:The
Dead Daisies “30 Days in the Hole,” surely it’s own kind of hell) Acoustic guitar accompanying some wonderful vocal
chords on this classic song. Stands quite well as an acoustic duo piece, no
complaints here. I had the pleasure of seeing Humble Pie open
for ELP at the Hollywood Bowl in 1971, first time they made it to the west coast,
that was a completely different experience.😊
Stereotype & ELEX “Tengoju”
Here we have an electronic piece, all keys with whooshing sounds and
some wonky sounds that gain and fall back in intensity with some percussive
parts. This one doesn’t leave me with a
feeling of heaven, for the most part, however..
Nastie Band “Lucifer’s
Grotto” Definitely ominious beginning
with keys, percussion and some randomly placed sounds and bells/cymbals. There are some electronic swooshing sounds,
kind of like hearing a sword or bullwhip slice through air. Fuzzy effected guitar comes in here and there,
in a disquieting way, and pulsing into higher and higher registers, then back
down again, repetitively. The percussion
comes to the fore, this is another processional sort of piece to my ear. A whirring thing comes around and around,
with a boomy sort of a sound. The
percussion begins to sound almost clocklike, but ticking very fast up to
the end.
Logan:Tallis “Spem in alium” Here angelic
voices that almost sound like flutes at first, then it becomes clear they are
all vocalists. Transcendent and
transporting piece, as these are meant to be, definitely good chills inducing.Christopher Young “Hellbound
Heart” Begins ominously as one might
expect. Orchestral soundtrack with
suspense-building strings and some harp playing discordantly. Flutes join in with the various strings. Cellos create a very deep, menacing
tone. There is a sense of melancholy
about 2/3rds in, turning to a more despairing tonality. The piece becomes less lushy populated, now
just strings and piano at the end. Angelo Badalamenti “The Voice of Love” Here is music that reminds us of how much a
soundtrack can contribute to visual arts and become absolutely one of the
addictive parts of a well-loved tale. I
know this one, so wouldn’t be able to vote for it, but Badalamenti’s music will
always be entwined with the characters and visuals of Twin Peaks to create my
fascination for this series. Such a very
moving scene with the music and symbolism of these characters in that room with
the angel.

That's a really wonderful write-up, thank you so much. I really love that Tallis piece, and I'm very much inline with you on the Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me piece and how it contributes to the visuals. Anticipate errors, this is just after a quick run-through and I will be editing this anon (just wanted to make start on this). Nor is it formatted properly. It's mostly for my record, and there's still some time to finalise nominations for those who listed more than the one heaven and hell duo.
I'm doing this in the order of the participants first post that links to/ includes music for the topic.
Logan: Krzysztof Penderecki - "Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima" / Thomas Tallis - "Spem in alium"
Snicolette: Hell: Atilio Adrian Matteucci & Jesse Ahmann - "To One In Paradise" & Heaven: Azam Ali w/ Hildegard Von Bingen's - "O Vis Aeternitatis"
nick_h_nz: Teeth of the Sea - Whilst We Live in Fear of Hell / Jordan Reyne - Heavenly Creatures
JD: Harry Partch -Delusion of the Fury: Act I: Treats with Death and with Life Despite Death: Emergence of the Spirit / Chris De Burgh - Spanish Train
Lewian: Idem - Suedirland Bantry Bay / Ex-Einstuerzende Neubauten FM Einheit - Korrektionsanstalt
mathman0806: Love and Rockets - "Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven" / "Bound For Hell"
Mila-13: Msaki - Dreams / Laibach - Smrt za smrt (Death for Death)
**Mirakaze: Can -"Halleluhwah" and "Aumgn" perhaps?**
Various titles will need editing to fit them in the options, and this is mostly just a quick copy-paste so not formatted. Having done this very quickly I may have missed some decided on options. I won't be putting this up until Tuesday, maybe about 36 hours after the time of this posting. There is still some time for any minds to change, time to add others for potential nomination, and for others to participate if they wish.
As said, the poll goes up on Tuesday. Please try to finalise all choices by tomorrow (any time of the day) if possible.

