I was just a 20th Century Boy way back in 1970 at the age of 10/11 in the year that gave birth to the Glam Rock era. It was a year when long-haired musicians were prettied up with heavy mascara, platform shoes and tinsel & glitter, and that was just the men. The ten favourite obscure prog albums listed below completely passed me by at the time of release, but thanks to ProgArchives and the Internet, I'm making up for a misspent musical youth now. That year is surprisingly stacked! Today I'll take: 10. Beggar's Opera. Act One 09. Atomic Rooster. Death Walks Behind You 08. Gentle Giant. s/t 07. T2. It'll All Work Out in Boomland 06. King Crimson. In the Wake of Poseidon 05. Emerson, Lake & Palmer. s/t 04. Van der Graaf Generator. The Least We Can Do is Wave to Each Other 03. Genesis. Trespass 02. Van der Graaf Generator. H to He Who Am the Only One 01. King Crimson. Lizard HM: Black Widow. Sacrifice Cressida. s/t Pink Floyd. Atom Heart Mother Rare Bird. As Your Mind Flies By Raw Material. s/t Okay, so pretty much any album between #2 to #8 deserves TOP3 and WOULD get there on another day. I'm constantly changing my mind on VDGG's internal battle, for example, and there was time I vouched for Gentle Giant's debut to be their best. Loads of five star albums in there. T2 always makes my day, although they left my heavy rotation a decade ago, similar to Atomic Rooster - a band I almost considered equal to Uriah Heep in high school. Also a great year for less touted bands, Cressida, Rare Bird, Beggar's Opera, it's all gold - and I still left out fringe prog stuff, i.e. Santana, Lucifer's Friend, Miles...
