In no order:

1. Hemispheres
2. Moving Pictures
3. Permanent Waves
4. Caress of Steel
5. A Farewell To Kings

2112 would make the list if side two had most of the excitement as side one.

I like the eighties era a lot and I think just about anything they did in that decade is better than anything they did later but it's still no match for their prog era(obviously I'm thinking post MP here when I say eighties)imo.

This is not so easy...

1. Grace Under Pressure
2. Hemispheres
3. Permanent Waves
4. Moving Pictures
5. 2112

All of those before 2112 were pretty solid too.  85-96 were pretty bad years from my point of view, but  even with some real missteps and simply too many songs, I do really like Vapor Trails, Snakes & Arrows and Clockwork Angels.

1. Hemispheres
2. Moving Pictures
3. A Farewell to Kings
4. Permanent Waves
5. A Show of Hands (believe it or not!)

The first four in my favorites list are from the classic 70's era. A Show of Hands sums up the 80's era, which is the one I grew up with.

Nice! I've seen many of their tours over the past 35yrs, I saw the Show of Hands tour in Maryland. That is one of my fav live albums. I also have the VHS tape of that show......

I have that one too! it's nice that it has a different setlist. The good thing is that there's La Villa Strangiato, YYZ, and In the Mood. The bad thing is that there's only half of The Rhythm Method and nothing from Signals.

I only saw them once, on the Time Machine tour, and had to travel all the way from Guatemala to San Antonio, TX, but I can assure you, it was one of the happiest days of my life! Smile

That's great.......At least you got to see them live, we saw Time Machine tour twice once in San Francisco and in Vancouver WA, that was an excellent tour.

Caress is great IMO, except for I'm Going Bald, which is like a big boil in the middle of a (otherwise pretty) face.

1) A Farewell to Kings
2) Hemispheres
3) Moving Pictures
4) Permanent Waves
5) Signals

Number 5 is tough. Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows were under consideration. Fan of both those albums. First four have been locked in those positions for many years now.

possibly the greatest 5 album run of all time. Signals is a great album and probably an album I like more than the stuff before Hemispheres. 2112 is undoubtedly classic but just now seems very dated and hasn't aged well IMO.

I don't know. It's rather like a palate cleanser for the rest of the album.

The first time I spun CoS the only three songs I liked were the first three on the album. Then I got to The Necromancer and side two and I thought, what in the hell is this?? Confused Confused Dead

Of course now my favorites are Necromancer and Fountain of Lamneth

Richardh,

It certainly is one of the great runs. 2112 is probably the most important album in the band's catalog as it undoubtedly saved the band. And because it was done under their terms, it allowed them creative control going forward. Had Geddy, Alex and Neil bent to the label's demand to release a more commercial album, I don't see how we get Xanadu, La Villa Strangiato or Jacob's Ladder going forward.

However, like you, outside of the first 7 minutes of 2112 and A Passage to Bangkok it is not an album I revisit much.
