I like Psychedelic Rock best of all with Progressive Rock being a close second, although I didn't listen to that much Prog-Rock before I joined ProgArchives.

voted other, but might also have chosen 2. For me some 70’s prog is something special, a huge part of my life, so that tends to point at 3. I like other genres but not as much as prog .. I mean it gives one a nice fuzzy feeling as if you are the prince of all fairness to say other genres are just as great as prog, but in my opinion they are not, strictly my own opinion of course. Besides what defines prog is a very broad thing I think it's that broadness of definision that makes prog such a huge umbrella of many styles , from Journey to King Crimson it's a pretty broad spectrum.

'Prog Rock' - 80% Other -20% I would actually struggle to name 10 artists that in general I like that are not prog. One of my favourite albums is Jagged Little Pill but I'm not sure I particularly like much else by Alanis. Similarly with Suzanne Vega and her debut album. There is maybe only one artist that is not prog that I like everything by and that is Bat For Lashes. Prog bands that I like usually have at least 5 or 6 albums that I want to listen to over and over assuming that they carry on that long! I rarely listen to Classical Music (unless its Keith Emerson's Piano Concerto!) . I don't like Jazz all that much. Pop music has always been very bitty but occasionally you get a fun tune. I don't like Blues at all and Hard Rock is often boring. I never understand the point of music that is fixated on just one thing when you can mix things up and have lots of fun!

Yesterday I listened to Heartland by Runrig, The Granite Years by Oysterband, The Spirit of Autumn Past by Mostly Autumn, Rajaz by Camel and Road Rage by Great Big Sea. So clearly, you can see my loves are prog and folk. (I also listened to Runaway Horses by Belinda Carlisle, but I'd never admit that in public). ------------- A TVR is not a car. I don’t really categorise music much outside of this place - at least not at home where I just listen to music. My collection is full of prog, pop, jazz, rock, folk, electronic, avant, blues, funk, hip hop and all kinds of weird genres. But is there one that reigns supreme? Nope....but I do tend to prefer the help of Stevie Wonder and Funkadelic over King Crimson and PFM when in the company of women  Different tools for different jobs...just like different days and different moods call for different music. ------------- “The Guide says there is an art to flying or rather a knack. I choose option 2. I'm essentially a prog fan but I also like other genres as well, especially the Classical music. If music is good you can count on me. So, I like all genres.

As I mentioned in another thread I remember back in my teens thinking that everything sounded like crap compared to Yes. However, I no longer feel that way. Different artists and different genres are coming at music at different angles and have different things they are trying to accomplish musically. As for the question, I'll have to think about it but it's either the second or third option for me.

I probably used to be option 2, but I've gradually shifted to option 3. I listen to more prog these days, because I find it so much more interesting, enjoyable and fresh (especially modern prog). I still like my classic rock, blues, jazz and classical, but the proportions are no longer as even as it once was. ------------- “Living in their pools, they soon forget about the sea.” |

Looking at the choices, applying a broad definition of prog, and including Prog Related, Proto-Prog, as well as anything I consider to be prog even though it isn't listed in PA, the first option (If it's not prog it's CRAP!) is the closest for me. However, there are albums that I listen to that isn't prog, even by my broad definition, but these are mere exceptions, and do not represent interest in other genres. ------------- No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man. |

When I saw "If it's not prog it's CRAP!", I assumed that "CRAP" would be an acronym such as "Completely Regressive Anti-Progressive". Then there's "C-Rap", which is basically an abbreviated form of "rapped sea shanties" in net-speak. Oh those sea pups and their text-talk, hip-hop, digital media devices and GPS's. Back in my day, when we sailed we would navigate by the stars and kidnap a balladeer to cheer-up us buccaneers on the long journey, and nowadays it seems sailors are more interested in songs about booty than plundering booty. I'd rather twerk a treasure chest. "Other" for me. I don't consider myself to be a Prog fan despite there being a lot of music that is deemed Prog at this site and at others that I do like. There's also an awful lot that I dislike included in the PA database. I listen to a lot of different styles of music. It rather depends on one's definition of Prog, and what those parameters are. A lot of what I like in PA wouldn't be contained within the parameters of certain prog purists -- I'd say most that I like in PA would be considered on the periphery or Prog tangential to a great many. Most of the music I listen to these days isn't included in Prog Archives at all. |

Right on, Bowie and Queen. Now you just need some solo Collins in there. I recommend No Jacket Required. It really is a good album. Face value I don't like as much, a little more filler in that.. No Jacket is pretty tight.

I really contemplated "If it's not prog it's CRAP!". But, I chose "I like other genres but not as much as prog". Throw a "nearly" between "not" and "as" and that's my preference. I don't find State Cows on PA, and that's what I'm enjoying as I type this. The band that I name the successor to Steely Dan, but a bit on the "Yacht Rock" side.

Second answer. I like very much - English and American music of the Sixties (especially proto-prog). Not Italian music because too much melodic. - classic/heartland rock - prog rock, especially eclectic prog, crossover prog, prog folk, Italian prog... Then: symphonic, Canterbury, etc. - Italian singer-songwriters and some American singer songwriters (Dylan, Cohen) - some classical music (Berlioz, Bartok, Vivaldi, Bach, GH Handel, Stravinsky (Sagre du Printemps) , Mahler etc.) I like less (in order) - blues and fusion - hard rock - Opera (Verdi, Wagner, Berlioz, Puccini, Mozart) - electronic -pop - jazz - country/folk -heavy metal -Last: Italian melodic music. ------------- Amos Goldberg (professor of Genocide Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem): Yes, it's genocide. Me too, and my tastes have widened even more in the six months I've been a member of ProgArchives. I'm discovering literally hundreds of classic Briitish prog albums that I never even knew existed before.

3rd option, I guess. But I really do love A LOT of genres outside of proggish ones, they just don't give me the same feeling as when I listen to prog. Really, there's at least 2 songs from every genre I like.
