Here's a poll I stole directly from 2005! Yes, such a poll was active in that year and got 193 votes in total. The question and the poll options are exactly the same, and I think this is a theme that after 14 years is still not resolved, if I may say so. Let's see if the forum is more active today, pick an option and keep the discussion going.

I would add a few more: - Music strikes a more essential chord within us than average people - We invest much more energy into our musical listening - As failed musicians, we all appreciate those that can do astonishing things with their instruments more than we can - Because we lead such monastic lives (including possessing exceptionally high degrees of ineptitude in interpersonal relationships), we have nothing better to do - Because life imitates art and all prog rockers are arrogant, self-possessed snobs

I believe there is some kind of snobbery in most envionments, but the type of snobbery differs, depending on values, artistic references, and especially the context. For instance, a lot of music critics look down at prog rock.

TBH I don't think prog rock fans are snobbish enough.
Personally: not only do I despise all music that isn't prog, I also despise all prog that isn't RIO / avant, and all RIO / avant that isn't made by dedicated Marxists, and all RIO / avant that's made by the wrong kind of Marxists, and all RIO / avant that's made by the right kind of Marxists, but doesn't feature the bassoon.

I find that often the worst offenders Avant, Zehul and Krautrock fans tbh, I like all those genres, i'm just a fan of music. I love prog, pop, hip hop, folk, classical, jazz, Death Metal etc etc. If you don't like something just don't listen to it and don't go on a rampage trying to tear it down for people who do. I'll never understand people who go out of their way to hate on particular albums, some people just listen to music actively looking for something to dislike. What can you do? I knew a guy who refused to listen to any alternative rock because he didn't want to "associate with alternative rock fans," and refused to listen to anything I recommended him, including Camel, Hatfield, National Health because he said he couldn't enjoy anything unless he discovered it "organically." The irony was that he always raved about how great Egg and Dave Stewart was... the irony, dropped that clown as a friend.
Just accept that lots of people are ok with just being casual music fans and listening to whatever's popular or easy to listen to, nothing wrong with that. We all hear music differently and we all listen to music looking for different stuff out of it. Just appreciate this gift from the heavens and don't be "that guy."

Each human is at a slightly different level of consciousness , we all question the universe from a slightly different perspective based on experience and what we are taught , prog fans seem to open up their mind to an infinite field of possibility and aren't limited at all by other people's opinions, the short answer is they tend to have a higher level of awareness and follow their gut instincts rather than what they are told to understand by the big corporate machine. Prog fans will dig deep even go into who produced the album who mixed it what equipment the artist is using, no other genre of fans does this which is why... we are smarter and often considered 'snobs'. Feel free to disagree with me but I've pondered this question for decades and I believe I`m on to something

People in other genres listen to music and deep dive the same way many prog fans do, especially metal fans, the type of music you listen to has no bearing on how smart you are and many of us listen to tons of music outside the prog sphere, including more simple music like pop and folk. You're being "that guy" right now with this comment.

TBH, metal fans are usually way more intolerable. I've been involved with plenty of bands from a variety of genres, and the most issues were with personalities in metal bands. Prog bands it usually comes down to simple disagreements in which style to emulate LOL.

My counter to that is the kind of people that are prog fans but are ALSO close-minded. Plenty of proggers listen to prog exclusively and crap on other genres, not realizing that they've traded a following of the "corporate machine" for a following of "superior" music. Everyone thinks they are following their instincts. But no one knows when they're subconsciously being influenced, whether it's by an outside force, or by their own pretensions/insecurities. I think the proportion of prog fans or other eclectic genre fans that scoff at commercial music without a second thought is about the same as the proportion of fans of commercial genres and sub-genres who would scoff at prog or generally non-commercial music. I think many tend to both vastly underestimate how many non-prog listeners are still adventurous, and overestimate their own intellect.
A genre you enjoy isn't necessarily indicative of how open- or close-minded you are towards art forms.

Personally I listen to many different types of music, prog included. There is adventurous music within many genres, but also a lot of music that is not. F.e. I don't think highly of all prog either.
But the thing is, some people are so burried in one type of music that they judge everything else based on that kind of music. F.e. I have heard jazzheads crap on rock music because they don't improvise as much. I also remember a Danish article about the revival of folk music, and the comment section was full of derogatory comments about "playing on combs and washboards" and so on. Obviously, those people didn't know that there is a lot of very sophisticated folk music out there. Or else, they didn't want to know because they felt the need to defend their own very narrow taste as superior. And if you don't have the agruments, what's more easy than to be derogatory and sardonic..

Usually I'm the one being called names so it's nice to be on the other end of it for a change. Anyway, it's all in good fun of course.
As Forest Gump might say though snob is as snob does. What I don't like this people thinking that prog is the only serious kind of music or the only kind of music that matters. Or that only one or two kinds of prog are important. Also, I see a lot of snobbery against neo prog and prog metal but not many other subgenres.
