This is the continuation of the http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=87800" rel="nofollow - "I really like your review" thread. An idea originally started by Special Collaborator http://www.progarchives.com/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=11239" rel="nofollow - Sagichim , to open a discussion thread where anyone can come express appreciation and share kind words for reviews they find particularly insightful and/or well-written.
The thread will also now serve as a memorial to Brian S. Lindsey, known to most here by his profile name, Slartibartfast. Brian was a Progarchives reviewer who joined the site in 2006. He left the world in late 2020 at the age of 55. It seems only appropriate that a man who was never miserly with his kind words here on the Progarchives forum be the symbolic overseer for this catalog of appreciation.

What an incredibly sad story of Brian's life and passing. With all the nonsense going on in the wider world, we forget that individuals like Brian can suffer such personal tragedies. RIP Brian.

Whenever featuring an album on ProgEars, I'll be sure to read Slarti's reviews when I come across one to see if it's worthy of publication there.

I can't believe it ... 😔
Without having known him besides as a fellow user... it really pains! 😭 😭 😭
I value his transparency at having his picture as profile... he seemed such a good chap! ...and fellow guitarist. Not to mention his sense of humor and positive energy with his t-shirt full of color.
I'd wish we could've done something to help.
Brian, may you Rest in Peace.

Also saddened by the news. Ditto all the positive thoughts and memories of his upbeat interactivity wherever and whenever I encountered his (usually on Ian Beaubot's college radio show).
Nice gesture, Ian, naming this revised thread after "Brian".
This post was meant to be for Psychedelic Paul:
Paul! I just LOVE your creative way of introducing your poll and discussion posts! So clever and witty! You must put a lot of time and energy into formulating them. Kudos to you, bud, for putting in the work. It shows how much you love your music--and how much you love promoting the artists and albums you love. Bravissimo!

I only had a few conversations with Brian, but what I did have with him was completely positive. He never really complained about his predicament either. He was always quite positive about it. What a sad thing to happen to anyone in this cruel world.
A word on The Anders review of "Help!" by The Beatles. That is an amazing review he did there considering that album (like he states) is a difficult one to review. But he did it and did it quite well. Nice job! http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=2496960" rel="nofollow - THE BEATLES Help! music review by The Anders (progarchives.com)

Thanks for the nice words
I know I haven't written so many reviews, but I like to go more in details with the albums, so it is pretty time consuming. That being said, I have actually written quite a few lately. But since there are so many reviews posted a day, they quickly disappear from the front page.

^ Hey thanks dude! I hope you enjoy it, it's been easily one of my most listened to albums this year and i've been playing it on a near daily basis for a couple months now, it just hasn't gotten old. The vocals took me a little while to adjust to, since they're a little different than what I was used to with Death and Opeth, so just a fair warning there

Warning noted. In fact, that’s why I’ve never even considered listening to Atheist before. I’ve never been the greatest fan of harsh vocals, and that’s an understatement. But your review really highlights what I’m missing out on, because of my fear/aversion of the vocals. I think I’m ready to give this band a go. Whether or not I enjoy it, I can’t be sure - but your review has definitely given me the push....

I loved TCat’s Kurushimi review. I’ve been a fan of the band for some time. I can’t remember now, but I think they were the first band I heard from the Art As Catharsis label. So many great bands on that label. I’ve not ever looked to see how many are in PA, but Kurushimi are definitely not the only ones deserving to be included. Hopefully TCat’s review will prompt some to check out the band, and others on the label.

Yes, I was just about to post the same. Warthur’s review is very good.
I did give Stormwatch a spin the other day, having seen the box set was coming out. For me, it is a three star album, and I might review it shortly, but no more than that. To me, ths5 is a discouragement from spending a lot of money, but Warthur waxing lyrical about that live set might well make me change my mind, which is, of course, the highest compliment that one can give a review.

