DON'T sound like it. A couple example I can think of are 'Magick Brother' and 'Gazeuse!' by Gong. Yes I know the second one is Pierre Moelen's Gong, but still Gong. And then an obvious one is 'Invisible Touch' and 'Trespass' both by Genesis but if you listen to them back to back you'll swear it's not same artist.

Can anyone else think of an example of two albums by the same artist that sound like it must be a completely different artist on the other one?

Utopianisti's beautiful The Third Frontier and Brutopianisti--released less than an year apart!

Bent Knee and the Ben Levin Group contain basically the same band members but have totally different goals and orientations!

Actually, the more I think of it, there are many artists who need multiple formats in order to explore different expressions of themselves (Toby Driver, John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, John Reed, Anthony Arjen Lucassen, Roine Stolt, etc., etc.)

Hero and Heroine and From the Witchwood by Strawbs.
One is a classic prog folk album and the other is a symphonic masterpiece.

From Genesis to Revelation and Calling All Stations by Genesis.

Also, the first two Renaissance albums with Jane Relf sounded totally different to the later albums with Annie Haslam.

One more: The Magnificent Moodies 1965 album didn't sound anything like the Moody Blues albums that followed it.

There was a thread that asked the same question , but of consecutive albums . Of course Pop Genesis is not like Gabriel era Genesis. However what about Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and Trick Of The Tail? Those are very different in sound style and approach. Both are great albums and not 'pop'.
Also ELP were very different when they got to Brain Salad Surgery compared to the debut album. Emerson and Palmer had expanded their instrumentation and Lake's voice had dropped. Another perhaps bigger change was then to Works Volume One . Emerson completely ditched the Moog rig and they used orchestration.

This one is almost too easy:
Bowie (Young Ame v Heroes) , KC (lizard v "anything else") , Fripp so many, and PF early to late.

Some not mentioned would be:
Pain of Salvation's BE v Road Salt One

Opeth’s Morningrise v Damnation or Heritage

And the most extreme I can think of Ulver’s Bergtatt v Messe I.X-VI.X

PFM Jetlag v pretty much anything that preceded it
King Crimson In the Wake of Poseidon v Larks Tongues in Aspic
the Cure Three Imaginary Boys v 17 Seconds (not Prog so kill me)
ELP Works Volume One v pretty much anything that preceded it
the Nice the Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack v Five Bridges
Lou Reed Metal Machine Music v pretty much anything before or since (not Prog so kill me again)
Radiohead Kid A v pretty much anything that preceded it

With regards to bands that have undergone many personnel changes it's hardly surprising that there might be such a marked discrepancy in the nature of their subsequent output e.g. Bolin replacing Blackmore, Moraz replacing Wakeman, Lake being replaced by Burrell in turn being replaced by Wetton, Gabriel being replaced by Collins, Dio replacing Ozzy, Hogarth replacing Fish, Gilmour replacing Barrett (the list goes on)

Although people will inevitably put Love Beach against other ELP albums the one that was completely out there different  in a really bad way was In The Hot Seat . I barely recognised them and wondered who was holding them hostage while some imposters were pretending to be ELP. So depressing I nearly cried (for real)

^ I felt the same. Love Beach does suck in many places but is a work of labyrinthine conceptual genius compared to In the Hot Seat

Love Beach still sounds like ELP. It sounds no less ELP than some of the stuff on the Works volumes.
