I noticed in the plethora of polls for various numbered releases from different bands that the 4th and 5th albums seems to be a sweet spot for many prog artists, such as:
Jethro Tull - Aqualung, Thick as a Brick Yes - Fragile, Close to the Edge Genesis - Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound Van der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts, Godbluff Gentle Giant - Octopus, In a Glass House Rush - 2112, A Farewell to Kings
But then it struck me. What about longevity? What happened on releases 10 and 11, for instance? Who kept the streak going even after 10 or so years? And there you have the premise of the poll.

I'm also voting for Tull, though most of the rest are fantastic choices.

Yes, you're absolutely right, although I'd never thought of it that way before. Anyway, my vote goes to the Moody Blues because I love both of those albums.

The Zappa listed is not his 10th/11th release. It was Frank Zappa and the mothers. His other releases were Frank Zappa, but other players made the album. No difference.

Floyd takes this quite easily for me. I am one of those that still love The Wall as much as I used to back when I was a little kid finding out about ‘big music from the solar system’ - as my mind seemed to call it. Animals is another masterpiece, if not even better constructed..at least for my tastes. The general gist of that album sadly still rings true. I’ve always felt that it managed to distill something very complex and bureaucratic into this very simple and naive universe..and it works. Reminds me of a child when faced with poor excuses coming from supposedly adults; they cut through the nonsense, straight to the point. Coupled together with the synth and animal sounds intertwining and you end up with something very effective. I’ve always thought so anyway

The ones I listed are his 10th and 11th as "Frank Zappa", non-live, non-movie soundtrack, without the Mothers.

It can get complicated trying to sort out Frank Zappa's convoluted discography into some sort of chronological order, and that's before you even get to his multitude of posthumous albums.

I'd noticed that with 4th & 5th recordings as well. Perhaps they were able to really hit their strides with defininig who they were, playing together and also getting the hang of recording into an easier routine by then. Also, maybe less pressure to succeed, since they were succeeding quite well, so they could be more relaxed.

I can't ever deny Rush a vote, although both Floyd albums are close competition

It's definitely King Crimson that wins this one for me as I think "Thrak" is a masterpiece which seems to be contrary to most people and "Three of a Perfect Pair" is excellent. Zappa might have won this if "Shiek Yerbouti" was coupled with one of his jazzier albums like Waka/Jawaka, but that would have defeated the purpose kind of. I don't like "Joe's Garage" that much.

Great to see here has been that much love to Animals/the Wall, I have always thought the Wall is not very respected here. Anyway I love those both more than WYWH.

I don't think I'm a fan of this specific poll format: Most of these combinations have both an album I like and one I either don't like or just don't care about. I think I'm gonna go with Genesis.

Difficult to choose between VdGG - Trisector, A Grounding in Numbers and Pink Floyd - Animals, The Wall because it's Animals > A Grounding in Numbers > Trisector > The Wall. However, I'll give my vote to VdGG.

Jethro Tull's pair of albums take some beating. IQ's albums are quality, as are BBTs. Rush might have been moving away from their classic era, but they are still very good. However, can't vote against the old 'Kitchen Prose and Gutter Rhymes'!

By the way, for me it was Jethro Tull followed by Pink Floyd. Each band at albums 10 and 11 released really great stuff.

Rush 10th and 11th studio albums are GUP and Power Windows.
I voted for IQ anyway and that wouldn't have changed if above had been correct.

Based on what I've heard I agree more or less, with Big Big Train as the outstanding exception. The Second Brightest Star is fine and Grimspound is a masterpiece.
