Subject: Nightwish......Tarja, Anette or Floor?

I know a thread about this has already been made, but it was made several years ago and has been closed since then.
Even though i have every Nightwish album from the Tarja era, and i consider Wishmaster and Once, as the bands best albums, i might possibly consider Floor the best vocalist. I know the thing that Nightwish suffered when they had Anette as their vocalist is, she wasnt opera trained in her vocals like Tarja was, so the band had to change direction a fair bit to suit that.
But the problem with Tarja is, opera style vocals is ALL she can do. From having a listen to Endless Forms Most Beautiful, it seems Floor has the most variety of the 3.

I have all of Tarja Turunen's Nightwish albums too, AND all of her solo albums.
I'm also floored by Floor Jansen of Epica and tempted by Sharon den Adel of Within Temptation.

Floor was only a guest vocalist in Epica.
I only like the Nightwish with Tarja, late 90s, early 2000s.
I do think Floor is a good singer, but the bands she's been in don't do much for me, as well as the two albums she did with Nightwish.

I like em all. I consider them as complements to the music so haven't gone to lengths to compare them. Hopefully rogerthat is around as he has some opinions to share I believe

Sorry, my mistake. I meant Simone Simons.

I think the contest is really between Tarja and Floor... Anette is just not in the same league. Indeed Floor has the great advantage of being the more versatile one... perhaps one of the most versatile women singers I can think of. Yet hearing her sing Tarja's originals, I can't help but notice how unique Tarja's voice was, and must just prefer her performances. And then, so far I have not really been much of a fan of the music Nightwish has done with Floor. Strangely enough, my favourite Nightwish album in Imaginaerum, with Anette on vocals (though the live versions they have done with Floor do sound so much better in her vocal delivery, and I only wish they had originally recorded this album with her).

Pretty much, Annette just doesn't belong. Floor is overall comfortably a better singer than Tarja. One of the most versatile SINGERS, across genders. I think it's more that Nightwish utilises only a part of Floor's seemingly endless repertoire and in that she gets compared with Tarja.

^ I saw Floor Jansen with Nightwish last night in the Prog Rock Dock concert series and she was amazing! I was floored to discover she's also the tallest member of Nightwish at over six feet tall!

Talking about Floor's versatility, I would love to hear a full collaboration between Floor Jansen and Devin Townsend, whose music I also love because of his own versatility.

I would too, what a treat that would be! Although, we might have difficulty identifying which of the two is rendering the death-growls!

Nightwish with Tarja was magical.
Imaginaerum with Anette was awesome, perhaps their best album as for songwriting and craftsmanship.
Floor is a very talented singer. One of the best professional figures in metal. She's awesome live too. However, I didn't like her first album with Nightwish (Endless Forms Most Beautiful). I've yet to hear their last album, though.
All in all, I'd go with Tarja. Oceanborn is perfect, Wishmaster is not perfect but has great magical atmosphere and they don't have any crappy album together.

I think she actually had Devin sing a song with her on one of her albums before Nighwish (ReVamp I think was the name of that project), but it was actually rather ordinary. A whole collaboration album would be wonderful, specially if Devin was mostly in charge of writing the music.

Just about the way I would put it myself.

Personally, I not only respect and acknowledge ALL 3 singers, but recognize the 3 different eras of the band. But, lets not forget the 2 different drummers (Jukka & Kai), or the 3 different bass guitarists (Sami, Marko & Jukkis). Plus since Tuomas is still the chief song/lyric composer in the band it goes without saying Nightwish is still thriving in 2024! The comparison is always between the 3 different lead singers, even tho the band has had several slight lineup changes over the years. The way I see it is: Tarja is/was the myth in the studio, Anette was the fairy the bridged Tarja & Floor, and Floor is the f**king live legend! All 3 have made Nightwish the band they are today!

I'm on Tarja side, her voice in Ever Dream & Phantom of the Opera was absolutely amazing.

IMHO - The best albums to me are in Annette’s era, I rate Imaginarium very highly, but in terms of vocals both Tarya and Floor are better vocalists. There we area vote for each one.

^ Imaginaerum is actually my favourite album from Nightwish, but indeed I prefer both Tarja and Floor as singers over Annette. And the Imaginaerum songs played live with Floor are gorgeous.

for me Nightwish was TARJA. Her voice was like a revolution for my ears

I agree more or less, although Nightwish were not the first to create that symphonic metal sound. Therion were definitely an influence when Nightwish started and even the gothic metal scene of the time.

Nightwish ... never could develop a taste for them. Totally boring and uninventive. They're at least bearable with Floor on vocals.

I think Floor is the more competent, better range, but her abilities are somehow misused (for lack of a better word). I thought the last album they did was rather poor.
They will release a new album in a month or so. First single has already been released, quite underwhelming, again, Floor's talents are not properly used (IMO obviously).

^ Doug loves it, but even he pointed out that the vocals are buried in the mix. In general, Nightwish is too "uneventful" for me. Last time I got interested was when they made this evolution themed album endorsed by Richard Dawkins. Big letdown musically.

Nightwish really isn't the kind of the music I'm into right now, but having said that, I always like Tarja's vocals better than the other two. I think it would be cool if Tarja could do a collaboration with Fred Frith and Ikue Mori. That would be awesome. It's not about the singers but the quality of albums and compositions. The two albums with Anette was excellent, the same with Tarja. The album with Floor are not so good...

Strangely, Dark Passion Play (with Anette) is my favourite Nightwish album, but Tarja has always been my favourite Nightwish singer.

Based on the OP, I understand the thread is about the singers.
