The first two albums by the great Softies go head-to-head. Which one do you prefer? I am capable of giving different answers to this, as I enjoy both a lot but just today, I will kick the voting off with a vote for 'Volume One'. (Else knows as 'The Soft Machine')

Vol. 1 is a bunch of fun, but vol. 2 is an all time masterpiece.

I like both albums equally, although Land of Cockayne (1981) is my favourite album overall. Thumbs Up

They are pretty similar, so your choice is valid. Tongue

An album that I have spent no time with, maybe this should change. I have avoided it for the sake of their better known albums.

I'm probably the only PA member who thinks Land of Cockayne is Soft Machine's best album, which comes as no surprise. I was the only one who voted for the album in a recent Top 7 poll. Confused

1. Third (103 points)
2. Volume Two (54 points)
3. Bundles (50 points)
4. Softs (42 points)
5. Six (33 points)
6. Seven (31 points)
7. Fourth (26 points)

8. The Soft Machine (22 points)
9. Hidden Details (18 points)
10. Land of Cockayne (12 points)

Land of Cockayne is slicker. But some good moments on there.
For me it's Volume Two.
"We'd do a take and he'd (Producer Tom Wilson) would be on the phone to one of his birds" is a quote from Robert Wyatt about recording the first album. Which I think was released only in America. A great what if would be what if a UK record label got behind them and "We Did It Again" becomes a novelty hit.
But that's not how it happened as we know. Still voting for Volume 2.
Still imagine if Jet Propelled Photographs got released back at time of recording? Game over, man! Game over!

Both as the opportunity is here!

Both are quite fantastic, so both.

While I like Volume One, Volume Two for me, and this duo of albums does indeed make good sense. My favourite Soft Machine album is Third, followed by the second, followed by the first but I like others as well.

I give Volume Two a slight edge.
