The second of six decades in the history of Prog-Rock and what a decade it was! I could have easily chosen ten favourite prog albums from each year during the classic 1970's era, but I somehow managed to narrow it down to just one choice, which could have been a totally different selection on a different day. If you want to choose more than one album for each year, then that's fine too. Let's Rock! Smile

1970: Bachdenkel - Lemmings
1971: Spring - Spring
1972: Khan - Space Shanty
1973: Renaissance - Ashes Are Burning
1974: Refugee - Refugee
1975: Rick Wakeman - The Myths & Legends of King Arthur & the Knights of the Round Table
1976: Camel - Moonmadness
1977: England - Garden Shed
1978: Richard Wright - Wet Dream
1979: Tony Banks - A Curious Feeling

I think what we really need is everyone's Top 10 list of prog albums year by year, from 1967 thru' to 2020, then I can assign points to your top album choices as per usual. I've quickly realised it's really hard to narrow it down to just one favourite album for each year, so in the words of Orange Juice, maybe I should just "Rip It Up and Start Again". Smile

Impossible to compile really seeing as many classic prog albums were released in the first half of the decade.

OK, let's give it a try.
70 - Gentle Giant - Gentle Giant.
71 - Fragile - Yes.
72 - Close to the Edge - Yes.
73 - 6 Wives of Henry the VIII - Rick Wakeman.
74 - Hamburger Concerto - Focus.
75 - Wish you were Here - Pink Floyd.
76 - Tales of Mystery and Imagination - The Alan Parsons Project.
77 - Animals - Pink Floyd.

And I don't really know how to go for the last two years. I guess I might go with The Wall for 79, but I don't really remember an option for 78... I guess Incantations from Mike Oldfield or Equinox from Jean Michel Jarre.

It's not so bad. I am generally not one to accept limiting to one album, or comply strictly with the demands, but it's not like this is anything to be cast in stone (just another PP thread), so I went ahead and actually found it relatively easy, precisely because I didn't give a hoot. Smile

I found it an almost impossible task too (along with many others here), so I'm going to completely redo this thread, and then we can name our ten favourite prog albums from each individual year, instead of each decade - although I might struggle to name ten favourite prog albums for each year when we get well beyond the classic 1970's era. Smile

Maybe do it by sub-genre, e,g favourite symphonic album by year, favourite eclectic / psych-space / jazz-fusion / Canterbury / prog-folk, etc, etc, or group related sub genres together.

Your correct, not many here can name ten favourite albums from the years 1978 and beyond. So could you run the threads as planned through 2020, and then come back and do the 70's?

Sounds good to me and the 1967 prog poll is already up-and-running, where you can pick ten favourites from that year, instead of just the one. Smile

I'm going to do this but there are a LOT of tied albums in most of these years, and while I'll pick one for each year, it's gonna be a fairly approximate crapshoot based on how I'm feeling today. Other choices in parentheses:

1970: ELP by ELP (Jesus Christ Superstar)

1971: Fragile by Yes (Nursery Cryme by Genesis, Pawn Hearts by VdGG)

1972: Thick as a Brick by Jethro Tull (Foxtrot by Genesis, Close to the Edge by Yes)

1973: The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd (Io Sono Nato Libero by Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Selling England By The Pound by Genesis)

1974: Crime of the Century by Supertramp (Mirage by Camel, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis, Relayer by Yes)

1975: Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd (The Snow Goose by Camel, Si on avait besoin d’une cinquième saison by Harmonium)

1976: Moonmadness by Camel (A Trick of the Tail by Genesis, Romantic Warrior by Return to Forever)

1977: A Farewell to Kings by Rush (Animals by Pink Floyd)

1978: Hemispheres by Rush

1979: Heresie by Univers Zero (Western Culture by Henry Cow)

^ Those are my two favourite King Crimson albums and either of those could have made my list. I just have not been listening to King Crimson as much the last few years, but my tastes can be cyclical when it comes to the classics. Most of what I listen to is newer to these ears.

Another one in PA list and one out of it taken from another topic -- I went with Bubu before for 1978 and almost went with National Health, this time it's National Health.

Prog in PA:

1970: Magma - Kobaïa
1971: Igor Wakhévitch - Docteur Faust
1972: Jean-Claude Vannier - L'enfant assassin des mouches
1973: Can - Future Days
1974: Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom
1975: Cos - Postaeolian Train Robbery
1976: Geinoh Yamashirogumi - Osorezan / Dou no Kenbai
1977: Franco Leprino - Integrati ... Disintegrati
1978: National Health - National Health
1979: The Residents - Eskimo

Albums out of PA:

1970: Exuma - Exuma
1971: Egisto Macchi - I futuribili
1972: Ennio Morricone - Cosa avete fatto a Solange?
1973: Mandingo - The Primeval Rhythm of Life
1974: Janko Nilovic - Rythmes Contemporains
1975: Lula Côrtes e Zé Ramalho - Paêbirú
1976: Joni Mitchell - Hejira
1977: Television - Marquee Moon
1978: Nina Hagen Band - Nina Hagen Band
1979: Tubeway Army - Replicas