I know Mirakaze was considering "Halleluhwah" and "Aumgn" from Can's Tago Mago. Love those. I didn't add her to the list as it had not been decided. That was before I changed this to allowing "prog" options based on posts. Those are permissible if you want to participate.

I'm kinda torn between my two hellish proposals. I would prefer to nominate a less known act but I believe that you guys are not into electronic music really. On the other hand, is industrial any better? Hmm . .
Ok these are my nominations after all:
Heaven: Msaki - Dreams
Hell: Laibach - Smrt za smrt (Death for Death)
Logan, I'm sorry for being a bit late, I've been quite busy these days.

I'll go with Ry Cooder, "Great Dream from Heaven," and The Pogues, "Boys from the County Hell."

^ Thanks to you both for your nominations. And Mila, you're still very very much in time. It's not even like I'll even start on it first thing when I wake up tomorrow. First I need my coffee, two cups (one black and one with creamer and sugar, sometimes mixed together). This morning I made the mistake of posting before I had my coffee, the results weren't great.

I'll go with the pair of songs that I mentioned first, Heaven: (The Muckers "New York Girls") and Hell: (The Angels of Light "New York Girls")
------------- I'm sorry, if you were right, I'd agree with you. Robin Williams.

Thanks M&M (Mike and Malcom), so its just Suitkees that is undecided -- he hasn't been around for a while, hope all is well -- and Mirakaze. I decided that I will add her choices unless I hear otherwise. Sure lots of us know them, but I think it's an awesome addition to the playlist.
I'll edit the formatted list to this post later, working on that now. If you see anything that needs correction, or if I missed anyone, please mention it (see earlier post with names attached). With duos especially I have to abbreviate and squeeze various ones to fit the poll option spaces.
This is how I have it now to fit the poll options:
Logan: Penderecki: Threnody for the Victims / Tallis: Spem in alium
Snicolette: Matteucci/Ahmann: To One in Paradise/Ali: O Vis Aeternitatis
nick_h_nz: Teeth of the Sea: Whilst We Live in Fear/ Reynes: Heavenly..
JD: Harry Partch: Delusion of the Fury/ De Burgh: Spanish Train
mathman0806: Love&Rockets: Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven/Bound for Hell
Mila-13: Msaki: Dreams / Laibach: Smrt za smrt (Death for Death)
Hiram: CMX: Taivaan lapset / Epäonnisten liikemiesten helvetti
Cristi: E.R. Rundle: Heaven / Phenomena: Dance with the Devil
Raff: Anuna: Whispers of Paradise / Metallica: The Call of Ktulu
Suitkees: King Missile: Heaven / Noir Désir: 666.667 Club
jamesbaldwin: M. Zamboni: Dolorama / Franco Battiato: L'ombra della Luce
Tancos: Cooder: Great Dream from Heaven/ Pogues: Boys...Country Hell
The Anders: Talking Heads: Heaven / Kaizers Orchestra: Ompa til du dør
I prophesy disaster: Rundgren: Everybody's Going to Heaven/ APP: Can't Take It...
TCat: The Muckers: New York Girls/ Angels of Light: New York Girls
tigerfeet: Jacky: White Horses / Tom Waits: Hell Broke Luce
Mirakaze?: Can: Halleluhwah and Aumgn
That's eighteen.
EDIT: It's now Tuesday here, and I'll add Suitkees first duo to the list (if I hear otherwise in the next nine or so hours, then I can change). The poll is ready to go (put the options in and just waiting to post it tomorrow). Thanks for all the nominations and suggestions.
Okay, I put it up a number of hours earlier than I planned to. Accidentally lost the edit on the poll I had ready, so re-did it (not hard with my list above that was formatted for the space), and wanted to get it out of the way.

^ Glad to hear that, Kees. I felt pretty confident, though both good pairings.
