2 of the most popular comedy movies of the 90s. Choose your favourite or one of the other options.

In fact, The Big Lebowski is my favourite movie irregardless of the genre(s). But I'll again go with the "both" option as Dumb and Dumber has no match regarding sheer hilariousness. I think its sequel is also quite good, displaying the merits of being a deserving continuation.

Anyway, The Dude abides. Heart

I love The Big Lebowski. Dumb and Dumber is, well, not nearly at the same level, even if I did enjoy it.

"Dumb and Dumber" has exactly the kind of "humour" that I absolutely hate. I don't find it funny at all. Not that I don't like screwball comedies; I love comedies like "Bringing up Baby", "Arsenic and Old Lace" or "Some Like it Hot". But I hate comedies that are based on the idiocies of people. I want my humour to be intelligent.

"The Big Lebowski" is on a completely different level, so my vote goes there.

Dumb and Dumber.

Absolutely adore it..  though definitely not a fan of Jim Carrey..  (but in this one.. 'Lloyd Christmas',  oh come on!)  ...nor this type of movie…  but this one makes me laugh..  and I love what I find to be this 'idiocy', but that deep inside has much to do with 'innocence'..  (IMO)  and that is perfectly portrayed in the movie and the performances.  Like the soundtrack and all..

Big Lebowsky yeah.. good..  'Walter' kills me laughing..  but somehow I find it looses focus on the plot with the nihilist thing.

I think Dumb and Dumber has a kind of "fortune favours the innocent dumb" vibe, and thus I see no real humiliation there. Otherwise I would hate it, I presume. It hurts me when I witness a real humiliation, even sometimes in the movies.

The Big Lebowski, even though it wasn't that funny, although that's probably more to do with American humour not translating so well in England, especially in the case of Seinfeld - "the show about nothing" Smile

^^^ I thought TBL was very good, and very funny. It's a different kind of funny. I take baseline American humour to be more in the Dumb & Dumber vein; stupid people doing stupid things etc... But Seinfeld was really well written IMO, as is Curb your Enthusiasm, which is classic situation comedy.

I like Curb Your Enthusiasm, where Larry David often liked to remind people he was the writer of the Seinfeld show, especially when he was booking a table at a restaurant. Smile

Lebowski made Jeff Bridges.  Dumb and Dumber is a waste of Jeff Daniels. Lebowski easily.

The Dude, easily. The mastery of the Coen brothers is behind it: script, direction, cinematography... are all on a much higher level than Dumb and Dumber

Confused  Bridges was already "made" in the early 70s; think of The Last Picture Show (1971), Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974) and many other great films since that you might have forgotten...

I recall Jeff Bridges starred with brother Beau Bridges in The Fabulous Baker Boys and he was also a distant cousin of Cantilever Bridges. Tongue

I know what you mean, and I haven't actually seen The Jesus Rolls yet and have read that The Big Lebowski is actually not the biggest influence on it, but is instead Going Places from 1974. I doubt that I would like it near as much as The Big Lebowski, which I love. I listened to a podcast in 2019 comparing The Big Lebowski to Pulp Fiction (even if not that comparable, more so than TBL and D&D -- Dumb and Dumber, not Dungeons and Dragons). https://www.verybadwizards.com/167" rel="nofollow - https://www.verybadwizards.com/167

I love plenty of the Coen Bros films (and Tarantino films for the matter, who I was comparing the other day with someone I know).

In regards to Jim Carrey films, I hugely preferred Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Truman Show and Man on the Moon to Dumb and Dumber.

The Big Lebowski. I saw Dumb and Dumber on the big screen and laughed out loud once or twice (I was also slightly surprised that Red Right Hand was included in the soundtrack), but it really doesn't stand up to repeated viewing. I don't remember laughing out loud at The Big Lebowski, but I enjoyed every minute of it and I might watch it again this week as it's been a while since I revisited The Dude.

the humor of movies like "Dumb and Dumber" completely fails to entertain me. I couldn't watch the movie for more than 20 minutes
