This thread (and eventually a series of threads) is entirely dedicated to your recommendations, fellow forum users. Please comment your top 3 most obscure albums from the year 1969; they might be albums in your collection that were hard to find and not many people know, some albums you have heard about but can never get, or some pretty wacky record by an Estonian progressive proto-punk band that you streamed online for some reason.

*Conventional albums that many people know are not welcome! LOL This is a joke, of course, you can suggest whatever albums you feel are obscure and/or underground*

From 1969?  Most record companies were not taking a punt on underground music around then so my choices would be familiar to most, including 'From Genesis to Revelation' which only shifted around 600 copies on release and went unnoticed.

An excellent thread topic, especially considering we won't see In the Court of the Crimson King winning the 1969 poll yet again. Tongue

1. ANDROMEDA - Andromeda  (Proto-Prog  United Kingdom) -   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkIrXwLCbB8" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkIrXwLCbB8
2. ANDWELLA'S DREAM - Love and Poetry (Proto-Prog  United Kingdom) -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rEcnpplYjI" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rEcnpplYjI
3. ARCADIUM - Breathe Awhile (Psychedelic/Space Rock  United Kingdom) -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFtWctjASs8" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFtWctjASs8

That's the actual order of my Top 3 obscure favourites from 1969. It's purely a coincidence that they happen to be in alphabetical order too. Wink

I can only name one, but this one is a very obscure one. it was only available in porn shops in Amsterdam. we found it at a record fair

though it is from the Netherlands the music sounds like Krautrock in the vein of the first two albums of the Cosmic Jokers

Great poll idea, but you should have started in 2021 and went back in time. Most of the forum participants have an aversion to newer bands. I could list multiple obscure albums from the last twenty years, not so much from half a century ago.

We'll get to most recent times at some point.

I prefer it this way around, starting from 1967 and gradually working our way towards 2021. I'm in no hurry to get to the music of the present day. Smile

^Disagee. Ever heard the later Beatles album? Overproduced, big time. Does Barbara D. play live with a band when she's recording. How about Peter Hammill or VDGG? Doubt it. Plenty on jazz cats and classical musicians record live but hardly anyone else.

Tea & Symphony - Asylum for the Musically insane
Melmoth - La Devanture des Ivresses
Collectors - Grass and Wiold Strawberrues.

I have the same opinion about VdGG or Peter Hammill or whoever; I would rather hear their albums recorded live in the studio. but at least VdGG did publish some material that was recorded live in the studio

Nice thread. I will most likely forget half of what I want to list and also regret not having X in there..but yeah here goes:
Friendsound - Joyride (American “Krautrock” at it’s finest)
Alrune Rod - s/t (Danish psychedelic pastry)
Holger Czukay - Canaxis (Complete mindfeck of an album..and brilliant to boot)

Edith: Yup! I obviously forgot about Cromagnon’s underground classic Orgasm

I just went through our collection. the self-titled albums of After All and Andromeda and "!" by Pesky Gee are pretty obscure too. and "Orgasm" by Cro-Magnon, which is also one of the weirdest albums ever

Probably the most obscure 1969 album for me is Van der Graaf Generator - The Aerosol Grey Machine. Not very obscure, I know, but it's probably one of their lesser known albums.

of these 29 albums we have 13. I am curious about the Melmoth album; both band name (named after a horror novel by Charles Maturin) and album title (which translates as "The Shop Window of Drunkenesses") are very interesting. according to Discogs the album is from 1970 though. Rateyourmusic gives the release date as 1969

I don't think I know much from 1969 that is really obscure. As you should expect I love Holger Czukay's Canaxis album, and not everyone knows the wonderful Mercator Projected by East of Eden. Other than that my 1969 picks would be pretty well known around here (Renaissance and VDGG are listed among the top 20 1969 albums on PA, I wouldn't call that obscure, as are Monster Movie and Phallus Dei).

since the Melmoth album apparently received an award in 1969 Discogs must be off.

Melmoth is an alias of Dashiell Hedayat, who was backed by very early Gong for his album "Obsolete"; we have that album

Can't get much more obscure than West Siberian prog, so I'll recommend debut albums of the two most important Finnish prog bands:

Wigwam - Hard N' Horny
Tasavallan Presidentti - Tasavallan Presidentti

They both did better albums later, but these are still well worth checking out.

Can are far from obscure but do check out Monster Movie if you haven't already.

Wikipedia and YouTube say 1970, but most other sources (Discogs, Rateyourmusic, Allmusic etc.) say 1969.

Spirit of John Morgan - "Spirit of John Morgan" - this one is so obscure that it isn't on PA :)  It's been refered to as blues rock on Discogs, but there is MUCH more to it. Other reference I saw qualified them as "psychedelic proto progressive blues rock". Add some jazz to this brew and you'll be close. On Discogs this album is listed for 1969, but some other sources claim it was recorded in 1969 but released two years later. It's definitely worth a spin.

It may be that it is not in the archives because it is not considered to fit under the umbrella of "progressive rock".

I very much agree with you here, in theory at least... and yeah, most of the times I would consider it a plus if they tell me it was all recorded in one take. That's the way music should be played and heard. So live in the studio, or just live, very often I like it better. But then, it's not a rule set in stone, if I hear an album played with all the production benefits you can think and it sounds good, or better than the live versions, then I will enjoy it too. Different methods will suit different artists better than others.