Thanks Nick, I very much appreciate that. I worried that it may come across too much like a rambling rant, which it rather is. It was quite reactionary to various reactions I was seeing (mostly in the forum) . I may have shifted one person at least from the Comus is pure evil camp that rots your soul into the just kind of evil camp. I was less successful with initiating him into the Rosemary's Baby and The Omen appreciation club. Just kidding, well sort of kidding, I try to respect people's boundaries and comfort zones. I avoid The Human Centipede series. I have seen a lot of scorn for To Keep From Crying from First Utterance lovers and Comus hate from those who only know or have heard of First Utterance. Still, neither album would be for everyone. I will keep on trying and keep the crying to a minimum. :)

Thanks guys! What really blows me away about this album is that they're all around 21 years old and they sound as tight and talented as they do.

Wow! A really nice down to earth review on Black midi's Cavalcade from Kempokid, that focuses on the good and not so good in great detail, including the sonics. Excellent!

The 2 reviews of black midi's Cavalcade from siLLy puPPy and dougmcauliffe certainly give this stunning album its due. I can't see a better album, that's had the effect on me that this one has, being released this year. Top marks guys, I wish I could extol the virtues of this album as well as you. |
Thanks! My theory is that there are simply those who love this album and those who haven't fallen in love with it yet. I find it to be one of the most exciting and innovative developments in prog at the moment. Putting the progressive back in prog

I enjoyed the two reviews for Beautiful Bedlam from the Puppy and the Cat - especially the latter, which has convinced me that I need to give this album a listen.
There have been quite a few neat reviews recently, including for some albums I’m not fond of, but which have made me think about them regardless.
[EDIT] Appreciation also for Matti with a review of another fine Jazz-Liisa release. I love the way Svart has been making these lost treasures available to all, and Matti has given a fine write-up for this one.

Great review by Koresea of Triana's somewhat obscure masterpiece: El Patio. When I first heard this record I couldn't believe it wasn't held as an absolute classic of 70s prog. This album mixes Symphonic prog with Andalusian Rock hitting an incredible sweet spot between the two. The production is so crisp and the performances have so much conviction within them. Well done, hope at least one person decided to check the album out as a result of seeing that review!

Nice review of the most recent King Gizzard venture, this time delving into Neo-Psychedelia and Dream Pop primarily. Though I don't dislike this record, I understand the criticisms in this review and they're well communicated. Being the resident King Gizzard fan around here, I have to say that it is one of my lesser favorite King Gizzard records. While the highlights are still there, there's an equal amount of tracks that just don't stand out or stick with me and unfortunately, this records had the shortest shelf life of any KG record. None of it is explicitly bad, but I'd rate it 3.5 stars, I think the other release from this year 'LW' is easily the superior album.

I can't comfirm the age of the drummer, but the other two members (there's apparently another member who's currently on hiatus from the band as well) are both 21. What makes this even crazier is that in 2018 they shared the stage with Damo Suzuki of Can before they even released their debut album. Imagine doing that at 18!

This one is for GrumpyProgFans more negative review on the new black midi, I still just wanna say I appreciate you checking it out, actually was wondering what your thoughts in particular would be on it. Hope you keep it in mind and maybe revisit it in the future, but I get that the vocals notably might be hard to wrap your head around. I kinda look at them like a strange offshoot of Bowie style vocals.
I do wonder though, you mention Djent a couple times and I’ve always associated that with low tuned rhythmic 8 string guitar playing. The parts you mention seem like just dissonant diminished chords, which are often paired with the chugging. Was wondering what the actual definition of Djent is

Thanks to Matti for his review on Tori Amos' live album of 1991 material. I really appreciated his passion and desire to educate others on the existence of this little gem.
Also, I absolutely LOVED Brendan Schroer ("Necrotica")'s review of Björk's Vespertine. It was one of the most raw, poetic, and impressionistic reviews I've read here in a long time--very enjoyable (and appreciated). Love to see/hear the emotional side of "criticism".

Thanks! I wouldn't count that review among my best ones -- Yeah, but there was just something so emotional that came out in your review--like you were really, truly, child-like excited about the music, the album, trying to make more people aware of its existence. and Finnforest's earlier review was very good. Yes is indeed. Having been made to feel as old as dirt with Brandon's references to the unwashed masses hailing Steely Dan's Aja as being both Yacht Rock and Boomer music, in his excellent review, I was soothed by the return of Lazland with excellent reviews of two albums right up my ally, the new ones by Big Big Train and Frost*. You see, there is a cure for aging, even if it's only in the mind.
