I've gotten quite a bit since then from thrift shops, sales, etc., usually CDs, sometimes cassettes. But for this post, I'm only going to emphasize what was completely unexpected, and somewhat unexpected Prog finds. (So, for example, I won't mention any of my Tori Amos CDs (Crossover Prog) because she was super popular in the 90's, and her CDs are all over the thrift stores in the U.S.--I could have multiple copies of "Little Earthquakes" by now If I wanted. Or, perhaps, eg., 10 CDs of Santana's Supernatural, but no thanks  ).SO, list any UNEXPECTED Prog that you've come across for free or purchase, whether bargain or not, which normally means: a) not from a music store (unless that store wouldn't normally sell what you found), and b) you weren't necessarily looking for what you found at the time, but still had enough interest to get it. Vinyl ok too (I've found some great Vinyl, but I am mostly mobile and have no room for it). Anyway, here's my list for about the last 4 years: TOTALLY unexpected: Absolutely Free - Frank Zappa (thrift shop in small Utah town--they wanted $2 but I talked them down to $1, as the CD was scuffed and in an Aerosmith case (fortunately played ok, though)). Pleiades' Dust - Gorguts (bargain place, mid sized town in NM) Captain Beyond - (CD from a thrift shop in a small Utah town) Beneath the Mask - Chick Corea Electrik Band (CD from a thrift shop in small AZ town) Heavy Weather - Weather Report (ditto) On An Island - David Gilmour (don't remember where, but its an unusual find in my area of the world) The Edges of Twilight - The Tea Party (thrift shop in Santa Fe, NM) Effloresce - Oceansize (thrift shop in Santa Fe, NM) Once Again and Down to Earth - Barclay Jaymes Harvest (library in Pahrump, NV) Dancing To the Devil's Beat - Strawbs (shop in Silver City, NM) two discs from Steeleye Span (thrift in a small AZ town) Exposed - Mike Oldfield (same as above) Somewhat unexpected: Dream Theater - Dream Theater (CD from don't remember where) The Bedlam in Goliath - The Mars Volta (CD at thrift shop in Tucson, AZ) Imaginary Voyage - Jean-Luc Ponty (CD, thrift shop, don't remember where) The Crazy World of Arthur Brown (music shop in Medford, OR, on bargain rack) Live at Budokan - Dream Theater (same place as above; was given to me with purchase of Arthur Brown (!!??) David Axelrod - David Axelrod (might be completely unexpected, but it was in San Francisco, where you can often find more unusual stuff) Ecotopia - Oregon (thrift shop, I think in Santa Fe(?)). Into the Labyrinth - Dead Can Dance (ditto the above, in San Fran) Music Magic - Return to Forever (thrift shop in Tucson, AZ) Kraan (music store Kohn, Germany, in 2017 when I went for Night of the Prog/Bike tour) Clannad II and Dulaman - Clannad (don't remember where, perhaps thrift shop in Santa Fe, NM) Probably more, but I can't remember everything. ------------- Z |

| I found a Matt Stevens cd at the local cd store near me. He's an english musician on here that has a solo career and also plays with the post rock band the Fierce and the Dead. I've found a few others here and there over the years including some late 70's Kayak albums and a Barclay James Harvest album in a record store I used to go to(on vinyl that I still have somewhere). I've found Genesis and Rush in thrift stores and probably some other stuff as well. It's been a while though. |

Over the years I have run across many original pieces of vinyl in antique shops and flea markets but recently found a first press of Thick As A Brick (US) with newspaper piece intact in antique mall and a copy of first Spooky Tooth lp US version. Found two copies on original vinyl of Lucifers Friend -1st one ( gatefold ) and a promo lp copy of Clear Spot by Capt Beefheart at a small antique shop only 3 blocks from my house. All lp's were $3 each...and in very good shape.

I collect vinyl only, so all my unexpected findings are records 1. Found on the flea market among cabbage and pants: The Collectors - first album from1968. I had no idea who they were, but the cover and side-long track made me full of hope. Bought it (cheap) and was blown away - what a gem it is! <32. Another time when I struck prog gold was in small record store (the only one in my town) where there were new cds and small section of used records - mostly pop/pop rock. Among all those boring stuff, out of the blue, there was first Magma (double lp). Asking for the price I tried not to sound too excited :) The price was pretty cheap (10$) but the seller announced the price with apologetic voice as it was the most priced record (being double) in the whole bin. It's not prog but one of my best findings - once I've managed to buy Nitzer Ebb 'Belief' signed by all band members for 5euros as the cover was "damaged by some writings" according to the seller's statement :D

As already reported, found a still wrapped LP All This And World War II, a movie soundtrack from 1976, a few years ago at a long-defunct used record/thrift store down the street (for the original price). Somewhat rare. It was an odd, unsuccessful movie project with Beatle songs set to images of World War II. It's only connection to prog or prog-related is that it had on it Peter Gabriel singing Strawberry Fields Forever and Bryan Ferry warbling She's leaving Home (other examples are Magical Mystery Tour by Ambrosia, Lovely Rita/Polythene Pam by Roy Wood, With a Little Help from My Friends/Nowhere Man by Jeff Lynne, and the London Symphony Orchestra doing The End) . Unfortunately, it had other covers done by the likes of the Bee Gees, Helen Reddy (RIP), and Leo Sayer (he did three which goes to show how much clout this long-forgotten has-been had back then). ------------- "It just has none of the qualities of your work that I find interesting. I picked up a 5-CD box set of Rick Wakeman's classic early albums from Morrisons supermarket for just £8 and I also found a copy of Genesis' Wind & Wuthering in a charity bargain book store for just £2, so at least the CD wasn't left "wuthering" on the vine, so to speak.
