What are your top ten Non-progressive rock bands?
You can pick proto-prog bands since prog wasn't a thing when they started.
Here's mine in no particular order:
  • The Beatles
  • Grateful Dead
  • The Police
  • Dire Straits
  • The Who
  • Allman Brothers
  • Rolling Stones
  • Dave Matthews Band
  • Eric Johnson
  • Blind Eric Cream & the Dominos Wink ( AKA All Things Clapton)

Not to stir the pot here but...Non-Progressive in what manner? Their PA classification?
Many bands I don't consider 'Progressive rock" are still listed on the PA site, including bands like ASIA, Santana or Bowie. While they may display progressive tendencies they aren't PROG IMO.
That being said...

Thomas Dolby
Peter Gabriel
Santana
Joe Jackson
The Who
Police
Stewart Copland
Bowie
Billy Joel
Led Zeppelin
Robert Palmer
Queen
Saga
Sparks
Larry Gowan
Sweet
Supertramp
Talking Heads
Tomita
Tom Waits
Stevie Wonder
Frank Zappa

...just to name a few !

There are way too many of them, even if I go by artists who are not on Progarchives. And then, many of them might be progressive in one way or another.

Wow. In no order:

The Beatles
The Who
Led Zeppelin
REM
Black Sabbath
U2
The Rolling Stones
The Police
Styx (not quite prog imo)
Pearl Jam

Edit: I'm sure I'm forgetting some. In fact after posting this I see the Grateful Dead and the Talking Heads from others lists both of whom I forgot. I also am a big fan of 90's rock so Alice in Chains and Soundgarden(among others) would be bubbling under also.

Yea, I was kind of using the PA classifications for prog bands but there is certainly room for discussion & interpretation for many bands.
Nice list BTW.

My Bad. First I put in the prog lists section by mistake. When I realized it was in the wrong place I meant to move it to the general music section and missed ( I was in a hurry) . Maybe on of the admins will move it for me.

At least rock related or rock in certain music and do artists as well as bands and use progressive rock to include ones included in PA Prog categories:

Ennio Morricone
Serge Gainsbourg (for Histoire de Melody Nelson and Cannabis especially)
Nick Drake
David Bowie
Nico
Pram
Air
Broadcast
Janko Nilovic
Vladimir Cosma
Television
Stereolab
Electrelane

Oops, thirteen, darn these extra fingers on my feet (keep counting more of them, seems I have ten foot fingers in total).

Was going to mention Egisto Macchi, but was questioning the rock related quotient as I'm pushing it as a rock list already. I should give this list more thought. Love Cream, by the way, and I argued for it being in PA as Proto-Prog, but was pelted by posters in a hail of rancid dairy products (creamed one might say except I still think I presented a good case for it).

Off the top of my head, in alphabetical order, not in PA (including prog-related):

-Bauhaus
-Einstürzende Neubauten
-The Fall
-Jesus Lizard
-Joy Division
-Melvins
-Motelli Skronkle
-Shellac
-Sielun Veljet
-Sonic Youth

The list would probably be different on another day.

Quite often when people say band they also are referring to solo artists, and a lot of so-called artists are not truly solo (the band name is the frontman's name, has a band backing it, or just has session musicians behind it -- depends on what one means by solo). For instance, I see topics made by people who use band in the title of a poll and themselves mention solo artists in the list.

It's quite like with songs, a lot of people include fully instrumental music with no singing when they talk about songs. So I don't think one need to be that exact or pedantic commonly.

I decided to include both "solo" artists and bands because the OP (Argo) wrote early on in response to a list with both bands and solo artists "Nice list BTW" without taking issue with the solo artists. I took that as tacit support from the one who is conducting this exercise. Had Argo said, "Nice list, but I would rather focus on bands proper" then my approach would have been different. Nice means precise (or accurate), and so I took it to precisely mean that the OP is okay with artists. :P People do use terms in different ways, and what matters is intent. Perhaps the OP was just being quite nice in a polite and tolerant way by calling it a list nice. I do think that was added more as a polite aside (it wasn't the main thrust of that post which was addressing a concern).

If it's important to the OP for whatever reason this topic was made, then I will happily give a list of ten bands proper.

Yeah...attending a Stevie Wonder gig may have been somewhat of a luke-warm experience if he just showed up with a piano and mic.

...or maybe not?

Lingo is tricky...and highly fascinating methinks.

It is fascinating, and in Wonder's case he definitely could pull it off. :D Imagine Bobby Beausoleil without his Freedom Orchestra. It still would be killer (oops, that's bad taste).

And then there's the case of the one man band. A solo artist which is also a band (or like, or imitative of a band) as it's not a solo instrument.

You're of course right and I didn't mean to complain. It was just an observation, I saw all these after thinking about the question myself and already having ruled out some of these (Joe Jackson surely would've made my list, some others potentially). After all Scorn is something of a solo artist (although he/they weren't originally) so who am I to complain?

Personally, I think you guys are overthinking this. What about 'Bands' where one of the members writes all or most of the material and the rest of the band just plays along?

Overthinking? I think my problem is more when I underthink things.

That could also be considered solo or more of a solo type outing of a sort with a backing band even if under a band name. And also what about one man bands as I mentioned in another post? My point was that terms can take on various shades of meaning and be used differently, so I often try not to get too pedantic about such things (and also I am pedantic by nature, so I should try to be more aware of it). I've been genuinely confused when people used songs to mean any music, but I got to understand that people were using it in a much more general sense than I do.

As long as we can come to understand where others are coming from and what they mean, and vice versa, that's what matters most to me for communicative processes. That said, as David said, lingo can be fascinating and tricky. And it can be highly nuanced.

If the OP doesn't care about having artist rather than band names in this topic, then I don't really care either, and I thought that seemed to be the case from a response. Thus I included artist and band names.

^^ As the OP I was using the term " bands" in a general way so if you wanted to put Stevie Wonder or Elvis Costello as the band / artist I'm fine with that. I think I put the collective projects of Clapton on my list so it's all good.

I have a soft spot for Keane too. A really good band, who could have been great. Tom Chaplin is an excellent singer. Their melodies and well placed key changes are the cornerstone of their compositions.

A big +1 for Jellyfish. Massively under-rated and sadly demised too soon.

Nice to see some love for Jellyfish! If you didn't know - The Lickerish Quartet, formed in 2017, consists of keyboardist Roger Manning, guitarist Eric Dover, and bassist Tim Smith, each of whom were former members of the band Jellyfish. I'm ashamed of myself for having not yet checked them out. To date they have released two EP's.
