Tough choice between The Perfect Element and  Remedy Lane But I'll go with the former as it's been around longer. LOL

I picked Awake of Dream Theater. Though it is hard to leave The Perfect Element Pt. 1, Subsurface, and A Pleasant Shade of Gray behind.

It's hard to decide between Awake, Remedy Lane and A Pleasant Shade Of Gray. But, since I must choose one, I choose Remedy Lane.

Those two Fates Warning albums are arguably better than everything else. I voted for Perfect Symmetry, though I like both equally. Jim Matheos is a far less flashy yet more creative player than John Petrucci.

Threshold's best album is probably Extinct Instinct.

not Fair Warning (that's an actual band), but yeah, Matheos is more inspired than Mr Petrucci, i agree.

I'm not sure, I only know DT and PoS from this bands. Even though my favourite is DT, I believe for an album I might have to choose one of the PoS ones... I would need Train of Thought (or perhaps 6 Degrees) to vote for DT.

Whoops! Fates, of course. That's what happens when you're working on a split-screen and doing five things at once. WinkLOL

Some great ones listed here but I went with Threshold - Hypothetical Tongue DT awake and Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry close.

Threshold - Hypothetical for me, one of my fav bands ever in prog metal, evrything they release is above great, this one in particular stands as their best, maybe together with critical mass.

Followed by the mega underrated When dream and day unite, this is kick ass album

And the last 3 Fates Warning albums also super great, never been a POS fan

I only know Dream Theater well. I like Threshold but couldn't have named any album off the top of my head. I voted for Octavarium because it very proggy and had a decent variety of ideas. Awake is also really good.

I've been playing Dream Theater - When dream and day unite a fair bit lately, it is really really good and deserves a special mention and not to be forgotten about. While I wouldn't call it their best album its one of their most inspired.  Tongue

I only know Nightwish and love em.  Which of these above would I be most likely to enjoy?

I've always seen Nightwish as symphonic power metal, and do enjoy the albums with Tarja, although Once was weaker than the previous ones.

I suggest two albums by Therion if you like Nightwish (although I dare say they probably influenced Nightwish LOL
Theli (1996) and Vovin (1998)

WDaDU is my favorite DT album. It took me many years to realize everything they've done after are bloated versions of their debut. Maybe it sounds harsh, but I don't get the same excitement from their albums with Labrie (though I'd still recommend I&W and Awake to everyone to make a "trilogy").

I voted for WDADU, I bought it when it came out and loved it.  It's not their best album, but it's one of the best.  Sound isn't perfect, but the songs are great and I enjoy it immensely.  Awake I don't find to be one of their best, Octavarium would be close though...

Need to get more Threshold, I only have the more recent stuff.  And Fates Warning I have only heard of....
